Of course, knowing how things turn out in ME3 *does* make it a kick in the pants. That one will haunt my Shepard for most of her demigoddess existence.

And is part of why she couldn't choose destroy. She failed to protect the Batarians properly, this time she had a choice. Either wipe out an entire race that only just gained its real freedom, or pay the price herself and the aggressor race that caused the whole mess.

That is why she chose the awful option of Control.

Otherwise? She would have nuked those damn reapers without hesitation or regret. They crossed too many lines, too powerfully, for too long.

As to whether or not the Geth are 'alive', I simply posit how you can prove a human being is 'alive'. You're just software we don't have the tech to copy and paste yet.

Smashing your computer or erasing the files would allow the computer to *function* yes, but if it had been alive before, you killed the individual it was at the time.

Rather akin to being able to rip someone's brain out, smash it into paste, and successfully put a new one back in.

Sure, all the pistons pump, but you're not the same living thing anymore.

When my computer can engage me in philosophical debate, I'll be looking at it as a fellow rather than a tool.
