Companies that wait 3 or 4 months before producing a good DLC are far less likely for me to buy it as I have already played the game to death. I will sometimes wait a year before buying it when I feel like playing the game again.
No, I am not one of those people who believe day 1 DLC just "should" have been in the game. No more than I beleive that a car "should" already come with leather seats. If you want a better experience, then you pay a little bit more for it upfront.

Lol. Car with leather seats? Good luck driving anywhere riding a video game.Navasha wrote...
I hope it does. I like to have the DLC in the game ASAP so that I can actually enjoy it along with my very first experience.

Correct comparison is buying an ebook on release day and then discovering there is already another chapter of the story available online,for additional cost.

Is Dragon Age III: Inquisition going to ship with Day One DLC?
I used to work for a DVD rental shop who would often try to increase profits by offering the main product at full price, with the offer that if you buy it, you get something else at a reduced price.
Ultimately this resulted in lower overall profit as the item reduced in price was not sold at it's RRP. However, the offset was that, on release, the main product shipped more items. And if the reduced price product was a product we had trouble selling, then we increased the chances of getting it out of the store to free up shelf space and giving us room to get something in we could sell at a profit etc etc.....
Day 1 DLC , seems to me, to be following this trend, but there's a problem.
Either the software is ready or it isn't on release day. And if it is ready.......... why on Earth isn't it bundled with the main product?
The software is not two seperate products. It's one product. Having Day 1 DLC to raise profits by putting a conceptual artificial seperator line between the software ready for release at the same time as the other smacks of opportunism.
Levi and Omega are exceptions in that it took months of work to prepare the DLC for release. Therefore it could not have been released at benchmark quality.

This has been talked about before. Basically, the content in the day 1 DLCs would not have been greenlit without the extra funding required to make it happen.Redbelle wrote...

A dramatisation of the DLC greenlighting process, as imagined by yours truly;
BW: Hey, we'd like some more money.
EA: So does every developer, but it's not like our pockets are limitless. Please, make your case.
BW: Well we had this awesome character, but as it stands now we'd have to either cut them or release them months after release like we did with Kasumi. We'd prefer if people could enjoy the game with them in it, since the script was written with their inclusion in mind.
EA: Yeah, I see your point. Tell you what, if we sell this as a separate component, I'll give you more money so you can put more guys at work on it. More content for the consumers, you get to make the game closer to what you want it to be, and we make more money as well. Everybody wins!
BW: Thanks, EA! You're the best!
This is the same meeting without day 1 DLC being an option, as imagined by yours truly;

EA: Yeah, I see your point. Tough position, but we can't spend more money on this project. We're already funding millions. Maybe you could make the character DLC in the future?
BW: Yeah, maybe. We'll see what happens I guess...

That is how I look at Day 1 DLC. I think the big disconnect is how much downtime there is after the game is sent off for certification and printing. Honestly if there wasn't Day 1 DLC there probably wouldn't be a team left for people would be moved to different projects or their contract would be terminated, for they don't want to have people sitting around for months because the community doesn't like Day 1 DLC.
The content that is released on Day 1 DLC would be cut even if DLC didn't exist, it just wouldn't be available at all.
As far as expansions go, DLC is the new format for them, taking a year to release new game content reduces the amount of people that will buy it, for interest in the game dies down almost instantly so getting new content out and available as soon as possible to make more sales.

I don't mind its stupid that people complain. It's not like its a new tactic that businesses have suddenly introduced to advertising and selling a product.
Just because it's not a "new tactic" doesn't make it right.
I still remember buying complete games on release.

As somebody who has bought most of these CEs while living on welfare checks (so glad that period's finally over~), let me tell you it's just a matter of economical priorities!
Not eating for four days to play ME2 on launch day was so worth it. I still get the taste of coffee in my mouth every time I play the suicide mission from all the coffee I had during my initial playthrough - 'twas the only thing I had at home when I slammed the disc in the tray
I'm...not sure what to say to this...

Thank you for clearing that up. Then let me add this; DLC character Shale was awesome! Sebastian not so much.
If you give us someone with a romance option let it be a proper one. Sebastian doesn't even give you a peck on your cheek.

So your saying that when a product comes out on the shelves no matter what it is and has a deluxe edition version with more content in it for you to buy you will complain because they should just package everything together? No this is how business's work no matter what the product or industry is, you pay for the content your given. And those 'complete' games you mention were during times when the distribution channels were nearly not as wide as they are now. It's not like companies weren't bringing our revisions with extra content in those days anyway focing gamers to shell out another lump of money for the same game plus abit... remember Street Fghter 2 and all the revisions?
