I'm having trouble maintaining a consistent and balanced party. Right now I have Aerie, Jan, Haer'Dalis, Jaheira and Xan (I downloaded a mod to have him in BG2)

So I've got two questions: One, is it better to go through the game with the same party, more or less, or can you switch people in and out without too much trouble?

Two: I want to kick out Jaheira temporarily, but she gets upset with me and leaves forever if I try. All the advice I've read online tells me this is normal after a certain point if you're romancing her, but I'm playing as a girl, so that shouldn't be a problem. So my question is, what gives?

She does get upset when you kick her but in a normal (non-romance) game she should go to the Harper building (at the Docks)... are you saying that you have tried looking for her there but she won’t rejoin your group?
1. What’s your rep at? ... A very High/ Low rep could stop her joining.
2. What is your current standing with the Harpers? ... Did you kill any of them because that will indeed stop her from joining you?
3. Perhaps it’s a bug i.e, Does this Xan mod use any of the same variables as the Jaheira romance?

Are you sure you are not in a romance? I have a mod component installed which makes gender and race non-issues for the romances.

I haven't tried looking for her, but she's pretty adamant that I'll never see her again. I've already had the encounters where she renounces her harper status... does that only happen if you're in a romance with her?

My rep is on the high end of average.

And tbh, I'm not certain I'm not in a romance with her. One of the mods I'm using *does* have a component that enables romances regardless of gender requirements, but I haven't installed that component. I took a look at my save in Shadowkeeper and it seems I've had a couple of lovetalks without realizing it. So idk what happened there.

Not a bug then... If she gave up the Harpers to be with you then kicking her now will be final... as intended. If you did have a romance then she would leave on her own latter but at this point it is only keep/ kick her for good.

As a rule no... They DON'T normally improve while out of the party but you can get a lot of experience/ items from having a spare party slot and shuffling them all into it so as to do their various quests.
