1. Steam was just as bad as Origin when it launched.

And this is the number 1 reason why Origin is crap.

EA had EIGHT YEARS to look at what Steam offered and, if they decided to enter that market space, emulate and expand upon that service to provide a better experience.

Instead, they gave us Beta origin - buggy, broken, featureless, and as bad or worse than Steam was when it released eight years ago.

Agreed.  EA isn't really trying to compete, is the thing.  They are just trying to retain revenue with exclusivity shennanigans.  You can't even screenshot with Origin (one of those simple features you'd think they would have on rollout if they wanted to sweeten the pill, so to speak).

I am beta testing steam for Linux now, and i used it in windows long before EA's Origin existed. I will say this, Valve is doing so much more for us the gaming community. Origin has so far to go before i can consider it half as good. Steam's big picture mode is quite nice and you can really see how it will be great on an HTPC. The fact that Valve brought steam to Linux still amazes me. And the source engine actually works flawlessly. Croteam's serious Sam3bfe plays acceptable too. I hope that steam will help more developers to bring AAA titles to linux as well.

In Summary, EA cares about $ and if it is or becomes profitable we might see ME3 on steam, otherwise prolly not.

Would be great if origin could learn how to deal with my computer going to sleep. It just locks up when it goes to sleep.

Would appreciate steam not having an update every week.

When I started Origin in offline mode and had to go online, it will just stay in offline mode even I'm connected to Internet until I restart Origin.

Uh, be careful what you wish for.  Those updates are fixes and refinements to their product and are a direct result of user requests or in response to users having trouble using Steam.

You might want to be stuck with buggy products for months at a time so they can lump their fixes into bigger but less frequent updates but most sane people appreciate having things fixed as quickly as possible.

If you lost your air conditioner or heater (depending on the season) would you wait until your oven, washing machine, and internet stopped working before you called someone out to fix all the products  because you'd appreciate it if you didn't have have to schedule four individual visits to deal with each problem individually?

Steam might work flawlessly for you and I and many other people but that doesn't mean it works for everyone and believe me the people who don't have a working steam client or game don't want to wait a few weeks for the fix.  Frequent updates are a sign of good customer service even if they are annoyingly frequent (I don't think once a week or two weeks is too frequent personally).

To us Steam, I need to open port in my router. Which I can't. So I'm glad it's not on Steam.
Also, Steam users always got problem need to reinstall Steam and run updates.
I hate online software like these also, but I can play with Origin without doing any router setting and never need to reinstall Origin once.

Origin is really not that bad. I was one of the doubters, but having bought 2 games (DA:O Ultimate and DA2), I can say that it's been an overall smooth experience. All the complaints I see here are just basically due to Steam being around a lot longer than Origin. Steam is definitely more polished and has a truckload of features Origin doesn't have. Given time, I think it'll get better.

I have 50+ games on Steam, and I plan to buy more in the future. Face it, Steam does need some competition.

But if you really think Origin is bad, you haven't experienced GFWL. It's the biggest POS software I have ever seen. I bought Bioshock 2 on a Steam sale (yes, they had to be douches and use this 3rd party crap even on Steam), and guess what: it had to shoehorn in that awful GFWL crap. It would've been OK if it worked, but NOOO it didn't; I couldn't even log in to GFWL. I'd be able to play SP, but I couldn't save my game without logging in to the GFWL service. 2k Games support was just plain non-existent, so I gave up and removed the game from my library.

I've never had to reinstall Steam.  Restart after an update, yes.  But never a complete reinstall due to loss in functionality (7 year user).

Steam is far superior to Origin, Origin is just a skeleton, a tool to bind their playerbase to it and to be competition to Steam.

Origin has a long way to go to be on par with Steam, but i think they will never come even close to steam, Valve has been on field with it for too long.

I had no problem with dao or da2 or me1 or me2 on origin.

But I have big troubles with me3.

There are that "mysterious" dcd from mp, friend list doesn't want to load, I can't send msg to ppl without making them friends, I don't have list of recent players (not every time I remember a name which I'd like to add to my f-list),  I don't know to what ppl i already sended friend request and I don't know if everyone got it and refused or it wasn't worked at all....... and that's not all

But it's not the worst.

