Except that it's fairly obvious women are allowed to fill infantry roles in the Dragon Age
universe without people raising a stink? There's quite a few women at
the Ostagar battle, Sophia Dryden was the commander of the Grey Wardens and had the respect and admiration of her dominantly male peers, and Ferelden's history has a great many warrior women like Andrastae, Moragain'nae(sp?), and the Rebel Queen whose name I've forgotten.

Much of which is ALSO completely out of synch with the dialog you receive when you play as a female warrior.

The game is riding some bizarre half-way point.

People, there ARE female warriors and male mages in the game. Them not joining your party doesn't make the game sexist.

The issue's not that the game is sexist. It certainly isn't. It has characters that are sexist, which is certainly a good thing for a complex story and world, but that's not the issue. Some of us just like the female warrior aesthetic and think Dragon Age should let us have one. I would have preferred a female Qunari to Sten, for instance.

And, to those suggesting we simply make Morrigan and Wynne Arcane Warriors, well, that doesn't help those of us that like those characters just as they are. Besides, Morrigan's exclusive robes are her best gear. Juggernaut armor doesn't really help her Cone of Cold and Winter's Grasp things to death. ;)

My Morrigan is happy in her Juggernaut. You should see her running after things and slashing at them though I keep setting her behavior on ranged in tactics. I was thinking about leaving her a shield only but she has so much fun with a sword I just cant take it away. I keep her for healing, not for looks :P

I thought i was the only one who turned Morri into a 12 ton tank just for fun! I gave her Juggernaut set, that bullwark shield and the Arcane warrior sword.

I was actually surprised with her battle prowess! Even with the little mana an arcane warrior gets (because of buffs) all i needed was mind blast, walking bomb and mana syphon active. :wizard:

I'm always surprised to see people that are so eager to try and apply real world history to a fantasy game to justify their skewed idea that females shouldn't be portraied as fighters (when there ARE several female fighters all over the game). Sorry, but Dragon Age is NOT medieval Europe, might as well start realizing that.

No worries, Jazz. I must, however, disagree vehemently on the subject of Jaheira. She always ended up being the tankiest member of my melee squads when I brought her along due to Iron Skin and full plate mail. Even Korgan with a tower shield can't compete with Jaheira completely shrugging off a claw swipe from a dragon.

Yeah but if she's not charging into battle with a greatsword or battleaxe then she ain't a warrior in my book! ;)  Though I suppose a scimitar does work...

I'm a big fan of huge weapons, myself, but there's something to be said for toting a shield and becoming an unstoppable bullwark. Besides, with the +5 quarterstaff in Throne of Bhaal and Greater Whirlwind, Jaheira can go big-weapon-big-damage with the best of them!

Big is subjective. I think that, seeing as a quarterstaff is usually the same length as a greatsword, and can be thicker than the hilt of a greatsword, then it is big. Go pick a fight with a master of the bo staff and tell me it isn't a big weapon after your skull's been bashed from seven feet away.

I know, I know, I happen to have a certain familiarity with the chinese wu-shu staff, but it being effective sure doesn't change the fact that a stick lacks a lot in charisma compared to a greatsword.

I do have to admit that the running thread of sexism in the game is frustrating to me.  I played a male character the first playthrough and a female the second and was forced for the entirity of the game to hear snippy little comments like "I didn't expect a FEMALE Gray Warden there are no FEMALE Gray Wardens" and one of my female party members marveling over the fact that I was apparentlya  tough, competent female character.

Eventually this did tick me off somewhat.  35 hours in, WHY YES, I DO STILL HAVE BREASTS, THANKYOUFORNOTICINGSHUTUP.

So, in this case the mage/mage/rogue bit does sort of enforce this running thread of persistant sexism in the game which, I mean, I don't know, is something the writers chose to put in there.  They could've created gender equality in Fereldan, or at least some sort of female warrior order, so at least I did not repeatedly have to hear about the marvel of my own breasts.  As the sort of lesbian that varies from season to season between butchy and lipstick, I gotta say I get good and enough of that in real life, thank you.

"Oh look, I'm playing an escapist fantasy game and people still say 'durh...boobs' every two hours.  Lovely!"

Stupidity is inescapable. Never forget that. Now i know that the Grey Warden commander of Orlais was a woman i can just tune out those morons who are surprised to see a woman in the wardens on my female playthroughs.

