Hey all, I just recently started playing gold and surprisingly enough have become very confident. It's tough but I have been playing with a Krogan Soldier. Here's my problem: I'm a little nervous to step out of the comfort zone of an obviously strong class/race that can take a lot(the badass grenades are a plus, too)

My question to you is, do you have a lot of variety when choosing your class/race before a game? How do you build a typically shieldless character? Or do you just stick to one or two options?

I have a feeling playing my Krogan might get a little boring. Thanks!

When trying out a new build/character, stick to silver until you're used to the build and can pretty much dominate the enemy. Then you should be ready for gold.

Also, consumables.

I play all characters in the game (well right now grinding 200 waves with certain characters).

But each character plays differently and there is no "perfect" build for any particular character.

If you're not comfortable using a different character yet, try them out first, preferrably a lower difficulty to test out their abilities. When comfy, head back to gold.

Make use of cover, spec fitness, use cyclonic mods, make use of dodge and rolls, utilise weapons with reliable stagger and crowd control powers...
tons of options for you to explore and enjoy my friend.

I use a variety of different classes, but have a few favs I like to stick to:

Geth Infiltrator
Drell Adept
Batarian Soldier
Destroyer
Drellguard (if I'm on a good host and in a good mood)
QMI
QME
Krogan Sentinel
Geth Trooper
Geth Engineer

I can play gold on any class though, just about.

Don't worry, I just used a Javelin for the first time in about 4 months because I got it X and sucked terribly. Who cares if you fail miserably at first, you'll pick it up quick enough.

I usually avoid popular characters like Destroyer and GI because quite frankly they bore me. I'll play with any character as long as it's interesting. I was never one for getting used to a build on Silver before Gold so if you go my route make sure that even if a test build stinks you have something you can fall back on for the remainder of the match so you're still helping the team.

classes I usually stick to:

Drell Vanguard
Volus Engineer
Quarian Female Infiltrator
Turian Soldier
Quarian Female Engineer
Human Engineer
Demolisher Engineer

Shields is not the only way to be survivable. I play the Fury on gold a lot, and her survivability comes from mobility. Always be running, always be teleporting, always be exploding enemies close to you.

I play every class (not kit), but I also got used to gold with my favourite one first (infiltrator) and now am happy to do play it with anything. I'm having the same experience now with Plat as I transition to it with infiltrators and will soon play it with other classes and kits. That's just part of the learning curve of the difficulty.

I've recently started to get in to Gold matches. I've done well enough with Vorcha Soldier and Vorcha Sentinel. Equipped an Acolyte + flamer and Vorcha regeneration works decent enough. I just hate that Geth don't dance around when they are on fire.

All helpful responses, thank you! While doing my banner challenges, I try to stick to silver just in case. I'm sure I'll be able to tackle anything on gold in no time!

I'm good on consumables, mods, and dodging. my current weapon of choice is the Reegar Carbine. If using powers, I do pay attention to what weapons won't hurt my recharge time. :)

There's no general rule to character building. Just decide what you want out of the build and what sort of strategy you'll use before you start putting points into stuff and choose weapons that will fit the playstyle well.

I can't tell you how to stay alive well. I die a LOT.

I play every character on gold. Weak characters have roll or dodge, so that is very helpful in surviving.

I definitely try to be on the move constantly. My boyfriend is excellent in gold matches and I usually end up playing the game with him. One thing I learned is when playing a new character, stick closer to your teammates than normal just in case you're caught off guard or if you're not confident enough yet.

Surprisingly enough, I haven't died that much. I guess that's true though. Build what I want and either plan to be in the middle of it all or keep a safe distance.

Volus adept was fun on gold, IMHO.

One suggestion I feel like giving. Play gold with a squishy character. Prepare yourself to suck and die a lot at first, but you'll learn a lot as well.
Do not spec fitness, nor use cyclonic, just learn to rely on (soft) cover, dodges and your awareness to survive. That will make a better overall player, and you'll be able to play better even when playing tanky characters.

When playing with friends, I use more characters, like Fury, AA, Demolisher, Ghost, QFE, Valkyrie, even Drellguard. When playing in pugs, I am afraid, so I almost always take Justicar, which is the safest way for me as I am most useful with her. Or Asari Vanguard.

I agree! I will probably try that too!

Just a tip : try to not stick to your teammates too much. Especially with a squishy character.

When the KroSol takes a rocket to the face, it'll barely tickle him. But if you're next to him with a squishy character, it'll take out your shields and the DoT will hurt you.

Stay near your teammates if you're not confident in your skills, but always put a distance of security between your teammates and yourself. At least 5 or 6 meters.

In my experience it's usually a good thing to go nuts first. So you quickly learn stuff you should not be doing :D

Furthermore, don't underestimate speed and agility. The AI has trouble getting a lock on your character if you stay on the move constantly. It isn't that hard to go rambo with the so-called squishier characters who usually have powers to crowd control which can be really good for survivability.

Don't be afraid to die (a lot). You learn more from making mistakes than using the familiar (more cautious) approach.

Definitely agree on the experimenting with different playstyles. You never know, you could have the natural talent to shoot like Jay, but you have to try playing for headshots to find out ;)

All good advice here, when I play squishy characters, I don't pay as much attention to fitness, I tend to rely on shield and health gates alot more. Usually, when I'm playing my Fury or Slayer, my health never gets past one bar. Because things do so much more damage on Gold+, cyclonic 3 or 4 is usually the best way to survive.

Have to be fast though, with squishy characters, an otherwise harmless mistake on a tanky guy, could get you killed.

I actually got bored of playing various classes/weapons and now sticking with Javelin GI, which is more unpredictable.

But here's what I can tell you every class/weapon works on gold and every class work on platinum given good weapons.

Generally learn how tech combo works (bio combo not as powerful nowadays), use weapon a bit more often on power class, or basically learn to shoot a weapon, don't just rely on powers; learn to use soft cover it's almost like cheating in this game that you can keep killing stuff without being shot back. Be aware of your surroundings don't hesitate to escape. Learn spawns, grenade is always effective to use when you know the spawns. That's all I can think of now.
