I preferred rivalry with Anders. When I did my Anders friendship playthrough, it was painful for me to be so nice to him, especially when he guilted me into helping him blow up the chantry without my knowledge. I sort of liked him toward the beginning, but he got sooooo whiney! With rivalry, I was able to tell him to shut up when he needed to. I was also able to convince him that he was doing something wrong and he seemed to genuinely regret it, even though he did it anyway
I preferred rivalry with Merrill. It seemed to have more depth than friendship. Particularly the scene where she smashed the Aluvian to pieces.
I preferred friendship with Aveline. I'm not a big fan of Aveline in general, just because I find her a bit boring, but the things that must be done and said in order to gain rivalry (ei, blaming her for Leandra's death, not letting her kill Ser Wesley) made me feel like a REALLY bad person.
I'm not sure about Isabela. With friendship, the conversations were fun. With rivalry, she was a total b*tch, which I wasn't a fan of. However, I liked the overall outcome of rivalry after her personal quest when she realized that there are, in fact, things more important than her getting a ship.
Fenris: I liked both options. I may slightly prefer rivalry. I like to play as a mage and he is my favorite romance option, so the rivalry dialogue makes things a bit more interesting.
I only went friendship with Varric and Bethany, so I have nothing to compare it to. Carver just ended up, sort of neutral, so again, nothing to compare it to.
So, to the one person who may have actually read all of that... suggestions?
