Most darkspawn don't speak, thus they don't need their own name for themselves. Not to mention that he was talking to a non-darkspawn, thus giving him a reason to use that term in order to be understood.

That is a reason. If I were him, I would have said something like 'you're not one of us...', but well, i can't really blame a darkspawn for being stupid, can I?
