OK, I just simply can't decide here.. getting a new game off the ground and I can't decide on my 4th party member.

What I've decided on so far:
MC: Dwarf Noble tank, Warrior/Templar/Champion speccing in sword & board.
Leliana: Archer, Rogue/Bard/Ranger... if I simply can't stand archery I'll replace with Zev:
Wynne: Healer/Support, Mage/Spirit Healer/???? I simply can't think of a specialization that fits with SH.

Now for my final slot I need some more melle omph... but I can't decide what to take... I think I can use the console to force acquireing Shale since the module is installed and running but the quest won't show, I'm a little bit hesitant to spend time in this though since I don't know how well it'll behave in-game after forcing the issue like that.

y second option is the Hound, pretty good damage and some nice abilities, esp. against casters... but can't get stat bonuses since loyalty is maxed anyway.

Last option is Sten.. massive armor and berzerker training and you've got a Qunari wrecking ball... although I always seem to have trouble getting along with him, find it almost impossible to get his loyalty up even enough for him to open up a bit letalone get any bonuses.

Out of those options I would honestly take JD ("Just Dog" :) ). Overwhelm is amazing, and he also has an AoE stun.

You could also bring Morrigan for magey goodness. If you can stand her whining about all the choices you make :)

As for your question about Wynne, you can always get Blood Mage. You don't have to put points in it, just for the passive spellpower boost. I also got a little tired of her whining about blood magic and found it a suitable punishment.

i think shale would be the best option, the golem has a ton of health and deals a ton of damage and is capable of taking on most bosses alone. i often have a PC mage, with Leliana as a rogue(ranger/bard), Shale as the main tank and alistair(templar/champion) supporting him

overwhelm might be good, but shale cannot be grabbed or overwhelmed so shale can be practically indestructible

+ you cant replace Leliana, shes too cute lol

Out of those 3, I'd take the dog. I'd drop him for Oghren or Zhevran eventually though.

For Wynne, SH/AW is amazing. At least it was when my MC was SH/AW.

I'd take Shale or Dog. My preference is Dog--just pumping strength into him and letting him run wild. Shale is nice, too, though. I used him for damage on my last playthrough alongside my two-handed weapon warrior and I'm pretty sure he was dropping bigger numbers than I was.

Shale's awesome. I use him in Stone Aura mode though since I have a separate tank. Then when he runs out of stamina, I'd just switch him to attack mode.

Sten would be hasted if you don't get haste for Wynne, if you do get haste, then Sten could be great.

Shale would be awesome for some DPS plus tanking (especially against dragons since she can't be eaten).

But overall, my pick would be Dog. Overwhelm, shred, charge, and aoe stun are amazing stuff. Get Nemesis and he is simply dangerous. Plus cute! You can pet him mid dungeon and watch him roll around in the dirt! What better way to get your mind off of pending death?

Sten is the best warrior you get... alistair is close, but oghren and shale just suck towards him. Ok, he can't get the second specialization but he has far better stats than your other companions because he is a qunari.

You also pick him up very early in the game so you can decide where to spend his points and you don't get screwed seeing that the developers spent 10-15 points in willpower like with Oghren and Loghain.

The Dog is good against almost any boss except the dragons.

Dread howl has a short cooldown. and can repeat stun several times in the course of a long battle.

Charge = Pommel Strike = Shield Bash

Shred = Critical Blow = Assault

Overwhelm - no equal.

Plus with nemesis and mabari dominance - just let him loose against any Red spellcaster and standback and watch the fun.

I even took him all the way to the Archdemon - and while he was excellent up to the roof of Fort Drakon - he would try to overwhelm the archdemon and died quite quickly.

I pump his strength and dex and he is a killing machine.

Plus - he never disapproves of anything you do.

Shale is OP if you use all of her modes correctly. The cooldowns aren't shared, so you can quickly chain a thrown boulder, Bellow, Quake, then go to Stone Aura for a huge party buff. She is also the best tank in the game, by far, with Taunt + Threaten + maxed Stoneheart chain. Golem immunity to Overwhelm and grab attacks is an "I Win" button versus many boss encounters.  As a side bonus, she is immune to Blood Magic, and her extremely high innate Physical Resistance makes it very unusual for Crushing Prison, Paralyze, and similar spells to stick.

Her crystals are upgradeable at merchants, as well, and the higher levels of them give her some nice buffs.

Shale is great. Sten as a berserker in heavy armor (not massive) is also very good. This helps him with fatigue, and helps prevent him breaking your aggro.

I generally give Wynne Arcane Warrior as her second specialisation, and set her up to pound the living daylights outta stuff.

Shale is pretty powerful indeed. But if you played her already to death, I think my suggestion would go to Dog. Hehe, I might try to make Wynn Arcane Warrior as well Susan (and put some dedication in it this time) and make hear beat the stuffing out of mobs as well. Sounds like fun !

DW warrior, Sten 2H, shale weaving her abilites, and Liliana with some ranged. had no problems really at all, and bosses dropped very quickly. any of the characters had enough health to live through being eaten on a dragon, then just pop a potion and keep going.

With shale you have huge options and so it is Shale all the way
She could Off tank better than the other 2
She can reach into DPS better than the dog but not nearly as close as Sten though her resilience is far superior. Immune to some element or the other with the mode and armor chosen.

can do Spiritual damage :)

Take Morrigan and Zevran in replacement of Leliana
