Keep it a mystery. Not everything needs to be explained.

Maybe Sandal is a sentient nation that was hit by the same asteroid that hit Thedas and introduced Lyrium to it. Since Sandal was hit with the ugly rock, he was compressed into dwarven shape and became a figure in Thedas much like those wandering around Hetalia: World Series.
Thedalia.
Thedalia.

Sandal :"Could I have some salamanders, please?"
Bodhan: "Don't do it! That's where the 'BOOM' comes from I think."
I'm interested to see Sandal's mystery revealed, but I'm also scared it will be bollocksed.

Some things are better left "unexplained",It is part of his appeal. Also as long as his "story" doesn't impact the game, aside from being a store front, I'm not even sure that it has to be explained. There are much more important things, lorewise, then Sandel
I agree.
I think it is better to leave it a mystery. So many works of fiction stumble when they start producing an explantion for things best left unexplained.
An example of the above is the Star Wars universe, where force ability was explained as symbiotic relationship with microorganisms in the blood stream. The force was much more interesting when it was a mystery that didn't have a pseudo-scientific explanation.

Even if the mystery behind Sandal is revealed in DAIII, he will still appear in later DA games - if there are any future installments. BW has stated that it wouldn't be Dragon Age without him. But who's to say that means we won't find out in the third game?

I love Sandal... how he says "boom" when referring to the rune he created in DA2. I certainly wonder what the scary old lady is about (Hawke's mother's ghost?) In any case, I believe he cannot do direct magic but is such a powerful enchanter that he can enchant objects to perform the magic that a mage does with their body. If Bodahn found him in the deep roads, how did he get there I wonder?

my best guess? sandal could have been an outcast sent to the deeproads as a kid (maybe abandoned by a castless woman) and found a piece of flemmeth like the amulet or something, if he was young enough he might have swallowed it like how toddlers might do. this could explain the scary lady he sees (most likely flemmeth) and his prophecy in DA2 (maybe a part flemmeth's true plan).
