Prequel seems problematic because Humans didn't really have a full place in the galaxy yet, although it could still be a first contact war game.
Sequel would surely be opening up a can of worms. You'd have to make 2 sets of textures, green and non-green.
What about in between?
It could easily be set, say during the 2 years shepard was dead. That way we could even have cameos from different characters.
Thoughts?
What if ME4 wasn't a sequel or prequel?

No reason why not, but then after the next set of games where do the ones after that head?

Then it'd be a prequel of ME2 and 3.

IMO - it's the only codex and headcanons friendly version. I'd love that, especially if they could take some references from both my ME1 and ME2 saves - not much, just minor cameos to keep sense of "my universe".
But they already used that timeline several times - second novel is relatively short and distant from all the game plot, and there are a lot of gamers which never read ME books. But here comes new "very anticipated" Vega-anime soon. Just let's hope they won't base any games on it.

More like ME2 spin off to me. Concurrent thing. Then it'd be a prequel of ME2 and 3.
