Endings like the one in"The Descent".

While I'm a huge fan of "They lived happily ever after" endings, it really depends on the type of story for me. I also really love bittersweet endings like Red Dead Redemption.

The hero completes his goal, on his own terms, but has to sacrifice at least something in the process. That's why I like DAO ending.

I love the happy ones in general. Hero lives, goal accomplished. I just can't help feeling disappointed when I fight through a whole game and do my very best to survive just to get killed in some ridiculous situation that would never happen in a million years to anyone.

Come to think of it, pretty much the opposite of ME3's ending is what I like.

On the other hand, Dragon Age had an aweseome ending. More of that, please!

The kind that doesn't have a chronic fissure in it. :|

The hero sacrifices a lot, but after saving the world/doing something good, doesn't get recognised for his actions. He becomes just a person in the crowd.

One that fits the rest of the story. Don't put a downer ending onto a largely upbeat story, and vice-versa.

The ending of the The Last Samurai is great, as an example of something I personally enjoy. Private Ryan would be another that is done particularly well.

Pretty much this. Plus resolution with the characters and endings that make the player feel a sense of accomplishment. Perfect example: ME2 Suicide mission

Probably bittersweet with more sweet than bitter.

I do like happy endings as well such as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Avatar the Last Airbender. Both had happy endings but made me feel like I was saying goodbye to a friend forever

The traditional happy ending where all is well with the world at the end, and the main hero has eliminated the threat/main bad guy of the story. I personally don't mind a bittersweet ending either, but i'd much rather prefer the former than of the latter type of ending.

Emotional endings that break my heart into a million pieces. Best example I can think of is the ending to The Walking Dead video game.

In a word: fulfilling. Bittersweet words, but the key is that the end feel like it was a victory. Essentially, the opposite of ME3. It's not about getting what's ideal, but feeling like you earned what you did get by (really) ripping it out of the final boss (or bosses, or whatever)'s hands.

"Once again I stand atop the broken bodies of my enemies... - Victorious but not unscarred. - The Earth-borne Directorate has been destroyed. - And the Overmind lies dead and trampled beneath the ashes of Char. - As for my unlikely allies, I think that I shall allow them a reprieve. - For in time I will seek to test their resolve, and their strengths. - They will all be mine in the end, for I am the Queen of Blades. - None shall ever dispute my rule again."

An ending that has a sense of purpose to it, vague as that may sound to most of you.

A happy/good ending, but I want to feel like I earned it; things should only start going wrong as a result of player choices. I don't need babying but I don't play games to depress myself. Also, if I've taken my character from the beginning of the game to the end I should also have some idea what they do next, and ideally the support characters too.

And don't give me multiple choices all of which end badly (looking at you, GTA4).

A good ending is one that makes sense and leaves no stone unturned, be it happy or sad.

The graphic novels turned film Sin City have some fantastic endings, even though they're gut wrenchingly sad at times. In particular, That Yellow Bastard and The Hard Goodbye end seriously depressingly, but they couldn't have ended any other way. Those are the ones that stick with you.

Open endings can be good as well I think.

Sometimes though, it's just silly. I think they sometimes make them open just because they think open is the same as clever and good.

Exactly. They're hard to pull off, but when they do, it's phenominal.

The problem is, people will think they're making an open ending, when they're just making a bad one a lot of the time.

I'd definitely prefer an ending that is well executed and fits in with the established tone and themes of the story.

One that makes sense in the overall story and tie most of the open threads (especially character-wise).
