Apologies if this is somewhat of a foolish or old question, but I’ve only just started looking into NWN2 modding and am currently a bit baffled.
As part of a quick project I am attempting to replace the existing heavy crossbow model with a custom rifle model. I have created the rifle, and positioned it so that I believe it will be able to use the animations, etc. for the heavy crossbow without looking too silly.
Unfortunately I now have the problem of getting the obj file to an mdb.
This is proving a bit awkward as there are no tools for the 3d modelling software I normally use, so I have switched to Blender (v 2.55) which I am very unfamiliar with.
I can’t seem to get the python scripts suggested working (this is the Blender 2.5 MDB Import/Export plugin on the nwnvault at ign).
I have tried using the mdb2obj and obj2mdb tools, but this is what happened:
1) I converted the game’s heavy crossbow (w_crsbh01) to an obj as a reference to work from.
2) I imported and positioned the rifle model (no assigned textures) into the file.
3) I deleted the original crossbow model and renamed the rifle model and to what the crossbow model used to be (mesh.002, I seem to remember).
4) I assigned the crossbow texture to the rifle (figuring I can sort out any texturing issues later).
5) I exported back to wavefront obj and named it w_crsbh01.obj so that all the imported names, references, etc. could be used and just the 3d model is replace.
6) I ran the obj2mdb exe and got the message “Error: invalid face list: f 6/6 7/7 3/3 5/5”
I realised that I had done something wrong, but was unable to work out what exactly. I suspect it is something obvious to those more experienced with NWN2 modding or with blender, but sadly it eludes me.
I tried just taking the original mdb file, converting it to obj format, importing to blender then (without altering anything) exporting out to the same filename and converting back. This just came up with an error stating there was no mesh.
I tried importing mdb to obj, then converting back again and this seemed to work OK.
From this I conclude that my problem lies with Blender – that during the .obj import/export process I am messing up some critical variable, but I lack sufficient know-how to work this out.
I would welcome any advice, help or suggestions that people feel would be of help.
Thanks in advance!

The RWS folks know more about this stuff than probably anyone else.

The Blender plugin is wildly out of date -- you'd need to try to find an ancient version of Blender to which it fits, and then use the plugin.
I haven't done that (tried once, abortive for some reason I didn't comprehend), but if you can get it to work you should be set.

which tools are you using usually? personally i would get rid of blender because of the importer/exporter. you could try gmax and tazpn's tools. they work like a charm with a student's license of max11. officially gmax1.2 is supported so there shouldn't go anything wrong

Hi everyone - many thanks for the helpful suggestions and comments.
I have taken the advice of -Semper- and used gmax. Easy install, export and import works perfectly and my model is now in NWN2 and working like a charm! To any other novices like myself I would definitely recommend using Gmax.
Thanks again for all the help!
