Hey, I just noticed OP was a girl. I wonder, if "she" was a "he," how many "lrn2play" and "stick to bronze, scrub" posts would there be? I'd say half. ;)

i actually never pay attention to what gender someone is, the tone of the thread was someone legitimatly asking for help to learn something.

so i posted what i felt would help this person.

most threads that get flamed are people that come on here with extreme views and sound whiny at the same time, which is far from i got from the original poster, also most likely why others decided to help as well.

:innocent:

And I appreciate yours and everyones advice. I ended up trying out a male quarian infiltrator with no fitness, and everything other power filled in. Not gonna lie, I died a lot more but learned to keep my distance and just snipe with my valiant while highlighting the big enemies for my team. arc grenades were also a plus. Anyway, bought a spectre pack, and got a geth engineer Image IPB I will be trying it later today!

Hey ashleylynn1992 check out this group they set up chat rooms based on what level you want to play and all of the people I've played with using it have been competent
http://social.bioware.com/group/7929/
Playing with good people helps when you are trying out new stuff because they can give you advice and you know you can count on them to pick up the slack if what you are trying out isn't working for you.
You should eventually try out all of the classes at least once.
The variety is one of the things that makes this game fun, at least for me.

That is the difference between asking for advice like an adult, and whining about it :D

If you have low shields, use cover a little bit more because it gives you damage resistance. Rolling gives DR too. Using non-automatic weapons usually works because you're not exposed long enough to take very much damage.

On most characters with low shields it's best to move fast. When avoiding enemy fire, strafe perpendicular to their line of sight. It's best to have a playstyle where you frequently stagger the enemy.

On the fury for example, I'm rarely ever hit, and I can run up to a huge group of enemies and not take a single hit because they're all staggered by continuous BE's.

I play all the characters on gold and most on platinum. If you like the krogan soldier, you'll love the batarian. He still has a lot of shields, but he has ballistic blades that do insane damage and stagger. He has them purty fire grenades too. Ignore blade armor on him.

Just don't be afraid to experiment.

As some of the posters here said, try the class out on Silver. Best way to know if you are ready for Gold with a certain character is just put a gear with low level consumables & see how you do against Collectors. Collectors are poor man's Gold / Platinum ....

If you can carry your team, not die all the time, get a decent score ...You are ready for Gold...

If you play squishy characters , Stronghold Package , Shield Power Cells, Cyclonic Modulator are your friend...& even though this game has lots of nice powers..The best way to roll with any character is with a good gun....So master the gun + character combination as well...

If you want a easier time... focus on mastering the get-go weapons / flexible weapons ( Wraith, Talon, Harrier, Hurricane , Acolyte)...you can use these on ANY characters very nicely so it will make your stepping into a new character easier....

& learn them spawn points...& the wave limit for gold..Like there are only certain number of Dragoons in a certain waves..

When I started playing gold, I used the strongest classes in terms of survivability, which meant krogans & batarian for me. But then I saw several gold solo and these fabulous guys were using soft cover. I learnt to use it. I think it's key to survive with different kits on gold. Now I can use pretty much any class (with various degrees of success) as long as I don't forget what class I'm playing.

So one thing: soft cover.

I second the advice about soft cover, and also about watching videos. There's some fantastic stuff out there by people which will really teach you a lot about the game mechanics and skills, and synergies between them. I don't recommend watching the speedrun videos or the like, but rather the solo videos and gold guides.

I personally prefer classes that can refill shields (SI with ED, TGI with stimpack) over pure tanky classes myself thanks to how easily a lot of enemies will take you down to shield gate. That's one of the biggest differences between silver and gold for mine.

Yup, solid advice. Soft cover and right-hand advantace are probably the most important things you need to know in this game.

I use one different class and character each match now on gold or on plat, in my opinion, all classes are viable, if you find out how to use them

It is most certainly a tougher go if your playing with randoms so you have to be able to rely on yourself, but usually there are one or two people that will know what they're doing. It really helps if by random chance there are synergies with powers and consumables in the group though. So many characters.. a lot of different play styles and you will certainly come to have your favourites. Just don't be intimidated by gold.

Hey all, I just recently started playing gold and surprisingly enough have become very confident. It's tough but I have been playing with a Krogan Soldier. Here's my problem: I'm a little nervous to step out of the comfort zone of an obviously strong class/race that can take a lot(the badass grenades are a plus, too)

My question to you is, do you have a lot of variety when choosing your class/race before a game? How do you build a typically shieldless character? Or do you just stick to one or two options?

I have a feeling playing my Krogan might get a little boring. Thanks!

As long as you can get in the habit of using cover, mostly soft cover, then you can step out of your comfort zone easily. I am assuming when you use the krogan solider, you are in the open most of the time since you can tank. Personally I find tanky classes to be bad for me since they make me be more reckless and such. I would advice when you are stepping out of your comfort zone, to slap on shield boosting stuff, and try to learn how to manuver enemeis so you have the right hand advantage.

I typically try to go around the map counter clockwise since then I am "naturally" under cover, since enemies woudl almost always likely be on my left.

TL:DR, stepping out of your comfort zone simply requires you to try and use soft cover more, or letting the enemies hit you the least amount as possible.

As a few others have said, it's much easier trying a new difficulty/character with people you play with regularly. If you don't have anyone on your FL to play gold with, send me a friend request (PSNid: Frevett) and I'll invite you next time I do gold.

Alright so I won't get intimidated, and damn it, I'm going to step out of my comfort zone :) I learned a lot of taking cover when I played last night. I tried a few typically "squishy" characters, fell on my face a few times, and by the middle of the match had a good flow going. I have been trying fitness vs no fitness, certain guns while still using powers, and utilising equipment and picking characters that would compliment AND benefit from the others in the lobby. heck, my buddy and I supported two very obvious new guys yesterday. I am definitely feeling much better about my own playing styles and will always refer to this thread to remind myself of all this good advice :)

Here are some tough kits I'd suggest you try:

Any Vorcha with regen-specced Bloodlust
Any Krogan
Geth Engineer with shield-healing turret, no Hunter Mode
Geth Trooper, no Hunter Mode
Either of the new Turians
Destroyer, no missile launcher and Devastator Mode specced for additional shields

Good luck!

Good to know that you're feeling a better player! Being able to play squishy characters and not die much also gives me a good sense of accomplishment :)

My level of lag is such that getting shot a lot is an inevitability, because by the time I see any shots starting to come my way, they've actually already hit me.

As such, I mostly play characters that have high shields/DR, some method of shield restoration, or Tactical Cloak. And I always try to get Rank 5 or 6 of Fitness.

I use a krogan already and I love him! Sadly, as far as your other suggestions go, I only have the geth engineer so far. However, I already had him spec'd out just like you suggested and I will be trying him out today :)

one thing that I noticed was using speed to your advantage ups your survivability quite a bit on the higher difficulty levels (if you are careful with your positioning).

I've been testing the PUG waters, and can do almost as well with a fury moving constantly as I can with my go-to kits (typhoon-destroyer / ballistic blade-bat-soldier). the drell adept would be another kit you could do that with, of course ...,
