Not sure why this is happening. I'm using the steam version btw which doesn't seem that stable to be honest; i used to have the disc version installed on my pc before (a friend's copy) but when i recently reinstalled windows i decided to get my own copy. any idea what to do?

Compare your PC with this, and see if there is anywhere it is marginal:

Windows XP Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows XP with SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1 GB or more
Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (either this is wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB or greater (or this one is wrong)
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space

(Note: IMO, the two cards above should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 Vanilla)

PhysX is being blocked from downloading. Lower/Remove the restriction for the "Download" program (not the PhysX itself) and it should auto-install next time you try to load the game. If you still have the problem, Steam has a manual DL version in: C:\\Program Files\\Steam\\SteamApps\\common\\dragon age origins\\redist

The currently installed version of the drivers is newer than what you are trying to install, aborting the installation

you were saying?

No, I am not. All I am saying is that when you get that error on steam, it means that one of the "auto-downloads" has failed when steam tried to do it for you due to your anti-virus blocking it. If you didn't have any auto-download fail, then I am sorry for wasting your time.

When exactly do you get this error?

about 10-15minutes into the game, just happens randomly. i'll be doing any little thing in the game, and it will suddenly crash to desktop with that error message

Personally I'd mess around with some dx options via Run>dxdiag

- Turn off Sound Acceleration
- Mess with some of the Video Options (Direct Draw etc.)

You can also check if DA:O produces .mdmp files in C:\\Program Files\\Steam\\SteamApps\\common\\dragon age origins\\ like Counter Strike or other Steam games.. Not sure if it's a Valve thing or a Steam thing though. I've only ever had Valve games through Steam. If it does produce a .mdmp file use Debugging Tools from Windows. type !analyze -v to get a full report. It won't give you specifics because it's not a windows mdmp file but it will give you info on what .dll or .exe is crashing it.

Hope that helps! Keep me updated

that didnt work at all, because it says supported videocard not detected and it just quits before the game starts.

I'd try uninstalling, and using your friends disc again. See if you get the same problems.

Do you see .mdmp files anywhere?

Gotta be a heat issue then... Do you have any way of monitoring the temperature of your CPU and GPU?

not really...could it really be a heat issue though? my computer is just as quiet as always when i'm running games, unless i go a few weeks without cleaning out the dust from the fans. i have 1 fan on either side of the tower, and one main one inside either on or by the videocard...so far this is the only game crashing.

going to try something new here; i'm thinking if i pull the drivers off of my videocard and try to play it'll work.

trying to downgrade the drivers didn't help; i checked the fanspeed and whatnot on my pc and everything looked fine. even so, i bumped the fans that apparently werent working too hard up to the 60% territory. going to try once more.

well that seems to have done the trick, it WAS a heat issue. i suggest everyone who knows their pc is capable of running DAO but still has the game crash to desktop should download a program like speedfan, and get all of their fans to work a little harder. its going to make the computer noisier but atleast the game will run =] thanks to everyone who hung in there and tried to help me out, i greatly appreciate all of your advice/suggestions, especially II Sl4sh3r II for giving me the idea to check the temperature on my videocard
