Most pleasant surprise: Being able to romance Morrigan... When I first saw her in the Wilds, I couldn't imagine that you could get to... "you know what" her.

Most unpleasant: No Griffons! Why must the coolest beasts ever be extinct in our timeline?!

As for most pleasant, I'm surprised I havn't seen it in this thread yet - Oghren people, OGHREN. He is THE most hillarious character in this game, and I mean it. All of his drunken moments made me laugh so hard. How he tried to hit on my Warden, confusing him for a woman, and then passing out while falling to the ground. His banters with Wynne trying to bed her, as gross as they are. Hell, his banters with any character!

Oh, AGREED. I can't help but laugh when he's trying to tell you that joke in camp about the human walking into a bar, and he's laughing so hard he can't get past the opening line. And when he keels over...!

Another Oghren-related pleasant surprise: when he asks you to join him for a drink. Unless you have an awesome constitution, you pass out. Pure awesome.

And let's not forget his speech at the gate, or the reaction in the epilogue if you sacrificed yourself. He was certainly an underestimated character on my first playthrough, but I've grown to appreciate him a lot in subsequent ones.

Oh these were hilarious! I love it how he always passes out after his "Oghren moments". Oh, and how could I forget: Asschaps!
I just can't get enough of this guy.

And I had no idea that event scores with constitution! That's seriously awesome. I ended up passing out since I shoved most points for my tank in Str and mainly Dex, so eventually I've had around 20ish Con points. I assume you need around 30 points to endure his ale?

DJ000, yours was a fascinating ending.  Wow. I actually could have lived with that type of ending with Morrigan.  I was denied of course, no matter what I did.  To give my opionion on your ending, at least yours was truly epic and you walk away in heroic mourning, bearing away the price (that of a painful loss) of destroying evil, as opposed to feeling like a gelded dimwit like me.  My Dark Ritual option was pure bull.  I did not do it "to save my life," which only added further insult to injury.

You and Alistair got to prove Morrigan wrong, that love is not a "weakness."  I unfortunately proved her right and felt anything but an epic hero.

Yours was the preferable ending for me.  You fought for each other (as well as for the greater good) and I know you would have taken the final blow to save him, but he wouldn't allow it.  Now that is EPIC!  I wasn't allowed to fight and die for anything personal.  Very anti-climactic.  Thanks for sharing.

Now this is a fsacinating perspective from a male who romanced Morrigan, and how the whole ritual affected you and the game experience. And it shows male characters too, get screwed out of a chance for a romantic ending, of sacrificing one's self for love. The main love interest, Morrigan, pretty much uses you and leaves you, so you live, but are left with nothing. In all reality, there really is no happy ending for male lovers of Morrigan. In the end, you never get the girl, or, get to do something epic for her. If you are romancing leliana, you basically have to cheat on her and produce a questionable offspring so that you can live, unless, of course, you decide to throw Alistair at the Archdemon, which, if you're playing a nice guy, you might be less inclined to do.

Thank you for sharing that.

I found it an unpleasant, but endearing surprise, when Alistair sacrificed himself for my mage, who had made him king, and he had to break it off with. Despite ending the relationship, he still cared enough and threw himself at the archdemon, wouldn't let her do it. i was not expecting that. it was the only other playthrough I made him king, because I was experimenting with how a hardened Alistair works in the game, and wasn't surprised that he broke it off, and the relationship went to 100 "friendly". Yet he still loved her, and refused to watch her die, despite the fact she pretty much intended on doing the deed. It was unpleasant and unexpected, but rather touching just the same.

Pleasant surpise: Walking into redcliff castle after battling my way through to see teagan bouncing around,  like an idiot. After witnessing that, my only thoughts were: "Wow. Even after being mind-controlled, demon possessed, and drooling and giggling like a lunatic, this guy is still so friggin HAWT" If that doesn't define STUD, I don't know what does. Teagan is indestructable.

So many pleasant moments in this game. Overall, I loved it.

*Broken Circle. This was an awesome, brilliant quest. I loved every bit of it... the story, the fade, everything! Great job, Bio!

*Romances with Alistair and Zevren. Loved them both. Tremendous characters for totally different reasons!

*Shale meets Caridin at the Anvil. That was just awesome, the entire scene between them!

*City Elf Origin. Oh...my...God. I was an emotional wreck. That story was so powerful that I was more profoundly affected than I have been in any game I've ever played. Masterful job, Bio.

*Party banter. GREAT lines, memorable lines, too many to delineate. However, Sven agreeing to indulge Morrigan's curiosity about Quanari sex, along with the explanation of the steps she'd have to take to insure her own safety during the deed... pure gold.

*The sheer volume and variety of side quests! Magnificent.

Unpleasant moments... yes, there were a few of them... very few, but very, very unpleasant.

