If you really want the game harder...there's a mod out there that increases the difficulty on Hard and Nightmare. Go grab that.

Here's  link to the Nightmare Plus Mod

It changes alot of things including mage balance, enemy AI (no more bow pulling 1 mob) and potion cooldowns.
So if you want a really tough challenge it might be worth a try.

Do you know if there is a mod that changes the AI, perhaps the potions, but not ramping up difficulty overall?

I think the game is plenty hard enough. What's the point of making the game so hard that 3/4 of the people who play it can't beat it?

Sure, those of us who have played through the game, and read up on the mechanics, builds, and strategies can breeze through the game, but we are the small minority. I know the first time I played through the game I had a lot of trouble. My sword and board build was crappy, I had no idea how to use tactics, and I was generally screwing stuff up left and right.

Many gamers have a tendency to forget how challenging a game can be after they have learned all the tips and trick.

This thread should be merged with the thread complaining about enemy 'i win' buttons.  Then the survivor should be mated with some other thread to produce a super thread.

Can you then use said thread to ride across the ocean and find previously unreachable caverns containing strange and powerful new materia to make the rest of the game truly trivial?

Now that's a blast from the past !

I'm a little older with waning reflexes compared to some of the youngsters playing the game (30s & 40s, for example), so my first playthrough on Easy suited me just fine. Now, on my second game, I'm using Normal, but I'm also using mods that really buff my chars, so perhaps I should be playing on Hard or Nightmare (that's next). However, I'm enjoying the game more since I'm not experiencing Your Journey Has Ended screens that displays when the entire party is wiped out.

If you find the game too easy, even on the max difficulty setting, without modded equipment, then quit using all the "power" spells, etc. Tone them down and then assess your prowess.

Twainer is correct about the Nightmare Plus mod which should be used at least once by those who think the game is "too easy."

I also agree with Javanaut's post. Bioware should tweak the difficulty settings by adding a couple beyond the max, something like Insane and Psycho for the really hard-core players. I have no idea how difficult a task that would be.

As I stated, I'm experimenting with some mods, and having a blast for the most part. Most of the modded equipment surpass what you can find in the game, including the Juggernaut armor set. Yeah, most are god-like compared to the vanilla offerings, but the mods offer different flavors which please my older palate.

I played through my first time on normal, lowering it to easy on some hard fights (revenants). But the second time arround I'm playing a kickass blood mage and I've geared up my team to the max. I'm sort of finding hard mode too easy.

My first playthrough was as a mage on Nightmare. I'm old enough to remember when games were hard, so I play most games on the highest difficulty setting for the first run. I found the game of moderate difficulty, it took a bit of thought, and I made a few bad choices, though I didn't really screw anything up. I didn't reload if a character fell, and my main had 4 injuries so that should be an indication of how I found it. My subsequent playthrough as a rogue was much easier (got the Kind of a Big Deal achievement) and my current playthrough as a solo warrior is a bit tougher than my first (though I just got enough gold to round out my 100% spell resist gear, so I expect things will get easier).

You can basically make it as hard on yourself as possible by posing restrictions in the use of spells / items and such.
I mainly play only on hard. So when I get the idea of (ever) playing on nightmare it will be fresh and new for me.
I'm in no hurry, no hurry at all.
The most important thing is enjoying the game the way you like (to play). Take some tips from the nice and good forum people here but do not literally copy another player's character. See where you draw the line where things are still fun and where they are starting to get not-so-fun. LOL, look at me saying that, I literally made my arcane warrior resemble Leliana as much as possible when it comes to appearance (I have only slighter darker red hair) because I like her soooooooooooo much Image IPB

When for instance you play an AW solo you can say 'No' to armour heavier then robes for a challenge.
I can already hear people saying 'only if you like dying a lot'.
I think it's basically the freedom you want to create your character in
I have a hunch that for solo-ing nightmare level you basically need to build up your PC in one way, and one way only (other builds prove too hard / impossible to play otherwise).
I myself like to make my group as deranged as possible (but mind you still not to too far from the trodden path...still using taunts, bardsongs, crowdcontrol, healing and so on).
Or when you want to make a dual wield dps-warrior restrict yourself to medium armour.
I could go on like forever but I think I have ranted enough. Image IPB

I think they ought to just make a level of the game where nearly every battle is impossible, and I'll sit back and watch all the people coming around saying they did it solo. Make it truly impossible. I'm sure many would beat it with their undies on.

If its not hard enough for you, mod it. One of my mods in my sig increases the difficulty a fair bit, without messing with abilities, items, AI etc. Just makes you hit weaker, get hit harder and puts a shared cooldown on potions, so you can't chain-chug them when things get hairy.

If you don't want to mod it, then there's really nothing that can help, besides self-imposing some retarded limits (like play through naked, specced for 2H swords, using a dagger), or sit around twiddling your thumbs waiting months for a patch.

It can never happen simply because such a lie would eventually be uncovered, so keep dreaming ..  or try it yourself. "Design" an impossible encounter (say beating Flemeth solo on NM in Flying Swarm form only .. ), then post here you beat it. My guess is that you'd be "proven" wrong sooner than you realize.

Hehe.. I have actually goofed about with flying swarm mode. Instead of putting points into magic put them into dex... You can then zoom around in flying swarm mode and take very little damage. It is quite funny really. I haven't tested it vs dragons (doubt it would work) but vs revenants it is absolutely hilarious.

I think the single easiest self-imposed restriction you can make to increase the difficulty is just don't pause. It makes a difference.
