We decided to relaunch our project with a lesser funding goal and a slimmer job scope. We are now focusing on the engine and toolset only and not the Solenttar module. Stop by and have a look...please help spread the word, thanks.

IceBlink Engine + Toolset on Kickstarter

IceBlink is a story, party and turn-based computer RPG Engine and Toolset. Easily create your own adventures to share with anyone.

"This project will develop a Role Playing Game (RPG) 2D engine and toolset as well as a demo adventure game module created with the toolset. The game is inspired by a few of my favorite games; The Bard’s Tale, SSI Gold Box series games, Baldur’s Gate, and Neverwinter Nights (1 and 2). The intent is to create a game engine that results in a virtual table top, Pen and Paper type feel in a single player computer game. The game engine will be free once completed, but the toolset will initially only be available to backers of this Kickstarter project. The toolset will allow anyone to create their own adventures to share with the rest of us. Please help us complete this wonderful project. We really appreciate any support you have to offer. Thanks again!"

Thanks,

Feel free to ignore the idea, but I think you might do better by actually widening your scope, by making a 2d engine adaptable for more than just RPGs.

Think about it, D&D started by modifying the rules to traditional wargames, where instead of each counter representing a whole unit of soldiers, it just represented a single hero. Mathematically, it can all work out the same, whether it's a brigade marching across a field or a party of heroes walking through a dungeon, you just change the rule set and graphics. You can even expand it further by allowing static units--buildings--so as to mimic empire-building games like Civilization or Settlers of Catan.

I just know that I, personally, would like to try to build all sorts of different kinds of strategy and tactical games, but putting together a fresh interface in Java or VB is just beyond my current skill set.

*Random thought, but the AGEOD wargames allow the player to group different units into formations, like army corps organized into an army, with special rules that allow the different units to work together during the opponent's turn. That's not terribly different than a party, so it could be programmed in exactly the same way.
