Turian. Coolest race ever in both appearance, voice, and background imo.

Hanar should be on that list. Hanar gets my vote.

Asari, but I'd happily play a Turian, Krogan, Batarian, Geth or Salarian as well.

Hanar wouldn't be able to lift any weapon in the game, not even a Predator.

As for OP's question. Asari, turian and salarian (in order). I think humans are meh, but it wouldn't be a game breaker if the protagonist was one. At least the squad should keep a maximum of 2-3 humans, as they tend to not be as interesting as the non-human squadmates, who adds some insight into their species.

Don't forget culture and straight-foward personalities.

Asari rule! But any races that form the council would be fine by me. Bioware could easily pull this off with 2 voice actors, speech mods and a "nickname" or a "title" rather than a "family name".

Krogan. They are a blast in multiplayer and let's face it, they are awesome.

Although what woul be REALLY cool is to be able to choose. They did it in MP, why not SP?

Probably Salarian. I've been...less than satisfied with a lot of the storytelling from the ME series so far and having a Salarian protagonist would pretty much guarantee a rich plot filled with intrigue. Unfortunately, this would never, ever, ever happen. Salarians have no romance options. And romance is (understandably) now mandatory as a protagonist. So Turians are probably the next best option if you want a non-human race.

Asari are, so far at least, space-elves. Pretty, old, and perfect. It would take a lot of work for an Asari protagonist with an Asari upbringing and Asari friends/family/affiliations to be interesting. Much of the Asari appeal lies in their superiority--which is precisely why they're not good protagonist material.

Krogan are awesome. Krogan are popular. Krogan are cool. But a Krogan protagonist would be the worst thing ever.

Playing as a sentient Geth would be really interesting, and you could easily have multiple voices to choose from, since D.C. Douglas' (Legion's voice actor) voice already went through a lot of processing and special effects and stuff.

Runner-ups for me would be Turians and Quarians.

That's a valid point, but I think BioWare has done a great job at showing just how "imperfect" Asari can be, which always makes for a good protagonist--you know, doing the right thing despite all the reasons not to.  The majority of them early on become commandos (for a lot of them, that's read: mercs) or "exotic dancers."  They're susecptible to greed and corruption, as Illium shows, so there's a lot of ways you could have an Asari protagonist fight against such things.

Human.

I mean, it all depends on the story really, but I personally like the whole "from the insignificant and unwelcomed humans" perspective. It provides much deeper immersion for me personally. But as I said, it all depends on the story and which race fits best in the underlying themes.

I really hope they add opposite genders of all the races. We still haven't seen drell, batarian (and vorcha?) females yet. They should also add raloi and virtual aliens to the galactic community, if ME4 turns out to be after the conclusion of the reaper war.

Well if its taking place after ME4. I highly doubt humans are unwelcome anymore.

Either Turian or Asari. Krogan and Geth would be fun too.
