I definitely try to be on the move constantly. My boyfriend is excellent in gold matches and I usually end up playing the game with him. One thing I learned is when playing a new character, stick closer to your teammates than normal just in case you're caught off guard or if you're not confident enough yet.

Just a tip : try to not stick to your teammates too much. Especially with a squishy character.

This.  The only time I'm within 5 meters of teammates is if I've been Banshee warped and I know I'm about to die.

If you'd like a completely different experience that can be extremely rewarding (as in fuzzy feelings,) try a human engineer.

They're easy to learn and once you mastered the kit, your teammates will love you on Gold.

Adapt to the class you are playing. I rarely play the same class twice in a row and i rarely get outscored. Forget score for now i usually am playing really well and am a huge asset to the team.

When i play my shadow i focus on phantoms and dragoons while my teammates take atlases, on my black widow SI i focus on bosses and mooks together but don't really bother with phantoms

Also keep a slice of home with u. If u are playing on a class you are not sure about, take a gun you kno i are good with or is effective on its own (of course make sure it has synergy with the class). Like take an acolyte bc when in down, it will rape everything but a heavily armored unit

When the KroSol takes a rocket to the face, it'll barely tickle him. But if you're next to him with a squishy character, it'll take out your shields and the DoT will hurt you.

Stay near your teammates if you're not confident in your skills, but always put a distance of security between your teammates and yourself. At least 5 or 6 meters.

And that's exactly the reason why I hate PUGs sticking to my ass everytime.

when in PUG I stick with characters that I know best, when with friend I try new stuff..

I try a char in silver for while and if I feel it I will bring it in gold...

I tend to try to be self sufficient if I'm with a PUG. I lean for a bit more help if it's friends, but like you said, experienced players are there for a reason. Not to baby you or worse, have to die with you. I avoid pissing people off lol.

I'm not particularly great at Gold, so I stick to a few specific kits when I venture out into it. A lot of the kits in the game are fun and enjoyable, but at my current skill level Gold requires me to narrow my focus from fun to success, so I just stick to my best classes.

Sounds just like me :) silver is no sweat for me now when it comes to difficulty. Now, it's a matter for branching out and trying all the things!

Usually I have alot of variety but I'm mostly playing with a group of people I met a while ago and they're all good players. If I'm doing PUG matches and I'm not convinced that people in the lobby can hold their own I have a couple characters I'm pretty good with (Asari Valkyrie for example) so if I'm the last one standing I still can finish off waves.

Another issue I have which inspired me to tough out gold, was the fact that I was offline for months. No joke, I had zero new characters. so the extra credits with gold were kind of a motivator. I would have more to work with but I just got burned out for a bit and took a long break.

I think the most important thing when trying different characters is that you can't tank with every character. Play a bit more conservatively at first and then find the right style for that character.

I'm sorry, I wasn't referring to you saying you stick to your teammates obviously. :) That's completely ok, especially if you're trying to learn a bit.

What annoyes me are those sticking less than 50cm from you.

That's what usually happens:

I'm playing a squishy character, cause I almost always do. Chances are, I do not have more than 1500 shields and health combined. Usually around 1000.
Let's suppose I'm in Dagger, against reapers. I'm fighting a Banshee on the right ramp. Sticking to 4-5 meters as a distance, because if I make her scream I will lose health for the DoT, while instead I can dodge warps without too many problems. And here it goes, she warps me and I dodge behind the wall so the ball doesn't hit me... Except that there is the usual, nice, smart PUG 50 cm from me, so the warp hits him and, given it's AoE, hits me as well... So I lose 2, maybe even 3 bars of health.

So yeah as someone already mentioned, just leave some metres between you and your teammates and you'll do just fine. This also helps avoiding mass wiping for very bad placement by the entire team, like when everyone goes around a corner and dies to a turret. If you're 50cm from him, you'll die as well. If you're 5 mts behind, you'll have the opportunity to revive him from cover. ^_^

I've got enough classes under my belt so that I can pick a good class that complements the other players in the lobby. I'd work towards having a good tech, solider, and biotic proficiency so that you can do this. PUGs having been going much better once I started to do this. Mixed class powers can work, but its more fun/effective to have better power synergy.

