So, having gotten to the Deep Roads for the second time, I had a thought, and I couldn't find the answer anywhere. Why can't we search the text of posts, instead of just titles?

Anyway, the first time through I just told his Filda he was dead, because it seemed kindest. Now though, I thought, can he be brought home? Cured, or at least helped, not left alone in the dark? Or would it be kinder to just kill him?

Who has tried to do something other than use him as a merchant and till his mother he's dead?

You can tell his mother that he is alive but didn't want her to know about it. She says that she's going to go find him but this happens "off-camera", so to speak.

Since the Darkspawn taint is irreversible, the most merciful thing is probably to kill him and then tell his mother that he's dead, without mentioning how.

Oghren more or less states that Ruck is on his way out already, so I don't believe that he can be cured. All throughout the game it's made more or less clear that once someone is infected, that's it. Except the mabari apparently, who can be helped by medicine and medicinal herbs for some reason.

I took Zevran with me, and if you don't pick certain dialogue options, he decides that Ruck deserves the mercy of an easy death, and then he follows through. There is no option for the PC to intervene at that point.

I was very surprised. This was the first time that I can remember that an NPC made a decision, and then followed through with it without my PC being able to stop it. He more or less took charge at that point, with Oghren agreeing with him.

I still told his mother that Ruck died a quick and heroic death though. The first part was true, the second part a lie, but I decided that her mind should be put at some kind of ease.

But, but... Ruck just wants to ruck. Besides he has an endless supply of deep mushrooms and some decent armour and weapons at that.

Wonder, who has acted as a model for that character. Somehow he looked like our Mr. G. Could be just me, though.

Jaheira killed Baron Ployer outright in BG2.

I found the whole Ruck/Filda storyline to be one of the saddest parts of DA:O - especially the bits where he rambles on about hot stew and and calls the Warden his friend after he agrees to tell Filda he is dead.

And yes - unlimited bomb making supplies - for acid flasks?

Another storyline that made me quite sad was that of the little boy on the bridge in Lothering - waiting for his mother - who is obviously dead.

Thanks for replying peeps. No help for poor Ruck then. And I don't need him for supplies, I've got Innodil's Pocket Plane.

Saddest story though is little Amethyne, sweet Iona's daughter from the human noble origin. Sucks that we can't help her.

Got to agree with you there. I wanted to help her too.

You get Ruck's shield as a reward if you keep him alive. Armor of the Devine Will(Best templar Armor) & Shield Of the Legion (dragonbone) is a worth a buy as well as the grandmaster rune that he has.

You also get a shield from his mother, a shield that her husband made. But I forgot the name of it, at the time I had not much interest in shields.

Also, Zevran doesn't do the mercy-killing until after the PC had the opportunity to deal with Ruck once.

Oddly enough, it's called Ruck's Shield. :)

I seem to have missed the Amythine one...where do you wish you could help her? Where do you run into her?

He says, outright, that he doesn't want love, hot stew and blankets. He says that his mother expects a child... a happy, smiling boy. Not a monster. It's sad, but he's doing it all out of love for his mum, and fear that she'll love her memory of him more than the real thing, now that he's become like this. One of the saddest things I've ever seen in-game, more so because I couldn't really help in any way. Even worse than feeling like a bastard when I sided with Bhelen.

Oh, and skills on the name, Susan.

Yeah among the several people I wish I could've helped more none stand out more than Ruck and Iona's daughter.

I was very upset about Zevran's mercy killing, that is, until I hit the Anvil of the Void sequence. Gads, I still get shivers going up and down my spine thinking about the horrors there. I was also consoled by the fact that the game kept telling my PC that infected people end up dying a horrible death. It also helped that Oghren stated "he's on his last leg" or maybe he said "he's on the way out", but both have the same meaning.

The other character I wish my PC could've helped more is Nadezda. I just like her for some reason. Maybe because she's upfront, brutally honest, and her dung and kneecap story just broke my heart.

ah, true. I'm hoping that siding with Bhelen makes things better for Casteless and stops guard brutality like that. Harrowmont is purely conservative, so he'd just end up making the Dwarves more reclusive and amplifying Orzammar's problems. Bhelen, however, wants to give Casteless a chance, and seems much more progressive.

However, Harrowmont seems deceitful and evil in the sort of typical, "greater good", under-the-radar politician way, whereas Bhelen is balls-out nasty when faced with a problem. Ah well, let's see.

That is one of my favorite things about Zevran.  He does take charge occasionally.  If you don't have Oghren with you, he explains a bit more, but the end result is the same.

Sorry for the newbie type question but I completed the anvil quest and thought I went through all the deep roads sections and never saw him, can anyone be specific as to his location?

I inadvertantly got into a fight with Ruck so ..... I ended up killing him myself. It was a mercy though.

I really liked Nadezda too, maybe it was her voice (and obviously tragic story)

He is in thaig ortan, before the "golem bridges". But it's kind of weird you never saw him, even if you're not looking in his direction, your forced to pass nearby and he screams quite loud ...

yea - there is a group of spiders and he screams and runs back towards his "home". East side of the cavern where the two bridges are. Near the chest that has the records that proves that Orta (Found in Shaperate) is a member of clan Ortaig.

The current search system (only the titles) is fairly simple.  But with the forums so large it would take far too long to search the body of posts too.

They COULD implement a keyword system in the posts that would speed this up (as I'm pretty sure most 'off the shelf" Forum software does) but since the Bioware programers created it from scratch so they could use their own custom features, they haven't implemented this.