I'm not going to deny that a greatsword isn't cooler than a quarterstaff. Heavy blades are my favorite melee weapons, easily. Still, Jaheira is no less a warrior for using quarterstaves.

Anyway, to get back on topic, I had forgotten that qunari don't really have female warriors. This makes me sad. Guess the best I could hope for would be a qunari Mage or Rogue.

In lieu of a qunari, though, a tough, charismatic soldier woman like Sophia Dryden would be perfectly acceptable.

Qunari cut out the tongues of their mages and keep them in cages.

Then a runaway qunari mage sounds like a pretty awesome party member to me.

People also use "fantasy" to justify being able to wield a 10ft long and 4ft wide meat cleaver one-handed while wearing a thong bikini that offers better protection than a full suit of gothic plate.

We all make mistakes, I freely admit I made one, but that doesn't mean you have to be a prat about it.

i'm used to people loudly proclaiming an opinion, hoping that if they back it up with enough bull****, others won't question it.  considering your mistake undermined your entire point, it was my duty to point it out.

And they are entirely entitled to. Given that's it's fantasy and not "reality" yanno.

Anyway, there's quite some hope now, there will be FIVE new Companions in the incoming expansion. Now, a nice female orlaisian knight? Thank you :D

You are 100% wrong about AW.

How so 100%?  It takes Strength to wear armor.  That Strength has to come from somewhere, either equipment or level point-investments.  If the focus of leveling up is in Strength, that diverts points that would go into Magic, Willpower, Dexterity, Constitution, et al.    The end result is that what you get is an Arcane Warrior that can wield weapons (not all that great), toss spells of only moderate effectiveness), and wear mid-range armor, BUT unable to do things like Shield Bash.

I find that a focused Mage with Rock Armor and Rock Salve can go toe-to-toe with opponents MUCH more effectively than an Arcane Warrior -- especially when the Mage can also disable opponents with Cone of Cold.  (Found that out using a Mage in the Proving in Orzammar.  Thought I was going to have my arse kicked, but it turned out to be a cakewalk..)

Things like this just give off the impression that you have never played the game. At all. It only takes a quick look into the Arcane Warrior talents to find out that they have a talent that makes MAGIC become their primary stat for meeting strength requirements on armor and weapons. Which I think is an amazing idea.

I wouldn't say so. Maybe he IS playing the game and didn't unlock arcane warrior yet? because I didn'ty unlock it yet and i didn't know. But i'm most definitely playing the game.

You don't need to unlock it in the game to look it up on Google. :D

But seriously, the amount of complaining about this game is staggering. It is a good, terrific game that is actually quite realistic in most cases for the choices it gives you (going a bad route is more profitable but few people like you whereas taking a moral stand on issues garners you respect but not coin, in many cases), with my only gripe being how many characters "forget" your actions for the sake of advancing the plot, which sort of tones down the novelty of actually BEING a chaotic character, so to speak. However, I can see why this is the way it is.

As far as the lack of female warriors and whatnot, all I can say is just get over it. There is a reason that you can create your own character with whatever gender you wish without any penalties. So far I am now playing my third female character, and eventually I plan to play a female warrior, female arcane warrior, etc. etc., there's so much replay value in this game. And if you're STILL not happy with everything, well, then make your own mod! That is why it's there. I am personally fine with the class/gender assignments that your party members got, although I DO think that the party you can create is very restrictive if you don't play as a tank or a healer because of the precious few choices for those two roles. Either way, though, point is, instead of whining about it why not just make some constructive criticism on the forums, hope you get some momentum from other users supporting you can maybe Bioware will act on your suggestion in future content. :D

Why would one have to "get over it?" Remember that constructive criticism is what makes games better. No one here is saying "the game is sucky because we don't have an heabvily armored female warrior". It's more of a suggestion for the future than a "oh my god bioware you sexists!"

And by the way, i don't know about you, but not everyone goes around googling every single aspect of a game before playing.

I don't google every aspect of the game before playing, just when things come up that are relevant to what I'm currently doing.

The OP's comments sound more like complaining than criticism or a suggestion. A suggestion would go along the lines of "I'd like to see more female warrior companions in the future for this game." etc. in a neutral way. Especially with all the other complaining being done on the forum, I think many people are growing tired of it and increasingly annoyed and hostile.
