I don't want a sequel or a prequel... but I certainly don't want anything after harbinger's beam so I guess you can put me down in the 'prequel' camp.

Still why people still get so hung up on even the idea of 'prequels' direct or indirect ever since George Lucas completely destroyed humanity's faith in the entire concept I will never get and still it lingers on. Seriously people, you have to move past this... not every prequel is a disaster.
.

Hopefully in a few weeks the Hobbit will change people's minds on this.

You do realize that a movie is a bit different from an RPG? Especially one when you're supposed to have some influence on the course of events.

And who says in a ME prequel we can't have influence on the course of events? Sure, it can't be a threat of the scale of the Reapers invasion, but there are plenty of ways in which the protagonist in ME4 could have a major influence on an interesting story - HIS story -  without contradicting the established canon. Helping a colony, finding and rescuing someone, defeating a criminal organization...

Unless people want only universe-shaping decisions, and they want them to have a major influence on everything....

...in which case they really shouldn't want a sequel either , as it would inevitably sweep their final ME3 ending under the narrative rug of "well, it all turns out the same no matter what!"

Personally, I think they should let the ME universe go and focus on a new project. But if I had to choose at gunpoint between a sequel contradicting everything the ME3 endings said and making them even more nonsensical,  and a prequel with a more personal story (like what DA2 tried, only done well Image IPB), maybe with several possible races and backgrounds, with the PC trying to save himself and his friends...

... I'd actually choose the prequel.

In short, my impression is that people tend to say "I'd prefer the sequel!" because, in theory, it IS more appealing to see the story going forward... except they don't really consider what a ME3 sequel would imply - either choosing a canon or making every decision a colossal joke - whether you destroyed a whole race and AIs, tampered with everyone's DNA or became an all-poweful AI yourself, it's all the same!

Hey, if ME3's endings changed only who among your squad members died, if Shep sacrificed himself or not, and minor things like these - things which could easily be ignored or even integrated into a following game with a new protagonist -  I'd have chosen a sequel too. But that's not the case.

I've seen this in another thread before, although it could have been you, blaming the disinterest on prequels on George Lucas.

It is really, really hard for a developer to add attachment to characters who you know won't be around, and it is hard to feel suspense for characters you do know will be around. The only prequels that really work well are prequels that are so far in time from the primary time setting that **** could go really wrong or right and all you know is that at most, things in general survived, which you sort of know is going to happen in most stories anyways.

Personally though, all that aside, I don't see the universe expanding going backward in time. We aren't going to learn anything about the Raloi, or the virtual aliens, or other new creatures by going back to some time period in the past.

I requoted pieces of a large post I made a while back to save me the effort of basically rewording the same sentiment I still feel that I lot of us obviously share.

To me anywhere between the 20+ years from when humans arrived to now is basically the present day without any of the Reaper garbage. I like the universe as it is. Control, Synthesis or Destroy be damned.

Raloi and virtual aliens still exist during the present along with the tons of citadel and non-citadel races we havent met yet... to me it's the best solution as it has no down sides.

Edit: Just benefits, e.g. if Wrex, Garrus or Ashley or even the Illusive Man, etc died in your universe they can even make appearances in future games within reason without creating any lore issues. Perfect.

You've got 2 years and some change between the return of the Geth and the start of the Reaper War. Even if you're going further back than that, what can actually happen that has any significance that won't be completely overshadowed by the main trilogy?

We're not talking about an iOS spin-off here or a DVD side-story, a "Mass Effect 4" needs to be able to compete with the significance of Shepard's story.

Why does every story have to be about bald space marines saving the galaxy?

How about more personal, relatable and realistic stories about actual people instead of space-jesus in which you can actually impact... instead of grand universe-shaping illusions of change that have no actual consequences because of [the exact same] continuity issues?

You really can't think of how you want to say that do you? I've refreshed the page several times and seen your post change a couple.

Exactly. A game set in the ME universe, with a protagonist whose race is customizable, focusing more on a personal conflict than on fighting a war against space Cthulhus... well, I don't know about you guys, but personally it would have a lot of appeal to me, even if nowhere in the story I get to become the memetic galaxy-saving hero everyone talks about.

I'm always mindful about context, spelling and construction of sentences when I type because like Ashley I'm terrible with words and I can't stand badly written posts whether it be me or whom-ever so I try to edit myself for other people's benefit occasionally, e.g. limiting reposting if I have somthing else to add.

Edit: On topic I would think even most Spectres would live pretty ordinary lives in reality... even Jedis have to settle trade disputes... i.e. it's not all rogue spectres and genocidal space-ships but i'm sure the average spectre or Krogan mercenary has some interesting stories to tell which don't  threaten the galaxy. I'd personally like to see a Thane game.

How about both? First part of the game is a prequel with events from the past (ie. Rachni war, First Contact war, Morning War, Skyllian Blitz). You get to play different races like Quarian (before they had to wear suits), Turian, Human, Krogan. The next part of the game would be a sequel to ME3.

That wouldn't really solve the problem inherent with making a sequel, though. Which ending matters? Do we get glowing green eyes, friendly Reapers, no Geth?

