I don't want a sequel or a prequel... but I certainly don't want anything after harbinger's beam so I guess you can put me down in the 'prequel' camp.
Still why people still get so hung up on even the idea of 'prequels' direct or indirect ever since George Lucas completely destroyed humanity's faith in the entire concept I will never get and still it lingers on. Seriously people, you have to move past this... not every prequel is a disaster.
.
Hopefully in a few weeks the Hobbit will change people's minds on this.
You do realize that a movie is a bit different from an RPG? Especially one when you're supposed to have some influence on the course of events.
And who says in a ME prequel we can't have influence on the course of events? Sure, it can't be a threat of the scale of the Reapers invasion, but there are plenty of ways in which the protagonist in ME4 could have a major influence on an interesting story - HIS story - without contradicting the established canon. Helping a colony, finding and rescuing someone, defeating a criminal organization...
Unless people want only universe-shaping decisions, and they want them to have a major influence on everything....
...in which case they really shouldn't want a sequel either , as it would inevitably sweep their final ME3 ending under the narrative rug of "well, it all turns out the same no matter what!"
Personally, I think they should let the ME universe go and focus on a new project. But if I had to choose at gunpoint between a sequel contradicting everything the ME3 endings said and making them even more nonsensical, and a prequel with a more personal story (like what DA2 tried, only done well
... I'd actually choose the prequel.
In short, my impression is that people tend to say "I'd prefer the sequel!" because, in theory, it IS more appealing to see the story going forward... except they don't really consider what a ME3 sequel would imply - either choosing a canon or making every decision a colossal joke - whether you destroyed a whole race and AIs, tampered with everyone's DNA or became an all-poweful AI yourself, it's all the same!
Hey, if ME3's endings changed only who among your squad members died, if Shep sacrificed himself or not, and minor things like these - things which could easily be ignored or even integrated into a following game with a new protagonist - I'd have chosen a sequel too. But that's not the case.
