I'd love it if Bioware was able to take all 3 endings into account and make wildly different beginnings for ME4 based on the various endings to ME3 but I realize that isn't really their style. I suppose the best I can hope for is that their are a few references to Shepard's choices and they find a believable way to meld all 3 endings into a single beginning for the new game.

I hate to point this out but prequels generally suck.
Star Trek was a money making machine until the prequel series 'Enterprise' was cancelled because of poor ratings. Star Wars... well George Lucas has never been thought of in the same way since the Phantom Menace.
If the biggest rival Sci-Fi franchises fell from a great height, flat on their faces in the mud, trying to do prequels I would avoid one like the plague if I were Bioware. Yes I know that means risking upsetting some fans by 'canonizing' one ending, but I can't see another option.
It has to be a sequel!
Star Trek 11 was amazing.

If you want to make a prequel, make expansion packs for ME3 and use those as prequel stories. I can't promise I'll buy them, but I would most likely be interested enough in "Human-Turian First Contact" or "Asari Breach the Citadel" or "Krogan Rebellion" stories that I would still play them. But a full game or a full trilogy? The years of development would be wasted and a huge opportunity would be lost.
An ME3 sequel story has endless potential to dazzle. You should go in that direction, in my opinion.

Actually, I hope they just do something good that's inspired. Just make it good. Meh. Just make a sequel. : V

Prequel sucks. Prequel = the player being aware of anything noteworthy that already has happened.
Besides even if there wasn't then you'd still be dumbfounded because it's not mentioned in the codex to be taken as canon which is terrible.
It just undermines the value of ME since it either contradicts the history and knowing the Reapers exist but not being able to do anything about it, kind of makes everything in that time meaningless.
Even if you have to use one of the ABC or even D endings you'd still be able to work around it and not let it (No pun intended) have a mass effect on the lore or the player's hard work.
Well there's a lot more reasons for a sequel but I'll keep it short since I've talked too much anyway.

We already know what happened worth of note in the past. So no prequel thank you. Expand the story. Don't try to reinvent small parts of it.

If a prequel is what they decide they want, then preferably a series of standalone games set way before humanity enters the galactic stage. Maybe a game about Aria or Rael'Zorah or the final days of the Rachni Wars or Krogan Rebellions. No Protheans and their failed war against the Reapers, No Cerberus backstory.
