It's bloody obvious that most players will go with the "helpless and oppressed" mages, this thread serves little purpose.
Why am I now imagining a Mage and a Templar Knight-Commander enacting a parody of the peasant scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

BioWare, now is the time to listen to your fans, more than ever. For the love of Jeebus, MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

Templars.
But I sided with the Mages in DA 2 because the ones in Kirkwall were kind of crazy. Some of the mages were, too, but I have a difficult time with killing a mass amount of innocent people because Meredith says so and one is a terrorist.

Mage, but I'm sure Bioware will make the mages do something unspeakably horrible with them to make me meta-game and go along with Meredith's insanity.

I side with mages and did not kill Anders.
Personally, I don't see why people do unless they just think it's fun or your a templar-supporter . He didn't deserve to die. That change needed to happen, mages were being oppressed and mistreated by the chantry for hundreds of years. Imprisoning them, most never see their families again. Tell me how that's fair. Just because they have magic is not justification. Templars are very powerful warriors with big swords with a lyrium craving. They could easily be serial killers, why not lock them up? Or the Grey Wardens? The can do almost anything they want with the skill to back it up. The circles are a broken system. Anders saw this and acted.
(sorry dis was so long)
he could have warned me first.

I'm on the side of whoever has the most attractive characters.
On a serious note, both sides have their bullcrap going on. I mean, the Mages have people like Anders, who commit mass murder to the innocent to prove a point.. and the Templars have people who ****** over dictatorship. There is a reason for both sides. Mages are dangerous, yes. They are really damned dangerous and have a murder knife strapped to them 24/7, where as Templars mistreat the mages. Not as badly as the Qunari, but still badly.
I'll probably just get out the popcorn and watch them both kill eachother, actually. Yeahhh.

Through out 2 my hawk was a family man so he kinda had to be more mage friendly with bethany being a mage and all.
My character in 3 will be more middel ground and hopely able to aviod ending one side maybe whack the nuts on both sides.

My Hawke mage sided with the templars simply because I liked Meredith, and the power she wielded (not at the end fight, but as a whole during the story). So again I'd probably side with the templars, but we'll see how the story goes. I really just go with whatever party has a more favourable leader to me.

It depends on how they are presented in the game.
I think both sides have some legitimate arguments in their favor. On the one hand the persecution of anyone with magical ability by the Chantry and Templars is unjust, on the other hand oppressed mages always turning to blood magic and becoming abominations isn't exactly a compelling argument for letting them off the leash. And the atrocities committed by both the new and old Tevinter Imperium doesn't inspire much confidence in free mages playing nice with their non-mage neighbors.
All of that being said, the Templars in DA2 were mostly presented as LOL EVIL.
The whole mage/templar choice might be a hard one for me if both sides are presented with both good and bad points, but not if it follows the DA2 model and presents one side as being more villainous than the other.
