Considering the inability, errors, and misuse of sim projects here on this planet, I am not so keen on this notion. Pass.

Maybe if UPS or Fedex delivers there. Maybe if I can get internet access, because I can't live without netflix. Yeah I don't think so. 500k is half the Government worth of a single individual (or one of a couple) in the U.S.A. so I don't know if that is too much, but I'm certainly not paying for it. hehe

Sure I don't mind if I can never return to the Earth. I just demand to fly either the Chinese or Soviet Flag on Mars, Red Planet after all.

Even if it were possible, why? The Earth is a living, breathing planet, with countless beautiful landscapes and landmarks, cities and many amazing natural wonders to experience. The Earth is without a doubt the greatest wonder of our solar system, a planet that has raised us humans as a species, amongst billions of other species. A planet with so much diversity, and so much life, perfect for our civilizations. Humans belong here.

Mars is a cold, dead rock. Why would anyone want to live there in some claustrophobic compund for the rest of the life? For research and scientific study for awhile sure, that makes sense, but I would never curse anyone to endure their entire life in such a bleak, desolate, and lifeless desert. Hell, you wouldn't even be able to breath fresh air for the rest of your life, of feel the light spring breeze. That alone would drive me mad after awhile.

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't want to live on a huge, cold, bare rock for the rest of my life.  There are not even cats... or birds... or trees... or oceans. Awesome as it is that NASA has managed to land a robot on Mars, I wouldn't want to live there.
Better to spend all that money on saving this planet from pollution, etc.

Wow, going to Mars to start a colony with no guarantee of ever being able to return to Earth? Even provided that it doesnt screw up royally that is one huge sacrifice.

If there are people willing to pay to go there, more power to them, but I wouldn't be counted among them.

And that is why it should be done.

The earth is a one hit wonder in our region. Mars and some of Jupiters Moons are the only other homes we may have. It may take time, money and effort, but space can be made home it can be liveable.

Earth? Lets face it, between wars, pollution and cosmic events...its our home, but theres a bomb in the basement and time is ticking away. Eventually all Children must grow wings and leave home. Besides Earth could do with some time to mend.

Huge Tracts of Israel used to be nothing but wasteland. Over time and with effort and hard work, flowers now bloom. The New World took great effort and time to be what it is.

Our resources are drying up, our people are devided, and varrying idealougies are nearing one anothers throats. Weapons more gastly than those of the cold war are being built, and the threat of MAD thanks to new defenses has largely been cast aside. With each year large chuncks of Rock swing in closer and closer ensuring we are the next great extinction. The sun conspires to wreck our technology, cosmic radiation drifts on a whim, our own ecosystem through events we can't stop or control may turn on us..it may not be this year, or even 100, but our small blue world is sick and dying.

And because of a new home and the fact it might be hard work, because it might be cold, you wish to stay? You will take what you know in place of what you can hope to have? A lie no matter how comforatable is still picked over a truth no matter how harsh? It is thinking like this that will doom the human race. The people of Pompeii,  Saint-Pierre, Caslte Rock, Tunguska, Berlin 1945, New York City 9/11 paid the price for this, as have many others when you try to pretend you are god and there will always be a tomorrow.

Time and time again have humans pretended to be masters of fate, and that everything will be fine. But its often not and the price paid is death. And that is the final ultimate price. And if humans such as yourselves can't see this, and arn't willing to face hardships and keep looking forward while ignoring the hellfire behind you, then maybe our species should be wiped clean. So that its ignorant rot won't be left to spread.

Space is our future. Be it the red planet, be it a huge round dome in space. Like it or not. The alternative is death. And you worry about tree's plants? Art? Home? Listen to yourselves. Where did the Tree's come from? They were seeds once, planted by chance or by man. The Animals and plants we consume today? Cared for by tiring hands. The Art? Drawn and created by those who often struggled and starved and were troubled. Your home?

Is it not empty and cold when your first move in? Is it truely the dwelling that matters? Or the heart, soul and tears that are put into it? The memories we build with in, those who we come to love, the hate the sorrow, and all of these things. Would you allow them all to end as you are not willing to face a hard truth? The problems man face are beyond our ability to fix. We can only move on and hope one day our race of ignorant savages can survive. Must of you only want stagnation and the comforts of life..you do not wish death, you don't with to let you candles go out in the beauty of a blaze. For only in living to our fullest can such a blaze happen. Only in paving the way of tomorrow. Stagnation is the ultimate and final death.

