You can basically make it as hard on yourself as possible by posing restrictions in the use of spells / items and such.
I mainly play only on hard. So when I get the idea of (ever) playing on nightmare it will be fresh and new for me.
I'm in no hurry, no hurry at all.
The most important thing is enjoying the game the way you like (to play). Take some tips from the nice and good forum people here but do not literally copy another player's character. See where you draw the line where things are still fun and where they are starting to get not-so-fun. LOL, look at me saying that, I literally made my arcane warrior resemble Leliana as much as possible when it comes to appearance (I have only slighter darker red hair) because I like her soooooooooooo much

When for instance you play an AW solo you can say 'No' to armour heavier then robes for a challenge.
I can already hear people saying 'only if you like dying a lot'.
I think it's basically the freedom you want to create your character in
I have a hunch that for solo-ing nightmare level you basically need to build up your PC in one way, and one way only (other builds prove too hard / impossible to play otherwise).
I myself like to make my group as deranged as possible (but mind you still not to too far from the trodden path...still using taunts, bardsongs, crowdcontrol, healing and so on).
Or when you want to make a dual wield dps-warrior restrict yourself to medium armour.
I could go on like forever but I think I have ranted enough.
