You're enjoying the game for the storyline, you could always drop the difficulty for the brood mother fight and raise it again (or not, if you prefer) afterwards. On easy you don't need to worry about tactics and your party will rarely get severely hurt, let alone wiped, so you could still enjoy the storyline.

Itr is on easy and they do die quickly still.

There's a few strategies here:

dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Broodmother
That page also mentions an exploit :
Exploit: Arcane Bolt (Wynne, possibly others) can shoot through the rocks and wear down the Broodmother. Takes time and mana, but very safe.

I have not tried this but if the fight is pissing you off then it might be worth giving it a go so you can get further ahead in the story line.

This exploit works. I stumbled upon this while trying to hide from her after I ran out of potions with only my PC still alive and her almost dead. The only problem with this exploit is... she can shoot back (spit) as well. So it didn't work to well haha.

From what I've heard (and done) you can pull back to the stone paths leading up and around the back on each side of the broodmother. From there, you should be able to shoot the tentacles and/or take care of the adds without being hurt too severely. Once the tentacles are down, then you can attack her. Wash, rinse, repeat - and set it to easy if it's still too tough.

I suggest going back to camp to resupply and get rid of injuries. Just open the map periodically to find your way out. That area, if I remember correctly makes a big S shape. Once you reach the beginning of that zone you can travel back to Orzammar without having to go through all of the other areas.

Do you have more than enough health poultices and mana potions? If not, and if you have a saved game before the Broodmother encounter, I'd suggest getting out of there and go to the Brecilian Forest to stock up on elfroot and to the Mage Tower for the lyrium dust. Your friendly trader at camp has the flasks. All these three vendors have unlimited supply of the respective items.

With more health poultices and mana potions than you will need for that fight and beyond, you can simply "brute-force" through this encounter by using them. I suggest this because it is likely that your characters' builds might not be optimal and at this stage, short of using console commands or a respec mod and then reading up on skills and talents and such to fix them, it is too late to change them, so using health poultices and mana potions can cover many mistakes in builds.

I can also appreciate focusing more on the story and less on the technical side like what talents go well with what situations etc, so having an abundance of potions and poultices would definitely help

It might take a longer time trying to whittle down the boss' health, but you should be able to triump over her.

dude why are you scrambling at all

pause = space
pause and assess

press H so your dudes hold positions you give and dont run off
Then set you mages up on the stone - some say kill the tenticles I just went fo da mo
cone of cold is one of the spells in the cold line when you level up, its very handy, so is crushing prison, or that orb of invunribility, least she cant hurt you while you deal with the minons.

Hurt her, she calls her minions, I ran my whole party up the ramp to the right, I fought the minons there away from her tenticles, once they were dead I fronze the tenticles with the cone, and hit her some more, she calls more dudes
again run away and deal with them, Wynn can raise the dead and heal. Once the last minons are dead shes all yours run back and start hammering her

its a hard fight dude - no question - but rewarding to kill her

I had to run out, reform the party with wyn morigan and two heavy hitters, get some heals and run back - it was worth it cause I was fighting a losing battle - and make a save when your out just incase you need to try a couple of different teams.

but pause is your friend
pause give your orders
let it run
pause again issue new orders let it run
pause when something bad happens - issue orders - let it run
someone not doing something they are sposed to - you got it pause, have a beer, think about it, issue new orders let it run

* Cone of Cold is one of the Primal spells, and is one of the best skills in the game for mages.

* Why have you you got such a high strength stat? If you are a rogue dual wielder, you should only have 20 strength (for the tier 7 light armor), take lethality asap, and then get dex up to around 30, all the rest in cunning. Seriously. Eek, you are dual wielding daggers, yes?

* I just had a thought, you are not (please say you are not) letting the game auto-level your companions?

Seriously, read some of the character build posts, respec, and try again. I just (10 mins ago) did the spider queen and then the Broodmother with me (a 2-hander), Shale and Oghren (for their stories), and Leliana wielding a bow. No healers/mages at all. Granted, I set it to easy because of who I wanted to take with me and their classes, but still.

Equipment is nice (very important in fact) but tactics and build will win the day.

Edit: okay, here is a thread that deals very well with the rogue. Read it carefully.

