Perhaps if it had been set in Amaranthine or Highever or some other Fereldan city, or if it had been established that the commercial relations between Kirkwall and Ferelden were very substantial, it could be accepted that a lot of Fereldans just happened to stop by there.

I was under the impression Kirkwall was a destination for many Ferelden refugees fleeing the Blight, no? Or are we conveniently forgetting the entire introduction of the game?

I don't care who returns, I just want the option to kill them. And come to think about it, let me kill all the new ones, too.

Although, meeting Teagan again would be nice. Or Alistair. Or Emile de Launcet, just because.

Just as long as Merrill doesn't show up. I'm sure we can get a consensis on that, right? :D
If not, I'll have to take extreme measures.

Killing Merrill is like kicking a puppy.
A cripple puppy.
A cripple puppy with no eyes.

You just don't do it.

I know right? I can't even be mean to her because it feels like I'm just poking a puppy repeatedly in the eyes. XD

Most of the "returning characters" in DA2 could have been exactly the same as their DA2 portrayal, and just had a name/appearance change, and it would have worked. They weren't really "returning characters" anyway. Go back and play DAO, and tell me that DAO's Merrill is in any way the same character as in DA2 other than being an elf mage. I think Bioware just wanted some shallow links to DAO, because a lot of people seem to love meaningless cameos.

And as for the excuse that characters like Anders and Cullen just changed through the years, most writers do that via actual character development throughout a story, not having a character have one personality in one scene and a completely different one the next scene. Something like seeing Anders degrade from the DAA Anders to the DA2 Anders over the course of the game would have been much more effective writing IMO.