*The Dark Ritual. I was stunned by this, absolutely gobsmacked. Here I discover that the only to save both Gray Wardens is to basically coerce the man I love into an unwanted sexual act... literally pimp him out  to save my own skin. It was vulgar, and even after reading every defense and explanation of it on these forums, it still makes absolutely no sense. I hated this. More than hated, I resented it .  Requiring "rape" (that's what coerced sex is, after all)  for a "happy ending" is really dispicable, in my opinion.  I'm pretty shocked that Bio took such a cheap route there when the rest of the game was so beautifully written and well thought-out.

*Having Alistair dump me after I made him king. Huh? That was bad enough, but after refusing Morrigan's request... I might as well sacrifice myself at that point... Alistair suddenly turns to me after the archedemon is down, decides he loves me again, then commits suicide and leaves that b*tch Anora on the throne. Arghhhh. Horrible, just horrible, and no way to reload without having to play hour upon hour of those horrid end-game battles.

*Those Horrid End-game Battles. Too damned much. It became so grueling and so much drudgery that I just wanted to get the game over already!

*Alistair's temper tantrum at Landsmeet. Come on, already. 80 hours of building a character of unwavering loyalty and sense of duty, a man who loves the gray wardens with all of his being, who became furious with my PC when she asked what would happen if we just went away together and berated her because ending the blight was our DUTY as gray wardens... then suddenly he is lobotomized into a fit of rage, forgets about his duty, forgets about the blight, forgets about saving his beloved Feraldon... and just walks away. WTF? Would never, ever have happened. Talk about creating a behavior completely out of character simply to force a plot twist. Shame, Bio.

All in all, the good points were 95% of the game, too numerous to mention. But the bad points were really, really bad. Really. Bad.

Bottom line, Dragon Age: Origins is still the best game I've played in the past decade!

~Good Points~

* Messing with Cammen's head. I did that last night and laughed for a few good minutes. I feel sorry for the kid though.

* Party banter is what keeps me playing. Some of these people just cannot get along and it makes for delicious talk.

~Bad Points~

* The Fade, I really hate that place. It's long and while changing forms is interesting, it seems like it goes on for two areas too long.

That reminds me, another "pleasant" surprise.

At the Pearl, where you ask Sanga to "surprise you". I did this a couple times. Once, i end up in a room with a whip, the second time, "extraction tools" on the bed, and the third time, I woke in a room full of nugs.

definitely worth the 40 silvers a trip.

Amen Di, I agree.  I thought it was a classless piece of writing, to strip all choice, wedging your PC into an unrealistic plot bridge he/she would never allow to pass without some sort of confrontation if Morrigan refused to come clean.  Such a let down after 60 hours of clawing and levelling your way through Ferelden.  It didn't fit, no matter the apologists weak arguments to support it.  I found the Dark Ritual extraordinarily stupid, unrealistic and contrived all for the sake of a hook.   Literally it's an "our approval system doesn't really mean anything" and "oh here let me kick you in the crotch before the battle you've spent months preparing yourself for and you must do this stupidly ambiguous thing or I'm walking and you get to die broken hearted with an annihilated soul, and then I smirk at your silly chump self as I go on to do whatever it is a want (must)."  So contrived.

If I'd been on the team I'd have hooked every guy and gal that played this game and made all players feel like they'd been true to their PC, retained their dignity, and still made "Dark Fantasy" by ensuring Morrigan was impregnated with a demon child, even though I wouldn't be present.

Nothing fit, it seems even the sacrifice was denied us, even when we opted for it.  I suppose I really need to read the fine print of "Dark Fantasy" before I invest this much time again. That seems a license to kill in story telling. Wow, 2 and a half full days in front of my TV and all I ended up with was a kick in the...I guess this is considered great writing today, huh?

I did that too, and laughed so hard I nearly peed myself. It was so funny, I did it again. You're right (again) Skadi, that was a very pleasant surprise. I loved that after the extraction tools thing your health has been hit. Naughty, naughty. S&M dao style.

Unpleasant: My first Landsmeet where I was in an Alistair romance and chose to spare Loghain. I was stunned with the outburst and really thought he'd come back at some point. When he was gone from the line-up, I stopped in my tracks. It was the first time I had gone back to a previous save for a do-over. The second most unpleasant surprise was trying to get away from the original Landsmeet decision as much as possible and making him king just to be sure he wouldn't walk out and then getting a horrible break-up scene in front of all my companions. All in all, it just wasn't a good night for me since I got dumped back to back by a virtual character. I went to bed upset, not wanting to finish the game. =p

Hear, hear.

Pleasant Surprise: Party banter. I can't just name one, all of them are preciously funny when they need to be.

Actually, if you're a male PC, you can still have Alistair do the ritual. I've always had him do it while playing my male Amell, because he couldn't bring himself to technically cheat on Leliana, or let Alistair die.

Unpleasant Surprise - The Morrigan kick in the spuds.Left me without an offensive mage for the last battle. And heartbroken lol

Pleasant Surprise - Scale and Scope. I expected Mass Effect in medieval times; 30hr playthrough and one or two tough choices. I got 60hrs out of my first run and every main quest had gut wrenching choices. Brilliant.

