I hope its a sequel. I hate prequels. You already know what will happen. It's one of the reasons I can't get into Kotor. I already know what is going to happen to the galaxy as a whole. The only "prequel" I do like is what JJ Abrams did with Star Trek. By changing time you have no idea what the new future will bring. Plus it doesn't break any of the Star Trek lore, as time travel was done many times before.
Knights of the Old Republic is 5,000 years before the two trilogies. Ones events have absolutely no bearing on the other. And neithers events are even acknowledged in the other.
