yeah, I feel inclined to recite a quote I heard once "only the savage views the endurance of pain as the measure of worth." Though I don't want to come across as racist or anything.

technically, you're not racist, but ethnocentric and culturally elitist.

and if your quote about only "the savage" valuing pain holds true, then millions of women who've endured childbirth have nothing special to offer, so you're sexist by default as well.

hope that helps clear up what a COMPLETE docuhe you are.

I like you.

lol.  only because you don't know me yet!

I'd like to get to know you, though.

So! I like that the Dwarven tattoos are made of squares while the Dalish ones are... not! Pretty neat, uh?

I'm assuming that you can only place tattoos on your face because it's most likely the only place on your character that won't be covered. I do think that Hawke being allowed to use Castless and Dalish tattoos was bleh though. More variety is always (usually) good.

I want a Chakotay tattoo. Do that = happy dance. Okay maybe not a dance more like a jig. A playful jig.

While "good" is purely subjective, I would agree that we should get some body tattoos, and more designs overall. I really liked the hard, angular dwarven designs, I like to see those show up for the protag again.

Also, with Frostbite we should see a bump in detail and definition. In DA:O and DA2 the tattoos looked too blurry imo, so I never really used them (except for my Dalish Elf).

Call me maybe?

I don't consider what Lord Aesir said to be such a bad thing. It's not like he actually said he believed the quote, just that he cannot help but think of it.

Besides, I think that quote does hold true. It doesn't state that anyone feeling pain views it as a measure of worth, it suggests that those who undergo pain purely to prove their worth, are savages. I think that if you do undergo pain for that very purpose, then you are a savage to some degree. Getting preggers does not mean you undergo pain to prove your worth, in fact it's often entirely the opposite. You go through that pain, so that you may make someone else, "worthy" of living. It's natural, piercing your skin is not.

While I agree with the gist of what you're saying, the childbirth comment was not an apt analogy.

Why do you think that? Can you provide a definition of savage that doesn't boil down to 'people who think differently than my cultural norm?'

It's natural, piercing your skin is not.

Civilization is built on doing things that aren't natural: clothing, agriculture, tool use, written languages. If we're going to get down to it, a woman who is experiencing pain because it's 'natural' is being more savage than one who experiences pain because it hold social significance to them.

After all, the tattoo is a work of art with a specific social meaning. Popping out a baby is something my cat has done.

Maria, je t'aime.

Only Dalish elves and casteless dwarves should be allowed to have tattoos. Since DAIII's protagonist is a human, I don't think face tattoos should be available in the character creator at all.

Thread about tattoo options is created. Someone's already accused of being sexist not even a page in.

Awesome.

What I don't get is why DA2 let us plaster our protagonist with dwarven (and I think elven and dalish) tattoos. Aren't those restricted to the race? Just a little something that irked me but I guess they were there to pad out the variety. More elegant tattoo designs would be nice, I was really fond of that one that swirled around the eye and such, and less symmetry please ^_^

Since it's Orlais maybe we can get some really ridiculously elaborate ones? But now that I think of it, would the Orlesians consider tattoo/war paint fashionable at all?

I doubt it. I think they'd be more into elaborate makeup styles of the 'can still be washed off' variety.
Think Prince poppycock.

On that note, please give us more elaborate makeup choices?:P

If my protagonist doesn't look like shes swan dived into a wedding cake at one point, then I will be disappointed indeed.

Swan dive into the best night of your life!

Sorry, on a more serious note: I endorse this notion.

I would like to see more variety and the ability to have a contrasting outline on the facial tattoos. Having body tattoos would be cool but kind of a waste since armor and clothing would just cover it up anyway.

Don't the Chasind have tattoos?

I think it'd be cool if we could select a Chasind background.

Yea that didn't make any sense tbh. It's not as if the 'savage' comment isn't enough to criticize without going off in a logical direction that I'm pretty sure is devoid of actual logic.

Face tattoos are pretty weird unless there is some cultural reason for it. I'm not opposed to them existing in game, but body tattoos should be included too.

So you're saying that women who have given birth are worth more than ones that haven't? Or that a woman that doesn't take pain meds while giving birth is worth more than one that does?

I'm confused.

Body tattoos would be nice. But if they have a social meaning that should be told and explained before we make our character.

We've seen both City Elves and *humans* have face tattoos as well. I'm not sure why they should be takaen out of the CC just beause the PC is human.

Also, at least the console version of DA2 only allows you to get the human tats... I've just checked with the mirror, not a single casteless or dalish one.

In any case, I'd like some more tattoo designs as well as body tattoos. I think Fable 2 did those quite nicely...
