Its generally what happens to me when I play a squad based game.

No first person game has allowed you to change your view by turning your head naturally without changing your direction of movement.

You may want to look above at Maria's image.

As it is generally accepted that the audience will always know they are playing themselves in the game.

John Romero once said...

"There was never a name for the DOOM marine because it's supposed to be YOU."

So I suppose there's some truth to that at least some of said gaming audience does that.

There is simply no benefit to first person view over third person except for the fact that some people like it!

And now you've lost me.

I did. Very few actually bother with (or otherwise may not be able to afford) three monitors and the additional hardware to support them.

The statement she made was referring to whether it's possible, not necessarily if it's the financially optimal choice. It can be done, but the average retail or indie game hasn't really gotten beyond what we have now.

It would be better for it to be an option to choose between FP and TP. If they were to release a Republic Commandos inspired Mass Effect spinoff, that would be ok. I just think Mass Efeect's most dominant game features were player customisation and dialogue choice.

Other than the viewpoint making them ill, I classify most reasons given as being post hoc justifications.

Kind of like most reasons for why FP is better?  :P

Yes.

^ Third person allows for one thing that FPV does not: peripheral vision.

I disagree.

Used to have an aversion to FP as well, but games like Fallout 3, Amnesia and Hard Reset changed my mind. For me it's all about the core game mechanics and what view best supports that, ie; FP can be more immersive but melee, jumping/climbing/platforming is always better in TP. Also, in certain games I just want to see my character, like if CDPR goes FP with Cyberpunk 2077 I'll be most disappointed.

What some people REALLY want is for Mass Effect to be like Halo. If it does not apply to you, simply ignore. But that's a fact.

OK there may be financial incentives for Bioware with this line of thought, but the last time I looked Halo was Halo & Mass Effect was Mass Effect. If you want to play Halo you know where the video game store is, don't expect Mass Effect to loose it's own identity to become a cheap cash in/rip off/copy/pastiche >delete from list to suit yourself<

Like the old saying goes... If it aint broke don't fix it!

Also the third person view gives you an advantage when you're behind a cover, you can see your opponents before they can see you in multiplayer.

That is one of the reasons why multiplayer shooters are usually in first person.

I generally dislike "first-person" perspective games because:-
1) the perspective is limited, lacking peripheral vision, a clear grasp of stance, footing, or a clear awareness of proximity of surroundings
2) I never consider myself to be the protagonist in games (I am a pacifist, sitting on the couch in my living room) -attempts by the developers to make me think I am the protagonist are just an irritation to me,
3) controls - I generally find first person perspective games too fiddly on my consoles...tried Half life on my PS2 and kept falling off a ladder ...it's much easier to climb ladders in real life!

FPS/RPG hybrids annoy me as I love some due to their RPG content (Fallout 3) and hate others because they are just FPSes with minimal RPG(Borderlands) and it's hard to tell from reviews which are which

FPS games are the reason I started playing inverted. I actually get that sucked into that perspective. It does feel like I'm playing through the characters eyes. Third person is nice too, I really won't judge a game based on it's perspective. I love Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead. I play Fallout in first person mode and I feel like third person is the right feel for Mass Effect. Game's like Mirror's Edge relies heavily on the first person perspective but it would be hard to play Bayonetta in that perspective. See what I'm saying? A perspective doesn't dictate a games quality. A perspective is borne from the style that the developers want for a game. It's all about combining immersion with sensibility. Basically First Person =/= Automatically Crummy. Now, if the perspective throws you off a lot I can't really knock that. Everybody has their preferences.
