It seems that your issue may have been 'fixed' when you cleaned out the case to reduce heat. You probably do have a heat issue. If you haven't tried it, open the side panel and point a small room fan at the card and see if you can play. If you can play, with the increased ventilation, then you may need to consider better airflow methods.

i didn't clean out the card though, i just used a program to speed up the fans i have...although now that you meantion it i suppose i should clean it now. will try again in a few minutes

I used to play Battlefield 2 a while back on an older comp of mine. Was a decent computer but had a similar issue with crashing. Not everyone 15 minutes however. I actually ended up doing what MrBigA suggested. I put a small square room fan next to the case.. It ended up doing the trick. Heat is the enemy of all enemies my friend.
