I only play Gold, and I hate having to slog through Silver matches until I get my character high enough that I can survive on Gold and not drag a team down. No, I'm not one of those d-bags that will try to sneak a Level 3 character into a Gold match and let everyone carry him - that's just wrong.

I will promote a class when I have 3 or more characters that I want to respec. Or on Tuesday/Wednesday when the new character is released, since everything but my URs are maxed, and I'm guaranteed to get the new character cards in SPs. Level 14/16 is good enough for Gold. Other than that, I don't see any point in promoting.

Just curious as to what people who don't promote think of people who do. It seems like the popular opinion is people who promote are basement dwellers forever obsessing over their e-peen who never shower and drink their own urine to survive. Or something like that.

Don't be afraid to be honest.

Why waste thought on how other people play the game?  I couldn't care less as long as they are a decent player while playing with me.

While I don't doubt that they exist, I haven't met any people who don't promote but look down on those who do.. only the opposite here on the BSN boards and more rarely in game. People who don't promote simply have a problem with the promotion system in that they don't feel like the reward justifies the cost whereas people who promote constantly commonly have a problem with those with low N7 rankings and take it solely indicative of skill. This isn't a universal view but I've personally only found the opposite of the thread title to be of any note.

I don't personally enjoy playing at low character levels so only promote when there is a tangible benefit other than n7 increase for me. N7 weekend that requires promotion? Sure, I'll click x. New DLC coming out and I've got millions of credits saved up to get me back up to level 17/18 right away without playing? Sure, everyone gets promoted. New character release on Tuesday/Wednesday? Sure, I'll promote and max out the class with saved credits to get him back up to a respectable gold level. Doing that, I've gotten my N7 to over 1,000 and I'm fine with that middle ground that I've adopted.

Erm. I don't really think about them? Live and let live? To each their own?

I have promoted in past, but that was for EMS. Not anymore in near future. Prmoting doesn't necessarily make you good. You can always use respec cards to try different builds.

I think nothing of them. The main reason I don't promote may have been fixed; having to think of unique names for characters and re-configuring their appearance after promotions. Biggest reason I don't now is I am pursuing a couple of mp challenges that are easier to chase down with level 20 characters.

To be honest, I am sure rabid promoters think less of non-promoters; I am sure I have been kicked from games because my N7 score didn't meet some arbirtary level.

I know I'm on the wrong side of the demographic fence to answer the OP's question-- I promote fairly often. Once I get a class to level 20, if I can't yet afford a spectre or premium spectre pack or two, I'll keep using it to get the credits I need for them and then promote just before I buy, so that if I get XP cards for that class they aren't wasted.

As for reasons why-- yeah, I do like increasing my N7# because it's a signifier to myself of the time I've invested. I can look at it and say "surely I must have learned something in there, so I have no excuse if I fail to carry my weight." I'd *hope* that lower-ranked players who see that on my panel in a lobby will hold me to some commensurate standard of performance, and if I slack off that they'll actually say "step it up, you're embarrassing yourself." It doesn't follow from that that I expect less of N7 120s, just that I expect something of myself.

I also actually kinda like the challenge of re-starting the classes I've promoted and playing them at a low level again because with fewer tricks up my sleeve it requires me to continue 'training' in the fundamentals-- with two power points to spend, I *have* to hone my marksmanship because I can't just spam power combos.

I also promote for the single-player war assets-- which I never seem to hear anyone mention on these threads. After all the characters I've promoted to campaign assets, my EMS at the very start of any new SP game is now high enough that I *should* be able-- were it possible-- to immediately turn the Normandy around and kick the Reapers off Earth with just my roster of MP veteran characters. But I'm always happy to jack that score up another 75 points, to maximize my campaign choice flexibility-- 10,000+ EMS from promoted MP characters means I can deliberately screw up stuff as an exercise in role-playing just to see what the specific outcome is without jeopardizing my endgame options.

And finally, I do want that N7 banner, because I like the look of it. That's my main reason for pursuing any of them, because their artwork pleases me.

Fair enough. If you want to say that a person who only plays GI with Harrier is most likely better at playing the GI with Harrier than someone who switches it up, it's a good example.

Yes, that is what I am saying. People on this forum need to actually read what is posted and try to understand the meaning of it instead of just jumping to false conclusions and taking things so personal :D

Yep, this!

And I liked your analogy regarding becoming a star in some major sports league.

Nonetheless I know of several great players promoting on a regular basis, but there isn't any contradiction with what you are saying anyways. Any player including great players will indeed always be more effective with a Level 20 character than with anything lower than that.

My view on this topic is that the game is supposed to make fun. I am getting bored after playing the same character more than 4 or 5 times in a row. I got reminded of this after trying to grind extractions (or Waves) for the challenges with the same character over and over again. At some point I just didn't care anymore and switched characters despite needing only few more extractions to get that challenge done. For me one of the advantages of ME3 is the wide variety of combinations possible by the mix of classes, using different speccing options and weapons and their respective mods. Always limiting myself to only 1 out of the thousands of possible combinations would feel like driving a Ferrari only in circles on a small race track. Yes, it's a lot of fun, but after some hours it gets boring. So while this probably makes me leave potential on the table, I still prefer it for the fun.

But I know you are awesome with most classes anyways, so you are just trying to make a point here and not really living what you are argueing anyways.

Whatever floats your boat, drives your starship, pops your heatsink, etc. If there was more a reason to do it outside of increasing a number (and war assets I suppose) I'd probably do it too.

Exactly.  I don't see any profit in promoting, and I don't like having to level a character up again to get it gold viable

N7 rank doesn't mean anything. I am ranking up for the challenge system of course, but after that i'm done. I've beat people with some ridiculously high n7 scores, and i've been beaten by people with alot lower n7 scores. I feel the end game is imminent, so i'd rather go out just playing my favorite level 20 characters.

I'm not quite sure how it all works, but every time I got disconnected while playing SP all my MP assets went byebye until I signed in again.

I haven't thought of it that way. I guess its just a natural way of playing MP for me. Promote a character, gain levels, have fun.

Protip: If you want to promote but don't want to play with lvl <10 characters, save about 75k to 125k credits and spam recruit packs after promotion. Your classes will usually be between lvl 6 to 12 when you're done and you'll even get a few consumables while you're at it.

Makes getting back to lvl20 much faster. Personally, i didn't promote much at all except for the weekend event or to respec a few times before Retaliation came out. Now I'm going for the N7 mastery and challenge points.

N7 score in itself means nothing except a reflection of time/effort invested. To each their own.

I choose to promote.

Remember when they added banners?  Who's to say that they won't add something later in ME3 or the series that your N7 rating affects?  Maybe then you'll wish you would have promoted.  One thing is for sure: there's no harm in promoting.

Also, the high-N7 folks probably die often because they aren't Level 20.

This, nice explanation.

I used to never promote, but then we had the weekend event to do so. Now we have the challenges. I did use promotion to reset, as reset cards are pretty hard to come by. I really don't consider N7 rating anything more than a sign of enthusiasm. I like enthusiasm, but don't really care what N7 is...I'll gladly play a gold or platinum with someone with N7 20 if they are fun to work with and a good sport.

only promoted for : Weekend Challenges , and when I get tired of waiting for a respec card. other than that N7 rating is just a cheap disguise for not being able to respec our characters at will. which I might add we should have the right to do already with the number of chars out now, its just getting ridiculous.

I'm not against people who do until they put the team's extraction at risk.

I don't respec often. Largely just for events. I'm not even respeccing for the banner. I've thought about it, but I'm happy keeping every class lvl 20.