True. I guess it''s possible for a male with Leliana to have a happy ending, provided your character dislikes Alistair enough to coerce him into doing the act.

But yes, the dark ritual really left a bad taste in the mouths of many. For Morrigan, playing as a female, it was rather disappointing, because one of my characters had befriended her, and as time went on, Morrigan seemed to soften a bit. Then to have the bombshell dropped on you: the only reason she was travelling with you the whole time was this ritual her mother cooked up, and unless you comply, she's going to leave you for not doing what she wants. And, if you're romancing Alistair, you have to not only give her what she wants, but subject your love to a form of sex that could almost be called rape.

For a male character in love with her, it really has to be a massive kick in the balls. All this time, you thought you found your love of your life, and were looking forward to finally enjoying life together after the Blight is ended, only to find out that basically, you will give her a demon child, or she will leave. And of you do give into her wants, she makes it clear she's going to dump you anyway and run off with said demon child, forbidding you from ever having contact with it or her again. In otherwords, you are little more to her than a breeding stud. Either way, you hurt.

Which is why when I play a male PC, I shall bed Morrigan for the achievement, but will end up loving Zevran, and maybe Leliana. Zevran maybe a man, but at least when he falls in lvoe with you, you know it's because of you, not an alterior motive. And the same goes for leliana, who, depending on the epilogue, might end up dying because she can't live without you.

As lovely and desirable as Morrigan might be, for a PC with anything but a heart of ice, you will end up shattered in the end.

Most pleasant surprise:

A tie between Leliana's Song (it gave me chills. There I said it. ;) ) and Sten. I couldn't stand Sten on my first (dwarf commoner rogue) playthrough, but then determined to use him no matter what on my human mage and -- guess what? -- Sten's awesome. He made some nasty comments about my leadership while we were in Haven and then started to fight me. I bested him and my approval rating with him soared. I love surprises and that, for me, was a real surprise.

Most Unpleasant:

That after such a great game, my game-ending options were basically choosing between crappy and crappier. DA:O starts to unravel from the Landsmeet onward. The only way to survive the game is to do something completely repugnant (all of the "survival options" struck me as repugnant, though for different reasons). A bit lame there at the end, Bioware, imo. Too bad. :(

I mentioned it in another thread, but the sequence of "extraction tools" and then the nug herd was some sort of hint that nugs are the gerbils of Ferelden, urban myth or no.

Kinda made me wonder....

Leliana's song... it kinda creeped me out. I couldn't get past the animation. Plus, why the heck did they include instruments? She's just singing, and we have like an orchestra going or something? I hated that part.

I thought the whole Zathrian/Lady sacrifice at the end of the Nature of the Beast quest (if you convince him to end the curse) was quite poignant.

The build-up to the broodmother was perfect.

Probably the most unpleasant experience I can think of is watching them use generic animations to demonstrate emotions which don't quite fit in the context of the situation, most notably with Dog. Like when he backs away in that cowering sort of way, or growls at certain statements... just doesn't feel right.

As a player who avoided Spoilers and used no walkthrough, the whole game was new to me. But I inadvertently read that all romance paths with Morrigan fall apart, and I knew some players were angry she rushed off with child.

So I expected to be upset as well, yet it turned out as a bittersweet surprise. Morrigan was clearly sorry to part with my PC, as he was with her. But she was determined, and like many other moments in the game, her choice had been set in motion before anyone could know the circumstances.

It didn't feel at all cheap to me. I had three options for the ending, all demanding a high sacrifice: my friend, my life, or my love.

I chose not by which I valued least, but rather by which seemed most essential to my companions. Morrigan started on this path long ago, and the fact that she fell in love on the way didn't shake her sense of purpose any more than it did mine.

So I nominate both.

Best Surprise: the choice of the Dark Ritual.

Most Unpleasant Moment: the choice of the Dark Ritual.

I have new one to add to favorite pleasant surprises after another playthrough: befreinding Zevran. I couldn't stand him at first, but gave him a chance...loyal, hilarious banter, stands with me against the Crow assassins, seems genuinely disappointed when I didn't take him in to slay the Archdemon, stays with me in the end. I never would have expected him as a friend at our first meeting.

I have to remind myself of what my limited gaming experience had led me to expect from a video game and say that I was more than surprised at having such multi-dimensional relationships with your party members.  I had been geared to expect that you just kill stuff, with a little RP here and there.

Unpleasant: Well, there were plot twists, but I can't call any of them unpleasant. The surprise adds to the overall satisfaction IMO.

Most Pleasant: All the difficult choices in the game.

Unpleasant: Duncan's death, I had just come from having my sorry *** saved in the City Elf Origin, only to have Duncan get killed by Loghain's betrayal, I swear I flipped out at that point.
