So I have been going through the Codex on magic and religion and I have noticed that only the members of Circle of Magi are ever referred as "magi", whereas "mages" is used to refer to both Circle members and other magically gifted individuals. And I have been wondering: is "magi" a term that specifically applies to the Circle mages, just like "magisters" applies only to Tevinter ruling class mages and "apostates", to mages who should be in the Circle by law but are not?

I don't know officially. I have always taken the two terms as interchangeable, with 'magi' being the more formal term. At a guess I'd say you'd hear 'magi' more often from academics.

The way I look at it, magi means an organization of mages (i.e. The circle of magi) while mages is simply the plural of mage.

I always assumed that "Magi" was the term when referring to magic-users as a collective, as opposed to simply a group of mages. For example, you'd say "those three mages over in the corner", but you'd also say "Magi are regarded with fear and distrust by common folk".

That would be my interpretation, too...

I would agree if not for the fact that magic-users are not a single collective, but several societies (the Circle, the Mages Collective of Ferelden, the Tevinter Magisters, even the various fraternities within the Circle, etc.).

Magi is used when it is formal or Like the circle of Magi, when it's an organization. You don't go walking into many towns where the people are running about and screaming, "We're under attack by the blood magi!" So it's still a pretty open topic. But you would still use Mages in almost every case. People like First enchanter Orisono and Irving would still use the word mages. Others would as well.

It's like the word 'moose'. What is the plural? Is it mooses? Meese? What about moosen? We may never know...

Mage is singular
Magi is plural
Those that say Mages are in the wrong.