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/66/index/223777

There are others for other classes.

The Broodmother CAN'T MOVE.

Throw a lot of are spells her way, dont' forget bombs...lots of bombs....and pelt her from distance with hit-and-run attacks from mele warriors. Goes down easy-peasy.

I guess I got lucky! I beat her first time but all my party members got wiped out straight away - I was using a warrior-tank type main character and managed to survive long enough to kill it..

Get PC, Wynne, Morrigan and Lelianna to safety on the rock opposite the BM.

Space them so that the BMs vomit damages only one at a time

Use your tank to kill tentacles.

Use staves to kill tentacles [H]old position on rock.

Once tentacles are gone - get Morrigan to unleash whatever AoE spell you have on the BM (Blizzard/Tempest/Inferno/Death Cloud whatever)

If Wynne has any AoE damage spell, use that as well.

When her health gets down a bit she calls her adds and unleashes tentacles again.

Forget the BM and kill the ads ( remember tentacles cant harm you if you are on the rock)

The BM calls 3 rounds of ads, ending with shrieks.

Once youve killed the shrieks, do an all ranged attack on her.

If you have any nature salves USE them

If you have bombs, use them on the Ads and tentacles and then the BM.

i beat the broodmother 2nd attempt on normal difficulty, however i left orzammar till last(that was 1st playthrough)

as you said you have it on easy, but some fights can still be tough.

i advise you to leave the broodmother and do other quests for now until your characters are more prepared.

also i strongly recommend you buy the shale downloadable content, the golem makes short work of anything and you can walk through the game with him at your side

Incidentally, I have not found this so called "Cone of Cold," that you all speak of. Neither Wynne nor Morrigan has it. In addition, I cannot find all of this poultice and what not in Orzimmar.

Cone of Cold is the 3rd spell in the sequence that starts with Winter Grasp. If you do not have it, you have developed your mages incorrectly. That is an intrinsic problem with RPGs. You often do not realize that you have developed your character incorrectly until way later in the game. The only solution is RESTART the game.

When it comes to spells, the ones you want all your mages to have as soon as possible are:

1. Cone of Cold for the reasons given.

2. At least one weapons enhancing spell such as Flaming Swords or Frost Weapons to give your warriors and rogues extra damage with their weapons.

3. Paralyze and Petrify as they work almost as well as Cone of Cold against Boss monsters.

4. Crushing Prison as it is a sure kill spell against mid level Boss monsters and can take any Boss monster out of action for several seconds while damaging them.

5. Arcane Shield is a good defense spell for mages.

Most of these spells are the 3rd or 4th spell in a sequence so I complete one sequence before starting another.

Spells of mass destruction such as Inferno are not very useful due to friendly fire and their long casting time. The exception is Mass Paralyze as there is no friendly fire. Getting one mass destruction spell is useful as there are a few situations where they work very well. Just make sure your party are using missile weapons so they do not rush into the spell area.

Low level spells that are also useful:

1. Winter Grasp as it has a small chance of freezing a monster for a short time.

2. Stone Fist as it will knock down most monsters.

3. Life Drain to restore HP for mages.

Grease and a fire spell is a deadly combination but I also found it too complicated to get right. It's a one/two punch that is devastating when done right and a waste of spells if you cannot get the timing right.

To beat the brood mother easily:

Get bows/crossbows for all your party.

Start the fight hitting the tentacles with arrows until they come to you. Then let your mage run away, switch to melee waepons and own the tentacles focusing all your attacks against one of them then going to another. If the tentacles chase your mage just keep him running or put him on the rocks behind the brood mother. I didn't need to do that, but if you are in trouble it is a good tactic.

After the tentacles have gone switch to ranged waepons, space your characters to avoid the splash damage of the spit ability and hit the brood mother until the tentacles come up again. Now the darkspawns start to come.

Do exactly the same thing you have done before: kill all the minions and the tentacles before focusing again against the brood mother (with bows and magic). When you see the darkspawns for the first time you think that they are many, but they are not. Repeat once more and you've won the fight.

If you have morrigan with you use her crowd control abilities to stop the tentacles while you kill the darkspawns.

If you have wynne just use her to heal your party and to petrify/shatter some low level enemy.
