If by 'change design' you mean 'not have them in the game?'

Yes.

1) Darkspawn never looked cool or scary.
2) Mindless hordes of evil are not compelling. Darkspawn are about as interesting as the random goblins you have to fight in DnD when you travel.
3) Though if you replaced them with smurfs who worship Orcus like H4IC did, that would be more interesting.

Completely agree. The best change to Darkspawn would be not to have them in game at all. So tired of them and not having them around means we don't have to wonder why our characters or companions never seem to catch the taint.

I'll make a singular exception for 'The Messenger' from Awakening. It would be fun to see him come back playing Batman and rescuing travellers in distress.

^ What Jack said. Darkspawn/Derpspawn are kinda old news.

Surely there are other, more worthy, opponents?

I do not like the redesign for the Darkspawn or the Elves in DA 2 sadly.

As someone else said the Darkspawn just looked clownish and amusing. Not scary or intimidating. There was a reason they called the ClownSpawn after all.

And then in the Legacy DLC they made it ten times worse by introducing the DonkeyKongSpawn as well, all they needed was the barrels and the comical image would have been completed.

Its horrific.

And the Elves. Eugh. Just Eugh.

The entire race went from looking attractive if a little generic to looking like they all had Downs Syndrome. The entire race. En Masse.

I get what they were going for. A more exotic look and everything. But every elf outside of Fenris and Merill looked hideous. And I am on the fence with Fenris and Merill.

Honestly, I would like the darkspawn to keep their DA2 design but with their razor sharp teeth back.

I truly hate the DA2 darkspawn aesthetic. Almost as much as I hate the new elf look. The qunari redesign, however, was reasonably good IMO.

old darkspawn.

I felt like old darkspawn had good uniforms because it looked like a bunch of crap they found on the ground

DA 2 Darkspawn are at the top of my list; followed by Flemeth (too much of a Power Rangers villian vibe). Elves are annoying but tolerable; Merrill and Fenris do help aliviate some of the pain.

Qunari though are IMO very well done, perfect visual appearece to match the lore of the Qun.

Visual astectics clashing with background lore is what irks me the most about the DA 2 design. Like I said earlier; when you have lore stating that Darkspawn are "born" of Broodmothers; who are created by the Darkspawn forcing women to eat flesh of their kin and by raping them repeatedly; but have the monsters look more groomed than the PC or his/her party it creates a disconnect and I can't take the Darkspawn seriously.

So what if the look in DA:O was generic (I don't think it was)? At least their appearance matched their backstory.

I'm sure they will change the design of the Dark Spawn, it's a new engine after all with better graphics capability.

I trust them to make them intreasting.

If they're going to keep being in the games i would prefer some change from the DA2 ones. They look just.. boring.

Both versions work for me, so I am easy to please in this matter. I look forward to see how the darkspawn and elves will look in DA3. Considering all the criticism, I expect they will try to do something in between DAO and DA2. But they may surprise us with something completely different.

Once again the BSN is divided on the issue. I will wait and see what the creative minds of Bioware come up with using the new engine.

I'd rather just keep a consistent design at this point. I never found the darkspawn particularly frightening in appearance; it was more the implications of their existence, plus their utter brutality, that made them threatening.

Yes, I'd love them to change the design. I mean I know they had to change them a little for the new art style in DA2, but they looked completely ridiculous to me imho.

I would like them to update them, not neccessarily change them. I'd like more diversity in the darkspawn ranks, even more than DA:O. However it's doubtfull the darkspawn will be a major part of the game. With only two old gods remaining the darkspawns don't look so threatening anymore. It's like a bankrobber with only two bullets in his gun: yeah, it's scary, sure. but once those bullets are gone his just a guy holding a paperweight. I predict the eventual rise of the "smartspawns", that without domination by archdemons will develop an intricate society, followed by politics, and finaly be castrated by bearucracy. The DS will become no greater threats than the qunari. eventually they will begin trading with upworlders and will have to sign an eventual cease fire/peace treaty with the dwarves followed by withdrawel from 22% of occupied thaigs, while demanding that darkspawns that were born in the thaigs will be allowed to remain as dwarven citizens. these will create a new subcaste in dwarven society that will probably be even lower than commoners, thus elevating the commoners to middle class. this will provide a new cultural and ecomonomical boom to dwarven civilization, offset by the orzammar/kal-shrok civil war.

What they did to the darkspawn in DA2 motivated me to retexture them, because at the start of the game, I felt more like I was fleeing midieval undead mimes than I felt like I was fleeing darkspawn.

It would be nice if they improved them somehow.  But I suspect that, IF, I get DA3 I will likely have to do it again.

Wow this is amazing and definately what I was referring to, having more of an undead design with skin flaking off and visible wounds punctures. Exactly what they needed to make them look less claean and why I endorse this over the DAO design.

If the darkspawn do comeback in dragon age 3, I would like the Architect to come back along with the Anders that didn't act all emo like.

I really don't care about what the stuff I mindlessly kill during a game looks like, be they darkspawn, bandits or random creatures.

I only care that my PC and her entourage look awesome as they slaughter them.

The Hurlocks in DA2 looked like undead, not tainted humans, though I think I like the Genlocks in the Legacy expansion better than the genlocks in DA:O.

As mentioned before, the Darkspawn in Origins do look more similar to their (taint free) counterparts.
Also the creepy grin that Hurlocks had was almost as if they were trying to get in your head.
Psychological deterrent.

Funny, I thought the opposite. DA2 darkspawn have more physical resemblance to their original race (except genlocks but that's IMO debatable depending on what you focus on). The way they act might make them seem less 'human,' ie they wear ridiculous armor and run around like monkeys.
