I really enjoy playing casters in just about every game, so I was wondering what everybody thought about the mage in DA:O, and what the best/favorite specialization of it is.

I dislike the casting animations. When casting multiple times back to back it looks like you're leading a parade with the staff you're carrying.

I don't like any of the mage specializations in particular. I kinda wish spells had a cast time written in the description, though. It seems like they must have cast times, or skills that reduce the chance to be interrupted are meaningless.

Definitely going to do a mage ether second or third play through. Already rolled her.

Well, I am super excited for my mage (third planned playthrough at the moment). Kerri Amell is going to be a spirithealer and a shapeshifter. Focusing on healing, buffing, and area of effect spells.
I happen to love the staff animations, as well.

When I make my mage and play with it, I will focus on pure damage dealing. Wynne will back me up with some healing.

Mh. Blood Magic appeals to me through the concept and what it can be strictly used for. Assuming it controls blood and also uses it as a power-source (not to spoil, but one particular trailer showed something that LOOKED like that), I assume great power to both control and cause some carnage.
And hell, dealing with demons is just a good source of adrenaline.

Not entirely sure yet. I hope to go the path of Arcane Warrior, if it still feels like I can be a robe-wearing, sword-wielding mage without being tailored into having to be an armor-wearing, staff-wielding mage.
If not, I will either mod it or abolish my mage character altogether.

Mages are my favourite class by far. I'm planning to play a mage during my first playthough, of course. The spell options seem interesting enough, all the four schools of magic.
The only downside for me are the specializations. None of those appeal to me that much. Blood magic sounds the best but since I don't enjoy playing sinister characters, I don't know if I'm able to use it. I'll probably go for spirit healer/shapeshifter combo. I don't plan taking any other mages with me so I'll need to be the healer myself.

I would also consider going Arcane Warrior as well considering one of my favorite classes in D&D was a Cleric. Specialize in healing, buffing, and a couple of DPS spells... I'm set. =)

Well I'm definitely playing a mage from the start. I'm not sure what I'll think of it compared to other classes, but I'd be surprised if I hated it.
None of the specializations appeal to me however. Even though I'll very likely play an eeevil puppy kicking meanie, Blood Mage is so... meh. Arcane warrior isn't a thematic fit for my character and neither is Spirit Healer. Shapeshifter just doesn't excite me. Chances are I'll spend all my talents in general mage spells spread between the four schools.

Mage all the way on first play through. I'm thinking Blood Magic and Spirit Healer.
Somehow shapeshifter just doesn't seem very mage like, more druid. But then I'm way too rooted in D&D.
I'll also get the Rock First spell as soon as possible, love the animation. I'm on the fence about getting heal, but honestly after seeing some gameplay I'm not sure you can do without a healer and we won't get Wynne till later right?

For my mage play though I'm probably going to go with Blood, because my mage will be the stereotypical evil wench - but I will be able to settle for what ever allows me to blow more stuff up.

I sense someone who'll like Walking Bomb and the Primal Spell lines.Antiuna wrote...

Good job. The world needs more people who like to blow sh*t up.

I'm kinda torn on spell selection. I originally thought I would take frost spells + earth spells for the freezing/shattering combo, but I also want to take the mind blast --> crushing prison line. That would give me two weapon buffs, which feels like a waste of a spell slot. Maybe I'll just take that first frost spell to freeze one person and follow up with a shattering stone fist.

I havnt really decided if im shapeshifter or bloodmage yet. I have to admit it would be cool to control demons and it would be cool to turn into a spider soooo i need to flip a coin.

Going to make a elven mage, starting with the glyph and healing spells in creation and then speccing in arcane warrior for the fade shroud and might aura.
Shapeshifting is tempting too ( I <3 spiders!) but I'll probably make more than one (or two) mage characters anyway.

Lol, all the responses are pretty varied. Which I guess is kind of a good thing, it will probably end up on more play-throughs for me. =)

Mage is the first thing on my list. Nevermind how fun rogues are shaping up to be.
What kind of mage? Balance is the key, students. The path of the sentine-...er...balanced mage allows you to learn much. But the main reason is because we want to cast fireballs and still heal up our party.

My third playthrough will be a shapeshifter, definitely.
