They aren't going with the same approach to narrative they did with DA2. The story won't be told from someones point of view.

Tweets from Mark Darrah

.@JamesWrightNI
-not a steampunk setting
-Still in the Dragon Age so no huge time jumps
-no gryphon riding (sorry)
-not a framed narrative

Additional tweet from Mark

@SusanneSaville
Da2 had Varric as a narrator telling the entire story (like Princess Bride) DA3 doesn't do that

---

What do you think of this? Do you prefer Framed Narrative? Happy or sad?

That's OK. The framed narrative in DA2 was an interesting device and it served its purpose in condensing a 10-year time span, but I wouldn't want to see every game told in that way.

And who cares about griffins? I'd rather see ghasts.

They should keep trying new things for every game and keeping some of the stuff that worked the best from the previous titles. I did like the framed narrative though :D

Good to hear.
While I didn't hate the framed narrative, I always felt it didn't really add anything.

I hate the game-as-flashback concept, myself.

That's a relief! I didn't like it at all that I had to play a story told by some narrative. It took away the great tension feeling you have when you think that maybe your character is just going to die a forgotten and nameless ass... in DA2 you're already named champion and the narrative just spoils all the fun.

I wanted to reenact that scene in Never Ending Story where Sebastien, and Falcor chased those bullies into an ally. <sighs>

At least there won't be framed narrative. I dislike it in a choice driven game due to there being potential for retcons with the excuse that the narrator was channeling their inner Keyser Soze.

Glad on last 3, but no Steampunk?!?! What?! Steampunk is the bestest! How do they expect to sell any copies of the game with decisions like that? Silly Bioware.

Framed narrative worked well when you are passively watching a movie or reading a book. Not so much when playing a game.

I'm happy to hear that they're removing the framed narrative . That was one of the worst features in DA2. It made me feel like my character just sat around for ten years going derp...

I'm okay with no gryphons. They are but glorified feathered fiends, and their evil dejects are much more dangerous than the ones of a normal flying vermin.

There's a difference between doing a feature badly or the feature being bad itself.

I'd like to give +1 Nomination for best post of the ever for all time on the BSN.

I'm imagining Anders riding a griffon and chasing a couple of mean Templars away yelling "Feathers!!!"

Best thing ever. Kind of gothic, Victorian sci-fi, only the technology is based mainly on steam power.

I didn`t mind the framed narrative too much. allthough it did make me feel like I was being told a story, rather than playing one.

Did they force feed the BioWare peeps the 'Princess Bride' reference, or is it just the only framed narrative they know of?

I liked the framed narrative. It brought sort of a realism to the story, only telling the interesting bits of what happened to Hawke as in the end you ended up spending several years in Kirkwall... wouldn't have made any sense if things escalated so quickly in just a ~week, it required the hatred from every side to brew for years.

That sort of narrative worked when the game was set pretty much inside Kirkwall and it's vicinity (excluding the DLCs).

 "no gryphon riding (sorry)"

No gryphon/griffon riding....

Thus far, nothing to say that there will be no griffon wrangling, raising, herding, hatching, keeping, swapping, or training.

(Somewhere, in the outskirts of Kirkwall, a Dalish mage clutching a ball of twine is grinning with the delight of possibilities.)