Let me just say this, I sort of feel you, since there are plenty of stories to be told, but if we're getting an actual Mass Effect 4, I'd rather it be an actual Mass Effect 4. Side stories can be told, but I don't see why they'd need to be told in AAA console form. People whine about SP losing focus in the franchise, I'd see going off on a tangent and focusing on side stories would be the biggest loss of focus in the entire franchise.

Make mass effect 4 a sequel. In My opinion, it would be pointless to make ME4 a prequel. The series doesn't have to end after ME3. Sure the reaper threat is gone, But that doesn't mean that all the races of the ME universe are going to hold hands and sing cumbaya forever, and no problem ever arises again.... And the reapers don't make Mass Effect, Mass Effect. It's the rich worlds, the races and the cultures. The dialog choices, the great story.

And since Shepard won't be in ME 4, it will probaly have a somewhat new focus. It doesn't have to be reapers, all the odds and Doom and gloom. That worked in Shepard's story, ME, ME 2 and ME 3. But just because the trilogy ends the way it does, doesn't mean there can't be new stories after those events. I would be great to be able to see the legacy, the inplact on the galaxy, after Shepard's choices. Even if ME 4 takes place 100 years after ME3. You could have references of previous events and the characters. Hell maybe Liara makes a cameo, since the Asari reach 1000. And she tells the new group about the battlefield, Shepard and the rebuilding after the reaper war.

And also, the galaxy is a Big place, many of the mass relays may be unexplored, many new planets.
Im no writer, but my point is that they could make new stories after ME3, a new situation, and it would feel good. And not like a stretch. The past of mass effect is so well documented, in the games logbook, novels and books. It feels like you know what you need to know about the history of the ME universe. I think people want to know what happens next in the timeline.
Trough different eyes. Prequels are alomst never good, and it wouldn't feel the same.
But i guess well see. But i strongly hope That mass effect 4 is a sequel.

Sequel and its easy to do here's a good base story right here. You have relationships in game Shepard has kid through either partner giving birth to it or adoption or any other number of ways there could be cameos made by many characters from previous series entries. New antagonist wouldn't be hard to do either new faction threatens peace and freedom give it a little thought and there's so much possibility it's awesome there's so much you could do for a sequel. But anyways things I'd like in multiplayer customizable character powers and weapons and tons of freedom for characters actual uniform helmets armor and weapon skins the ability to paint your weapon like customizing cars in forza kinda

Negative.  Besides, J.R.R Tolkien wrote the Hobbit *first*.  Hollywood, as always these days, just did it backwards.

You progress by moving forward!  Say no to prequels!!

Parallel story/prequel. Starting point; first contact war.

I would like a sequel but if we take into account ME3 endings... I see synthesis like a headache.

Sequel with 3 player co-op(3 instead of 4 to keep that same feel as the A.I. squad-mates in this trilogy.), when playing co-op it follows the host's plotline, and if you choose not to import ME3 or can't, like say you're playing it on the PS4 or the 720, you get a list to pick the big stuff like Wrex, the Council, the Collector Base, the Quarians and the Geth, the Genophage, etc. I have a few other ideas going around in my head about the next ME, I just haven't found a thread on here where that's the premise yet

I had to chose none, not because I don't want another game but because everyone seems to think the only possibilities for future games must be either a sequel or prequel.

Use your heads! You shouldn't limit the possibilities to A or B when there're is a much wider variety of options.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again here: ME4 needs to be a sequel otherwise I personally won't care. THE FOLLOWING HAS SOME SPOILERS! DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS! IF I COULD HIDE THEM WITH A SPOILER TAG I WOULD!

The game should take place 30 years after the end of ME3. The galaxy is still rebuilding after the Reaper war. You play as a new N7 recruit of any race. You can now play as any of the council races, including Quarians who are now apart of the council (provided Shepard sided with the Quarians or brought peace). You can play as a male or female version of a Turian, Human, and Quarian, a male only version (for lore's sake) of a Salarian, and obviously a female Asari. Each race/sex combination would have they're own voice actor and unique situations and dialogue for each. They'd also have special powers specific to that race and bonuses to certain classes. So an Asari might be more suited for an Adept, while a male Turian might be more suited for a soldier while a female Turian might be more suited for a vanguard. You could play any race/sex/class combo you want, it's just you could get some bonuses for certain race/sex/class combos.

The choices made at the end of ME3 would have a visible impact on the galaxy, but would not be the main focus. Since it takes place 30 years later, the galaxy has come to terms with whatever the outcome was, and as such have mostly moved on. Except there would be some side quests dealing with the choice. Say you chose Synthesis; You might have to stop/help a group of scientists reverse the synthesis. Or maybe you chose Destroy; You might have to stop/help a company try and scavenge a Reaper ship still floating in space. Or maybe you chose Control; You might have to help/stop a group trying to seize control from Shepard.

The best part about it being 30 years later, is we could get to see what happened to the some of the crew who are still alive. We might get to see an older Joker who's retired and living out his days with him and EDI. Or maybe we get to see Garrus as an old general.

Now, when it comes to the gameplay, it should largely remain the same.