Would I go into space if it only ment a cold death so that others will build on the ground work I've laid? Your Damn right I would I would die a million deaths and let my corpse be built on a billion times if it ment we could go on. If it ment a new home for not just my children, but all children and for the hopes we won't keep screwing up everything around us. For that is what I value most in life. Is to serve.

There are a million things that can happen on a given day to wipe out you, your homes, your art, your trees, and your history. And we can't stop one of them. At least through hard work and scarfice beauty and aspirations can be held. And we can cast out more lottery tickets in hopes that at least one will make it.

So yeah send me into space. If I never see the Earth again, thats fine. I will lay down the foundations, running boards, roofs, till the soil, bring water to the planes and lay seeds into the World. So that a new home may be born. So that others may escape the hell of this world. Remember while you have this PC and likely good clothes and the arts you enjoy, others have it far worse. And so long as we are limited to this one world, all you do is make sure we all die.

Tempting, but no. I've still got a pretty huge percentage of *this* planet to visit before I'd even consider it.

Maybe after I win Powerball tonight, and get a chance to visit every.place.on.Earth. Posted Image

We should definitely colonise Mars. The long term survival of our species will be much more secure by settling others worlds. Going by our history it seems natural as well.
The technological advancement for the rest of humanity would be significant. At worst the benefits would be tremendous, at best it would be a technological revolution.

OP's questions.

Sign up? I cannot deny that a part of me would like to.

Chance of success: I put more stock in NASA, ESA, Roscosmos and Space-X than Mars One. But we'll se how it goes. Mars One seems to have the intellectual "know-how" but they have yet to show the practical.

Mars is a ball of dust with a weak gravitational field. Mars is not a good place for growing kids. I will consider other planets when NASA develops a safe warp drive.

^ Didn't the 'Merican government take most of NASA's funding away some time back? Last I remember they had to do things like baking drives and other local town events just to shore up enough money for a project.

Honestly, better we start work colonising areas outside of Earth now rather than later, as things seem to just be getting steadily worse lately as time goes by on this rock. And I'm an optimist.

I predict it will all start great at first, but then contact will be lost and the next wave of colonists returns to find that everybody has become mutants or something. And it will make for a great movie.

Anyone that wants to count on NASA or the US government to do crap obviously hasn't seen the new age you'll get to live too.

50.

Anyways as to the project I've been keeping up with it and plan to sign on, but doubt I'll be one of the first batch.

The stated goals are 4 people every two years for a set amount of time then getting the bases up and running, resource finding, limited biodome developement, etc.

Now things that may turn some people off. Given it IS a private company doing this dependant on funds (at least untill other companies or the Russians and Chinese decide to go up, face it folks the west is toast) the astronauts in transit will be on something like a 24 hour TV program. Given its a colonization mission its one way, with a massive build up as the years go on. So a one way trip.

You won't be going back to earth. Your whole purpose is to aid in the construction of habitats and research. Plus once the first constructions are down breeding attempts will be made, provided things go well enough and the first waves do well enough with larger backing a 100 year process of colonization and terraforming plus resource mining will be undertaken.

Its a long term program, and they don't really want military personal only so much as colonist of varrying skill sets. Actully thats not too important either given you'll be placed in a 7 year training program. Also part of the reason its private is they don't want governmental control, its also why all nationals are allowed to take part, so no one government can lay claim.

Communication will be possible with the earth, but short of data dumps and back logs, live communications can only be in bits and with a 7 minute delay. Also when you die on mars your body will be cremated, but your death is likely not to matter given they stated goal of forming a stable growing population.

Also the issues of the gravitational field can be solved or at least contained. It means staying in a dome, or wearing a spacesuit outside at all times however. But provided it goes to plan in 100 years or so the planet should be a garden world more in line with the US Southwest.

Some it up, you won't be going back. Its not for uncle sam,and you will basically be the builders for what will eventually be the first native martians. haha I can't wait to see how the UN reacts to that. Part of why we don't do anything with space now is governments fear having some of there tax sources running off.

Yes. Project Constellation was cancelled 2 or 3 years ago, the Space Shuttle program was canceled a year ago, and NASA lost much funding. NASA's situation is relatively sad now. The good news is NASA is still developing FTL technology. They recently reduced the amount of energy required to a feasible amount, but they still have to figure out how not to obliterate the destination.

Theoretical. That means they don't have a drive, or working plans. Nothing. At best it will be a spread sheet the US will sell to China in a few years.

I can say I have the plans to build a deathstar. That doesn't mean I can, or that it will even work. Its like early airplane designs, whats "theoretical" doesn't work till its actully been tested. And testing takes money. Ah well it seems nasa is content to let Space-X and the like carry the torch.