Oh, I took no offense, but some players out there just aren't understanding enough to deal with somebody adjusting to  new things. That's more what I meant. I'm never stuck to 'em like glue though:) I do what I have to do have a succesful game! As far as the scenario you gave me, I totally understand what you mean.  I have certainly had it happen to me before lol

i progressed through from bronze to platinum, im not going to lie that i had a hard time adjusting to gold and platinum.
i use to use the FoTM builds and still had a hard time, but now i use just about anything i want.

knowing what weekness a character has and making up for it with equipment and gear made the biggest difference for me, also figuring out "how will i deal with phantoms and/banshee's" is what i ask myself when im about to play a character.

sure every gun or character can kill those 2 enemies, but if it takes too long to finish 1 of those then it can really make the game harder, because in my opinion they are the most deadly enemies. dragoon is the next most deadly in my opinion, which they are not bad 1 on 1 its when there is more than 1 when most people get killed.

i say those 3 enemies, but we all know the Prime Stun lock is the most dangerous thing in the game for most characters, but they are more manage able and only require a strategy that involves taking cover and/or breaking line of sight when the Prime is firing on us and throwing everything at them in between.

so in my opinion if it takes "you" playing an "easy" character to win then do so, then after you are confortable try out new things.
also learn those characters you want to try out on lower difficulties, because if you think about it "you" most likely tried to learn everything about that "easy character" before you tried the harder difficulties.

i personally dont mind having a "newbie to Gold/Plat" if that players is trying their butt off, however its the people that act like they dont care or not teamplayers that will get the kick from me.

The only thing you will need to get used to are the different enemies that spawn compared to Silver and the extra damage they will deal and take. True, your playstyle should change drastically from Silver to Gold, but the enemy patterns remain the same. Learn the patterns and try to flank. Many times, when an enemy is fixated on a teammate, they will not break that focus even while you shoot them unless you get very close.
Even then, they sometimes will not turn around.

You'd be surprised how aggressive you can be on higher difficulties with very little risk (unless you are totally alone, either soloing or clutching). If you feel more comfortable with certain characters, then by all means use them. However, if you are with a solid team and can use squishier characters, then I'd recommend using them. Learning how to handle situations with squishy characters will drastically improve your gameplay with all characters (not necessarily more conservative play, but smarter play).

Be aware of enemies, be aware of environment, be aware of teammates. Have an exit plan for confrontations. Abuse right hand advantage / soft cover. Check your rear every now and again. Learn to prioritize targets (it doesn't matter if that Atlass is at 2 bars of armor. He is less of a threat than that encroaching Dragoon or Phantom). Gear up to the point you are comfortable (probably best equipment in the beginning). Learn the spawn points, which will give you a feeling of when and where they will be flipped to, also giving you a sense of when you are in a bad spot and need to move.

In the end, don't feel any pressure because, after all, it's just a game. It's supposed to be fun and relaxing (unless you are playing Geth).

Just jump in and enjoy Gold :)

Hey, I just noticed OP was a girl. I wonder, if "she" was a "he," how many "lrn2play" and "stick to bronze, scrub" posts would there be? I'd say half. ;)

When I posted this, I honestly assumed I'd have to weed through junk to get good answers. I'm a girl, I love video games, and I want to get better at them. Glad this post has resulted in proving me wrong about the gaming community :)

Pics or it didn't happen.  Pics of you playing ME3 MP, I mean.

Please do me a favor.  If you ever have daughters, please pass on the torch.  Nothing cooler than girl gamers.  I've got two daughters I'm going to train to be 1337.

Anyway, glad everyone was helpful.  Have fun!

Not if I'm wielding a Claymore and it's close enough

... Ok sorry, I just started to find out how awesome the claymore is on some character I had never though of using it.

i actually never pay attention to what gender someone is, the tone of the thread was someone legitimatly asking for help to learn something.

so i posted what i felt would help this person.

most threads that get flamed are people that come on here with extreme views and sound whiny at the same time, which is far from i got from the original poster, also most likely why others decided to help as well.

:innocent:
