Ok, I just finished yet another playthrough of the Bg saga...I can't believe it's still enjoyable after all this time! Anyway, only this time, maybe my 10th complete playthrough since the games were released. I thought, "Why doesn't Imoen permanently die and get sucked into the Abyss like the protagonist and all the other Bhaalspawn?" My theory is that she wasn't a Bhaalspawn in the first game, they just changed her for the sequel to make it more interesting. Has there ever been an official answer to this?

Isn't something said at Spellhold about Imoen being different?

its clearly a retcon and she can still die and be rez'ed in bg2/tob, you're just not meant to look into that aspect too closely.

IMO you don't become a true spawn until your taint activates... in the PC's case this occurs when you kill Tarnesh at the FAI (not technically the start of your adventure but still perceptive if you follow the cannon) and for your little sister it happens sometime after spellhold. That’s why Irenicus wants your soul for himself and is willing to let his sister have Imoen... it also explains him spending the time to show Imoen what he has done to Khalid because he is trying to stimulate her taint early but she is able to resist him with her innocence.
