Look at all the examples of female teachers caught having sex with underaged male students.  The most common reaction from guys is "wow, where was that teacher when I was growing up!?" etc.  There's a huge double standard.

That is not rape. Those teachers did not hold them after clase to violate thos students against their will. I am wondering if you even know what the word means or what is being discussed.

Others, like me, play because they want to learn, grow. For me, a game should be as thought-provoking as a book.

How is this, at all, related to the portrayal of sexual violence? How does that get at this end? How does a grimdark world get at this end?

There are a number of books that are stupidly grimdark. I'd say that the majority of genre fiction isn't thought-provoking, so would be easy enough for game to reach that level.

Sex with a minor is rape because minors cannot give consent.  The fact that I needed to explain that is incredibly sad.

'Grim dark' has nothing to do with authors trying to bring realism and mature themes into their work. It's a useless buzzword. I've listened to Martin describe his writing. Believe me, being edgy is the last thing he's striving for.

Every genre of entertainment has their COD/Transformers/Da Vinci code/Abagails Party/Pitbull. Schlock sells.

So GRR Martin writes all fiction now?

That is only rape in the legal sense, which is irrelevant to the discussion.

Rape is rape.  Both have long lasting emotional and psychological effects on their victims.  Just because someone isn't violently held down and raped doesn't make it any less legitimate, and all forms of rape are pertinent to this topic.

Well, I am already there.

Whats next?

If you really wanted to tackle rape in a mature manner, I'd suggest looking below:

The majority of rape is 'not really rape.'

It doesn't conform to society's rape narrative: the obviously evil dude who drags the virtuous woman from her home while she screams, begs, and (futility) fights him off. He will then slap her around, tear off her clothing, threaten her life and viciously violate her. Afterwards, she will become near catatonic or possibly suicidal (older narrative) or will become a violent badass (newer narrative).

If the City Elf origin wanted to be mature and realistic about rape, Vaughn wouldn't have to laugh evilly, abduct women, and hold them with armed guards. He would simply have a bunch of elven maids in his house and he'd have sex with them whenever he felt like it. Afterwards, they'd go back to doing their work. Other human nobles would consider him a bit of a 'rogue' or 'Cassanova.' The elven servants would dislike it but understand that's just the way thing are.

This wouldn't work in a video game because:
1) It's not nearly splashy or violent enough.
2) Many audience members would decide that's 'not really rape.'

There's this underlying premise in this whole conversation that there's some kind of intrisic merit in the ostensibly realistic portrayal of this sort of violence, but what is that, exactly?

All I can see as having actual artistic merit is the point Alan raised: to have the protagonist be completely powerless That would be a novel use of the gaming medium and its interactivity. But all I see here (from other gamers) are requests that (mostly) female companions are assaulted to show... effectively, that the settng is "realistic" in some way. And frankly, that's offensive.

Yes, this.

This thread is being closed now.

It's a touchy enough subject as is and if you want to make something mature, it doesn't need to be dark.
