Ok this is partly a question and partly a call for help.
I have found myself towards the end of the game and I know how to call allies to assist my party.
When I do this I see the selected factions portrait and how many units they have left.
Part of the problem is that keep coming, unless I exit the area. The second part of the problem is that I cannot select other allies to aid my party.
When i try selecting I get nothing except that sound that you hear when you click an incorect action.
Is this the same for everyone else who is using the ps3 version or have I misunderstood something?
Also does anybody know whether this is the same with the 360 and PC versions?
Could be me or it could be a glitch.

you wish to switch armies mid battle is basically what you are saying. have you tried clicking on the army you already have in action, and then coming out of the menu, and then going back in to select a new army? I haven't yet tried this myself. so it may not work. but as far as I know you stay with that one army for that section, so always good to choose carefully which one you use.
for me in Market District I prefer using the Redcliffe forces, then in the Alienage I'll use the Elves that bridge makes a wonderful shooting gallery. then at the palace gates I will use the elves again, since it is such a large area to cover. then at the fortress gates, it is back to the humans.
then for the final battle. I like the dwarven forces(either dwarves or the Golems), and if/when they get wiped out. then the mages circle.

Yes thats what I was trying to say.
I was just abit confused because I was checking around and alot of the hints and tips I could find all quote the same passage.
It basically tells you to choose certain units at certain points during the battle against the big bad it just had me abit confused ebcause the only way i could see that happening is by wiping out that part of the army.... Which seems a tad wasteful to get rid of just over 160 units in such a fashion.
I had tried clicking on the icons again and it appears that I am stuck with those units for the duration of the level.
Thanks for the reply, after my experience with armoured core four I was worried that I had been lumbered with another glitchy product.
