Just click here.

That is an answer I can respect.

My only real response is that Steam has been around a lot longer. Of course, you're right, Origin probably won't provide those services eventually.

But let's just take a step back. That makes Origin worse than Steam, something I have never denied, but that wasn't really what I was asking. What I want to know is what makes Origin SO much worse. Have you seen some of the replies? These people seem hate Origin with a passion that your reply cannot explain. This entire thread is a testiment to the irrationality behind this hatred. So far yours is the only reply that comes close to being adequate, and it didn't even come from the person I originally asked the question to!

Origin sucks but EA thinks Origin will be the next Steam. So they doesn't sell ME3 and other stuff on Steam anymore - they want to acquire playerbase to Origin.

Business stuff and you can't do anything.

Yeah pretty obvious there.  Nice touch with Dragan Age Origin name attach to it though.  Got me interested.  All I hear is alot of bad reps about it though.

Steam so far hasn't been a problem.  But I don't know Origin, but I will soon enough.  If it is anything like EA Help, oh boy.

I plan to buy BF3 from Origin and ME3 PC as well.  Or I'll just get the retail version.

basicaly you want steam to have monopoly over the digital market. which nobody should every ask for.

edit: fix quotes.

I don't mind Steam being the primary distribution and social platform for PC gaming. That would enable me to keep all my crap (friends lists, games, achievements etc) in one place, on reliable servers, in a polished and completely functional client. I don't like having to split everything off across three separate services, and since Steam is the best of the three...

That's one of the benefits of consoles, by the way: unification. PSN and XBL hold total monopoly over their respective platforms, but nobody cares, because they work, they're the default, they're unified, and they have fairly impartial rules about developing for them. Steam has the potential to do that for PC, but with crap like Origin taking exclusivity for major games, the player base is going to be fragmented, and the different clients will interfere with each other.

EA's servers are not Origin. Though interestingly I very rarely get that specific message. It's another one that always gets me. I actually pointed this out in my original post that spawned this entire conversation. The disconnecting occurs on consoles too... because it's not Origin, it's EA.

Origin is an EA service, an EA program, run by EA and connecting to EA's servers. Origin's servers ARE EA's servers. The specific problem with the way Origin works is that it MUST be running AND connected, for any EA program that incorporates it.

Origin seems to use TCP and is very sensitive to lost data packets. As a result, it is not very fault-tolerant and exits when it feels it's been disconnected for even a few milliseconds.

Which promptly takes every other EA game it is tied to with it.

A second issue is that Mass Effect 3, Battlefield *, and other EA games with online components, ALSO have a separate set of game servers run by EA that they have to access and connect to.

This makes Origin-linked games unreliable to play.

Why is Steam better than Origin?  Are you looking for personal reasons or more objective reasons?

Here is kinda my bottom line: EA has done everything to alienate consumers whereas Valve has done the opposite (consistantly, over a span of many years) and garnered tons and tons of goodwill.

When you hear the term "matchmaking" do you immediately cringe?  I kinda do.  To me that's a consolized version of multiplayer but hey, PC porting is hard (or something) and we PC gamers should feel lucky that EA even bothers with our platform.  Whereas with Valve games, many of them still have dedicated servers up and running.  Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2.  Other developer's games also have dedicated servers running that take advantage of Steamworks.  Steam also provides a lot of SDK and free tools so that consumers themselves can set up their own dedicated servers for various games.  Steam also begs you to mod their games.  I mean really.  The modding community is insane and it's so simple to mount mods onto Valve games, you just plop the EXE into the Sourcemods directory.  Poof.  This is all becoming even more streamlined with the Steam Workshop and mods (and mods turned full games) are getting more exposure via (albeit newly implemented) Greenlight system.  Does Origin have ANY of this?  No.  Will they ever have programs or systems implented to compete on such a scale?  No.  Why would they?  They don't even want people to mod their games as it is.  Steam also runs on MAC and has a mobile app which Origin is only just now getting around to (I don't really fault them here, but it is something Steam has over Origin).  While Origin is only just figuring out MAC, Valve is moving on to broadening Steam's Linux compatibility (it's in beta right now).  Steam boasts 2000 titles available for digital download and when I check Origin under "PC" I get a list that tops out at 306.  Alrighty then.

I haven't even mentioned the Steam sales, no need to.  Does Steam have some annoying quirks?  Of course.  Is it still technically DRM?  Yes.  I'm not saying it's perfect by any means but I do think that Origin is manifestly inferior and likely will remain so.

another reason why steam is better than origin...
just received an origin update, and it broke down. Just like after every origin update. For some reason it seems to lose it's exe file after update. No idea why, but so far I can confirm 4 people having the exact same issue.
With steam, updates have been working correctly.