I prefere single players games and with dlc im ussually starting new playthrough (with omega dlc it will be forth)
On my last playthrough (leviathan) origin had it's bad day.. or better to say bad week.
I was playing (sp) in one moment and in second moment my screen freezes and then i got msg, that my dlcs can't be authorized.
Alt+tab to windows and origin was in offline mode, checked my connection (was ok), tryed switch origin to on, restarted it and it was still offline..
I wasn't able to continue in my game, i wasn't able to load any save games because "origin wasn't able to authorize my dlcs" and it happend more then only once.

I don't like steam either, but i had no problem with for example fallout new vegas + all dlcs, or authorization in offline mod.

Sorry for too much text and mistakes (english is obviously not my native language)

I had steam disconnection during weekend. Not steam server issue, but instead a router trouble..
Anyways... I was still able to start and play games offline with no problem (borderlands 2 in this case), no restarting needed. It just said where download bar is usually "no connection".
When Origin goes down, ME3 single is also busted since you can't use DLC savegames offline. Last time I did try this was about month ago. For other origin games, I can't say since I don't have anything else than me3 and will not get anything else.

Also, Origin friend list requires restarting 50% of the time since it doesn't connect correctly. It shows that everyone is offline until restart.

Origin sells Saints row the third> Full package for euros 39.99

Steam sells the same game, full package + all dlcs for euros 12,49 first 2 days of sale.

They are so far behind steam in prices, just can not see Origin come close to steam even after 5 years.

the prices are set by the publisher.
which in the case of saints row is THQ.

Yes and no, since publishers and devs are informed about sales and given an ok or not.

But my point is, if Origin is aware that steam has a sale, and is selling the same game for much much less than they are, how do you expect to compete?

EA's servers are not Origin. Though interestingly I very rarely get that specific message. It's another one that always gets me. I actually pointed this out in my original post that spawned this entire conversation. The disconnecting occurs on consoles too... because it's not Origin, it's EA.

Look, I'm not a fan of Origin myself. However, I can at least admit it's only because I'm annoyed with having to use another service. I like having everything in one place. There's nothing massively wrong with the Origin service itself. It actually works surprisingly well considering its relative youth. Steam was massively bugged at launch, far more so than Origin. If you're going to hate on it, at least admit it's for utterly superficial reasons.

Would you mind quoting it for me? Last time I saw this thread was back on Page 3. There's quite a lot of replies!

Lets see...

a) Steam last crashed for me on 2005, origin last crashed on me 2 weeks ago.
B) Steam has working overlay, functioning servers and in-built browser that works- origin has 1 hamsterball that has to be rebooted every 72 hours because of hamster change, horrible browser and ninfunctional rip-off of an overlay.

Steam pushes me the advertisements once i stop playing as "if youd like, this is what we got 99% sale this week (just spent less than 20 euros within a week, got 4 good games)" as in origin stucks me with useless ads the moment i start it.

in Steam i use my money, Euros. I buy to the cent whatever the item costs. To buy ME DLCs in origin, i use retarded imaginary "FU-POINTS" that never add up to the same amount i'd like to spend meaning i have to pay more than the items price.

Origin is a crappy beta copycat of what steam was in 2003.

Steam allows me to add non-steam games and use the overlay on em. i DONT EVEN WANT TO LOOK if i can find the same feature to origin because why the hell would i use origin for that?

The only reason EA doesnt sell their games on steam is because they full well know origin SUCKS BALLS and if their games were on steam, half the playerbase would not use origin.

Oh, and love how you use the screenshot of steam CTD that is from circa 2006- after that they moved into the black-white color scheme and got rid of that green overlay. so thats when someone last time recorded steam CTD message.

Oh, and dont get me STARTED on the horrible localization of origin, even if you turn the thing into "englihs" the store, descriptions and game ads are STILL on the most HORRIBLE localized semi-english-semi-local language. I'd hire my little brother whose no novelist and get three times better translations on EVERYTHING.

kill origin and move to steam, or better, kill EA and sell everything to valve. tho then again, that would mean ME4 to arrive sometimes early 2019..

P.S Valve also released Portal and Portal 2- which are about the only games ever to get appraisal from Yahtzee.

Valve as a company has about as good PR in public as f**king Princess Diana whereas EA is repeatedly getting turded as horrible company that butchers games. Yes, much of it is hype, but still i THINK theres a reason for it.
