During the Battle of Denerim, Sandal slaughtered at least a dozen darkspawn in Fort Drakon and all he could say about that was enchantment. But the thing is -as everyone is aware of that fact- enchantments don't work that way. Later, Sandal did the same thing at Deep Roads and during the final battle in Kirkwall. In the Deep Roads he said "Not enchantment", so what is Sandal? Is he the first dwarven mage? It is also implied that he has dreams. Will we finally get an answer for that in DA:I ?

I don't think so, the appeal of Sandal is the mystery. You're to always wonder, never to know. I still remember seeing him in the Battle of Denerim, pretty sure it gave me goosebumps.

He also talks about a scary old lady visiting him. flemeth, obviously. Maybe he is the creator, himself. its what he does, really. Creates stuff magically. i might be completely off, though.

I also believe he's the first dwarven mage. I hope we'll get some information about that in DA:I

I am leaning toward Morrigan being Mommy, myself.

I hope we get a decent amount of closure on this part of the game and not some hasty 10 second effort to put his story to rest.

I hope so too. That little guy's my favourite. Perhaps we can have him as a companion with a unique Enchantment! talent tree.

I do admit to getting a bit of a Fizban vibe from him...

As others have said, I've always thought Sandal is the first dwarven mage. I really hope all the loose ends throughout the series are summed up in DA:3! :D

Some things are better left "unexplained",It is part of his appeal. Also as long as his "story" doesn't impact the game, aside from being a store front, I'm not even sure that it has to be explained. There are much more important things, lorewise, then Sandel

^Agreed. The continued mystery that is Sandal is not an egregious oversight that will plague my thoughts. Sandal is a fun little tidbit for speculation (gah, the cursed word!) and serves his point - to be an often helpful amusement. If they try to explain him they hazard ruining him.

My personal guess: He doesn't have any backstory and the devs enjoy laughing at all the fan speculation.

He's the autistic child that created the Dragon Age Universe in his mind.

I'd roll with "first dwarven mage".

And this thread should've been called "We Need To Talk About Sandal". There's something strange wiht that dwarf.

He could provide the perfect destraction. While the enemy decides just what the hell is wrong with him, you'll have the perfect opportunity to go in for the kill.

Plus he could probably do that whole "Not Enchantment!" thing too. That could help.

In DA2 I was lucky enough to get to hear Sanda's line 'one day all of the magic will come back and all will be as they were' or something to that effect. In the deep roods in the Legacy expedition (or was it in DA:O Awakening?) he did something that -ehm- very bad ogre. And he said not enchantment.

At first, I thought he might have done this deliberately, but now, I'm not so sure. I gues he tried to defend himself with a stone of sort, and he seemed as surprised as the rest of us when it dawned on him (and on us) what powers were within him. Just as a little boy trying to restle the world, not knowking how strong he really is - or what powers he do have.

I'm not sure Sandal even is a dwarf? Bodhan just said he found him in the deep roads walking about all alone. His mind seems gone somehow, and yes he seems autistic. The operative word here autistic - his memory seems to be blocked somehow. Just like a person's memory will be if this person had suffered a traumatic shock or had been through a traumatic ordeal.

And yes, he talks about a scary old lady visiting him - but who is to say that it is Flemeth? Are there maybe not other scary old ladies out there....? Leliana - maybe? Leliana's backstory is very interesting too, her past seems somewhat shrouded in mystery as well. Just because Flemeth is able to appear as scary old lady, it doesn't mean that it is she who haunts Sandal's dream...

Have you thought of this? Maybe the name Sandal(wood?) is a clue itself?
