I never played the game as the character Sheppard, but as myself incarnated in it. Shepard was just my last name on this game, i cant understand why many people play the protagonist as if were some one else.

And that's exactly why ME4 will survive if the main character is someone different. The player creates his protagonist; the only thing that should change in ME4 is allowing us to give him a last name.

Shepard can live in Destroy, yo.

my point exactly, that scene may have been the last breath before his death ... one stone  fell into the pit .. or he is so deformed that can not be lifted.
BW said he is alive ... you have to have faith friend ..just star buying BW DLC and maybe they ill get more buget for the next game:blink:

So, if "THAT Shepard" is on high demand, who knows, if ME4 is 10/15 years in the future, you can be Lt. Commander Peter Smith and the one giving orders can be Admiral Shepard of the 5th fleet after Hacket retirement.

Anyways it doesnt matter how is, always will be me, I (the player) who make the choices. i surely would miss Mark Meer voice (we'll Bang ok?), but the show must continue, and i am sure that there will be far greater adventures ahead, now that Reaper technology is at everyone's hand.

Sheppard wasn't so much a character as an avatar for me to explore the story and characters. So basically you just want to hold onto the generic name of Sheppard.

Last name would be most probably predefined again from one simple reason - every person in ME is voiced, so there must be some common way how to title your character.

It's a good point, but there are ways around it.

"Commander" (or whatever rank; heck, yet us choose that too)
"Sir" or "Ma'am"
"My friend"
love interest: "my love" or any sort of colloquial pet name

Having a last name didn't hurt this trilogy, but I think forcing characters to take a predefined last name hurts the customization that a lot of fans want.

A compromise: have a last name that can be changed at the player's discretion if desired. You want to stick with "Smith" or whatever, the game will address you as "Smith". But if you change it, the characters call you by your rank or "my friend".

I'd really like to be able to name my guy; it really helps with replayability.

Ready to move forward and excited to experience MEU with a new character. But I still hurt over Shepard's real fate. And those she cares about.

I like to RP myself....and so that means not playing me, plus I am a female playing a male Shepard.....Gave him his own personality, morals, direction, past, appearence, etc... (I do the same for Skyrim).

..........................................................................................................................................................................................................

As for the death of Shep....I choose destroy, so doesn't happen....The thing is Shep spanned three games, a bond is formed, many of us came to care deeply about our Sheps....yes, I am more than well aware he is not real and it is a game, but none the less spending so much time in the company of my lovingly created Shep for all his qualities good and bad, he took on a life of his own for me....my feeling more so as if I was sitting back watching the world and how he chose to intract with it, rather than my guiding him.....just went with what feels like Shep and what he would do.

I do not want Shep in ME4 unless he is the protaganist again and even that thought I am a little iffy about....my head canon has already been set as to what Shep does with himself next....Pulls a bit of a Grissom, though not the bitter soul for it....part time trainer for the Alliance....isolated woody cabin home just outside Vancouver, or what's left of it and dealing with trauma and nightmares is otherwise content.

I do not want any of the ME cast in ME4 actually....would rather it set at least a few hundred years in the future and a completely new story.

I liked Shepard, but now I just got bored of him/her.

I would like to start anew and create my own character from the ground.

I didn't play the Mass Effect series for the action. Other shooters do it better. I didn't play it for the story. It borrows from multiple other fictions anyway. I played it for the choices I was allowed to make and how it affected my gameplay experience. But now my Shepard is dead and so are the descisions I've made. We all know that destroying the Reapers, controling them, or causing synthesis won't make it into ME4 because it would just be 3 different games and EAware is too lazy for that. They didn't even bother to wrap up my unique choices in an appropriate ending.

Don't stop fighting the good fight. Personally if ME4 doesn't involve Shepard and Shepard gets no more closure for ME3 (dlc).. Then I'm taking all my Mass Effect crap outside and burning it, while filming it.

Then I'll upload it to youtube and link it to this very forum to show how Mass Effect ended for me.

If you think Shepard is the be-all, end-all of the MEU, then you are/were doing it wrong.

There are a lot of reasons to not be excited for the next ME games, but this one tops the list as one of the worst.

You're signature invalidates everything you say. So I'm cool.

Nice try though.

Shepard is nothing but a robot designed to allow the player to see the world of mass effect. Read the codex entry;s or simply talk to other npc's you see and pretty quickly it becomes apparent that shepard is only 1 story of many that exist in this universe.

Personally, to me shepard is simply a means to seeing the universe. Bioware is giving a new means of seeing their universe in the next game and I plan to use that new means to learn all I can about what has changed in the universe I love the most out of all other sci-fi stories.

....kind of like saying

"Why should I play ME3 when Shepard is dead?"

if Shepard dies in the ME2 Suicide Mission...

Shep isn't that important. He is just a soldier who saved the galaxy. Don't get me wrong, he is a cool character who I have enjoyed playing as, but it is not the like entire Mass Effect universe revolves around Shep. Salarians and Krogan and Geth and Turians will all still be awesome even without Shep.

I personally am excited to get to play in the ME world through the eyes of a new character.

Shepard dying in ME2 is non-canon.

Shepard dying in ME3 is canon.

Shepard did die at the beginning of ME2 and Bioware used magic to bring him back to life or he is just a robot now so there is nothing to be surprised with in ME3.

Could someone lay out an argument as to why shepard is suddenly this all important be all and end all person in the mass effect world?

I understand people may like shepard, but his is only one story in a universe filled with them. It's not like the world poofed out of existence when shepard's story ended and the history eraser button was pressed. The world of the mass effect universe has always been what was most interesting, not shepard, who is a simple generic cardboard cutout of your typical space hero. Shepard is in the military of the future, and ends up coming across alien tech that leads to him fighting against a powerful alien enemy that threatens our life in the galaxy. Shepard than fights an uphill battle agianst the politicians who just don't get it assembles a team to help him beat the big bad and save the day. It is literally the standard of sci-fi games that involve the military or any sort of action in them, but the world of mass effect is what made it special, not the character of shepard.

Tell you what, you give me a specific and direct quote from a Bioware staff member that confirms Shepard is in fact dead, or indeed that one of the ME3 endings is to be accepted as canon, and I'll happily accept your speculation.

And by all means, you enjoy your shepards funeral. Mine will be having a blast in the multiverse, having all the endings interpretations occur as canon for each of their own what if stories.

How I love multiverse rping, so much less stress about choosing.

They are welcome to go for synthesis if they like but they would not get my money.
I would say thank you for the trilogy and move on.
