How do you feel about random HPs at level ups?

A level 9 warrior without health bonuses can go from as low as 18 HP(10 + 8*1) upto as high as 90 HP(10 + 8*10). That is whoping 72 hitpoints differece! Though unlikely, if you get really unlucky, the former will have 48 HP at level 20, and a level 8 mage can kill him with a single skulltrap. oh pity.

I can only assume that the game is balanced around expected HP, which is 54(10 + 5.5*8) in this case.

I do not like to cheat  and want to play on a core rule, but I would be very disappointed if it is my protagonist who gets unlucky and stuck with low hitpoint. In one of my plays I indeed had a warrior protagonist who rolled 1,2,1 in 3 level ups to end up with 14 HP at level 4 at which point I just gave up and started over. Random HP roll is too punishing especially for warrior like classes those need to tank enemies while it barely affects mages.

NWN style level ups(HP per level has a bottom limit of the half of max) tweak still feels like a cheating since you will have on avarage 2 more hitspoints per level than on random rolls, so I don't use that tweak but I just hate it when the aforementioned event takes place.

How do you deal with this dillema(if you play on core or above)? Do you start over when your protagonist rolls too low?

It's your game, play it however you like. I play on core rules and just accept what the rolls are if it isn't too bad. I just finished a game and I actually *lowered* Sarevok's HP because the game started him with max when he joined in ToB. He's overpowered enough without being unkillable too, I think.

I think it's a great feature of the game, especially for no-reloads games. It's so exciting doing the level-ups in the early game.

I think that it's acttually the mages that are the most dependant on some CON bonus to the HPs, or they risk ending up with very few of them. As you say, it's very unlikely that a warrior will keep rolling crap through the whole levels 2-9.

If you do get bad rolls like in your example, maybe that party needs to change plans a bit: maybe have a priest (or summons) as tank while the main character is used as archer or flank attacker instead. Maybe tank less overall and use more disabling spells and kite around the tough meleers instead.

you can press 'esc' if you don't like the hitpoints received and try again. you can do this repeatedly until you receive an acceptable amount of hitpoints.

this is fairly tedious however, if you get poor rolls several times in a row. simply set the game to 'easy' difficulty before level up. after the level up, set it back. incidentally - this also works for learning scrolls if you're trying to learn scrolls for experience.

I don't know how much it's observed anymore, or how important it is, but this is technically the "no spoilers" forum, and there's a pretty huge spoiler in one of the replies on this thread...

The OP's original issue doesn't bother me, because if you play the game a few times a year I think it's better to have each PC have some randomness in how powerful/vulnerable they are. And the chances of rolling eight ones in a row is over 16 million to one.

I like having both options for both kinds of people:
If you want a challenge the accept the rolls and roll with them (pun intended).
If you think it's not enough, then hit escape or whatever and relevel up.
If you need all the help you can get because you are playing on Insane for example, then use max HP on level.
