Well, the idea is that we wouldn't be broken up.Sharn01 wrote...
I never understood how someone could spend a game romancing a character they really like, and then hope they immediately break up with the character they just finished playing so they can make a solo appearance in the next game.

I supposse it comes down to if she still cares. In my playthrough the last thing she said about the subject was that she was done living for her clan, so...
Does this depend on if you friended or rivaled her? I recall that in my playthrough (I rivalled her) that she was filled with remorse about the death of her clan and told Sebastian she would have to find redemption in my final [mood off-putting] companion banter in lowtown before heading to the docks.

Yes, in the friendship path the situation is different.

Three minutes is enough to give me good reasons of why I think Merril should be romanceable companions in DA 2 in the first place. I like those qualities that are no longer appear with the new Merril.
....
Alistair's appear too brief to comment.
Care to explain? A cameo of a barley developed character is somehow superior to a fleshed out companion. Yet you have no comment on Alistair's cameo?
It doesn't matter if you like a character or no. I never really much liked Anders, but I could tell his development was sensible. I never cared for Half-Life as a game, but I know it's a good game. The subjective (whether you like the personality) and the objective (whether that character is well written/developed) are two different things. An NPC that barley spoke cannot compare to an NPC that was there through-out three acts of (well, for me) a 55 hour game.

I agree.
I have nothing against Merril, but supposedly these games are only related in that they are in the same world/continent. Why would an awkward elf chick be part of this next story, and if she was, why would she coincidentally be part of this new characters party.
If you side with the Templars she goes with the mages (in the rival path iirc.) You can kill her then.

She goes with the mages in the case you sided with the templar if you don't have full frienship or full rivarly.

No, she is an egocentric, self-serving, reckless idiot. Merrill is the consummate fool throughout DA:2's plot.

If she returns, we need the option to give her head slaps, like Gibbs in NCIS, when she starts to talk nonsense.

For the same reason that Isabela & Anders were awkwardly jammed into DA2 dispite it contradicting the established timeline in Anders case, and for the same reason Isabela and Varic are in the comic series.I agree.

My intial response was about my fear of returning former characters due to personality change done by BioWare. And someone disgree with my assessment by giving examples like Leliana, Zevran, Isabela and Alistair. My reply was, I couldn't comment on whether Alistair undergo radical personality changes in DA 2 as with Merril or Anders, simply because he appear too brief and spoke very few lines ( in DA 2 ) to make any evalution on his personality.simfamSP wrote...

And you have completely miss the point. That's not what my response ( with regard to Alistair ) is about.simfamSP wrote...

Except her personality doesn't change in the context of how we interacted with her in Origins. It remains consistent.
TEWR wrote...
She's exactly the same as she was in DAO, considering that all of the interactions we had with Merrill in DAO was with her clan.
In both games, she's confident around her clan members. When Paivel says to her in DAII "For someone so intent on leaving, you're sticking around an awful lot" you know what her response is?
"Don't get your knickers in a twist Hahren, I'll be leaving soon enough."
She maintains that confident and bossy persona to Ilen and Marethari as well. When the former asks her how the Alienage is, she gives him a confident sarcastic remark about it being sunshines and rainbows. When she knows Hawke is on her side, she tells Marethari about what she wants to do. And when she finds out Marethari spread slanderous lies about her to the clan, she gets fairly livid.
When you take her outside the clan to a world she's never interacted with, then she's going to deal with culture shock. She's never dealt with humans -- Duncan being an exception, though one could argue his being a Warden makes race irrelevant -- or City Elves, so she's unsure of how to best act amongst them.
And as time progressed, she became more and more accustomed to her new environment.
Sacred_Fantasy wrote...
Merril in DAO know the danger of ancient ruin and would not go against the first keeper with regard to the mirror shard. Merril in DA 2 has no regard for anyone else safety with her blood magic and naively think the mirror shard should be protected, completely disregard the fact that it turn Tamlen into a zombie.
IIRC, Merrill said she was interested in the ruins in DAO.
And no, the shard didn't turn Tamlen into a ghoul. That was the Taint, which has been cleansed from the shard by virtue of Merrill using blood magic to amplify the healing magic Marethari taught her -- which in DAO was established as being able to fight the Taint in its unamplified state.

Narratively, you'd expect Merrill to return if the eluvians are going to play a major role in the future. Which you'd expect them to do, really.
But since she's killable - even if it seems hardly anyone ends up doing so - any future role will likely be limited.
They could always sub it out Tali Zorah/Admiral Raan style.

Please, no Merril and NO Tallis. Merril's personality just didn't fit any of my playthroughs at all. And Tallis is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I only play the DLC for the change of pace and a chance to see my sibling again, I wish I could kick Tallis out of the group.
Tallis was awful. That entire DLC was bad because of her. Super lame fan fiction type thing only redeemed by some boss fights and humour that came from the other characters involved.

I would expect her to be a kind of elf Batman, the silent guardian and watchful protector of the same people who cast her out.
*TEWR approves*
Because she's the hero Thedas deserves, but not the one it needs right now...
