A prequel means that nothing you do will matter.

A sequel will mean that the only real real difference Shepard made to the galaxy was to kill his robot buddies, or to give everyone an ugly shiny texture to their skin and glowing eyes.

Mass Effect was about choice. It's the very thing they made a point of in their first trailer.

As it stands, nothing matters because of ME3's ending.

Until they repair the story, add logical cause and effect, choice and consequences that matter. Mass Effect is dead. Whatever the next game will be might resemble previous games superficially but will either not matter at all, or even worse, defile what remains of the series.

It doesn't matter what they do. They have written themselves into a dead end. They are doomed. The only way I can think of making this work is if they go the route of making ME4 a dedicated multiplayer game or SWTOR it.

Anyhow, I thought that ME3 was supposed to be the end of the Mass Effect universe not just 'Shepard's story". The original endings had insinuated that everything was destroyed and you rebuilt from scratch. I guess they're sending Mass Effect horse to the glue factory to pull whatever last scraps of money from the franchise's corpse.
