Which is more rewarding as far as story/character development? To give an idea of my preferences...

I preferred rivalry with Anders. When I did my Anders friendship playthrough, it was painful for me to be so nice to him, especially when he guilted me into helping him blow up the chantry without my knowledge. I sort of liked him toward the beginning, but he got sooooo whiney! With rivalry, I was able to tell him to shut up when he needed to. I was also able to convince him that he was doing something wrong and he seemed to genuinely regret it, even though he did it anyway -_-

I preferred rivalry with Merrill. It seemed to have more depth than friendship. Particularly the scene where she smashed the Aluvian to pieces.

I preferred friendship with Aveline. I'm not a big fan of Aveline in general, just because I find her a bit boring, but the things that must be done and said in order to gain rivalry (ei, blaming her for Leandra's death, not letting her kill Ser Wesley) made me feel like a REALLY bad person.

I'm not sure about Isabela. With friendship, the conversations were fun. With rivalry, she was a total b*tch, which I wasn't a fan of. However, I liked the overall outcome of rivalry after her personal quest when she realized that there are, in fact, things more important than her getting a ship.

Fenris: I liked both options. I may slightly prefer rivalry. I like to play as a mage and he is my favorite romance option, so the rivalry dialogue makes things a bit more interesting.

I only went friendship with Varric and Bethany, so I have nothing to compare it to. Carver just ended up, sort of neutral, so again, nothing to compare it to.

So, to the one person who may have actually read all of that... suggestions?

Then you'll like Rivalry Sebastian.

Friendship Sebastian is just the cutest thing ever, pretty much an adorable puppy who just wants to be best friends, hang out in the Chantry, and make nice woven bracelets or something. But he's also IMO more vascillating and spoiled.

Rivalry Sebastian is a mother****ing badass. He's much more driven and goal-oriented, and the change in his personality really starts to come through in Act 3 when he becomes more concerned about the mage/templar thing. He gains a ruthless edge, and it's pretty cool watching the Chantry boy grow a spine of steel.

Awesome! While cute, adorable puppy Sebastian has his appeal, I think that I would prefer ruthless, driven, badass Sebastian! Thank you for the input.

While I find both paths ok, a word of warning: I think Sebastian's rivalry path is pretty hard to do. Even for the slightest bit of friendliness to others you get friendship with him, while rivalry can come from things that don't fit together like being a zealot like Petrice or defending mages very much.

you can pick up a huge chunk of rivalry points with Sebastian if you do Anders' quests and act supportive of him (hard to do if you are rivaling Anders as well--unless his rivalry is maxed out). Also you can murderknife Javaris for a really funny scene and rivalry points. I'd check wiki to see what gives the approvals you want to apply.

For me, I prefered puppy like Sebastian, though that may have more to do with the fact that I was trying to rivalmance him and I didn't like how the whole thing turned out. Friendly Sebastian actually seems to like Hawke. Rivalry Sebastian felt like he was using her to get his political goals accomplished. Though again, that was the romance. I never finished that game either.

Gah!! I might have to try both in that case. I don't really mind a challenge either. I'll probably just have to leave him behind for certain quests or something like that. I guess there is no better way to find out than by trying it myself.

By the way, how was the Sebastian romance? I have thought about attempting it, but it seems difficult. I heard that you can't flirt with any other characters EVER in order to get it. Plus, I really like the Fenris romance. If I try with Sebastian, I would want the results to be worthwhile.

You can find most of Seb's friendship/rivalry flags on the DA wiki, as well as both versions of his "romance" on Youtube.  Personally, I prefer the rivalry romance, especially since the dialogue is very much the same whether Seb is romanced or not, aside from a flirt line or two.  There's really only one conversation in Act 3 that differs significantly.  The friendship one has his weird chaste marriage "become a nun with me" proposal.  The rivalry romance has him promise to marry you once you're Viscountess and he's prince.

lol I'm the opposite, I prefer the friendship romance because the rivalry proposal felt 'calculated and cold' more like a political manuever than someone proposing out of love.  To each his own however.

To OP: No, you can't romance both Sebastian and someone else (even flirting with someone else will prevent the Sebastian romance since it triggers a LI in Act 2, well before Sebastian makes his move in Act 3).  In Act 3 you can carry any flirtation you do with Sebastian to its end when he will bring up the other person in an indirect comment, and put an end to any further shenanigans.  However, his is a 'safe' flirt in that you can romance someone else, flirt shamelessly with Chantry boy and then go back to your original lover without consequence.  I am unsure if this was because he's a DLC or what, but neither Sebastian or the LI mention the flirtations and no one is offended by it.

He even has a sweet, wistful line about how he wishes things had been different when he met LadyHawke in the Last Straw conversations, which I believe is the same for romanced or unromanced?

Oh my god! I might actually have to try and romance him now and go Rival! That sounds like it's so much fun! :3 so much better than his nun proposal. Now I HAVE to try that romance! As soon as I finish romancing Isabella and Rivalmancing Anders. :D

I'll probably just end up playing twice, once with friendship and once with rivalry. I think I'll try one romance with him, just to see how it goes, and as Sable mentioned, there is always Youtube. I appreciate the input from everyone!

Are you planning on siding with the templars with your Anders rivalmance?

Yeah.  It's the easiest way to get to the rivalry and I haven't actually sided with them yet.  Not overall anyways.  I also want to get the trophy for when I become the Viscount of Kirkwall.  :3

Yeah, it's definitely a matter of preference.  Personally, I find badass, calculating Sebastian kinda hot

I heard that rivalmancing Anders  is the only way to make him agree to join you if you side with the templars. I tried to spare him during that playthrough, but he refused to join me and ran off. He then came back and tried to stop me, so I had no choice but to fight him. I'm not a big fan of Anders in DA2, but I didn't really want to kill him 0_o

On a side note, I think I'm going to see what puppy Sebastian is like first. Then I'll rival him later. I'm a bit disappointed that you don't get him in act 1.
