Forgot about NWN1 and NWN2, which are definitively up there with my other favorites. If I had to choose though, I'd go with Obsidian's NWN2. In any event, the point being is that Bioware knows how to make a great CRPG and has dominated the genre over the past 15 years. I just hope they get back to basics with DA3 instead of offering a watered-down product called "Mass Appeal."

I have faith it'll kick butt.
I happen to like DA2 more than DAO in some respects, so I never really lost any faith. There's so much to look forward to in this world, and DAO barely scratched the surface of it's most interesting dynamic like DA2 did (Mage/Templars). Unapologetic fan here.

I seriously see PE becoming a flop. People are having so much hopes for it that perhaps they're going a little overboard? Maybe that's why Obsidian are releasing updates often so that people DON'T get the wrong idea.
If it were any other studio maybe but Obsidian has only made one game I don't care for and it's Dungeon Siege III.
Have you noticed that obsidian are mostly known for making (pretty good quality) sequels to other companies games? It is not realy known if they are even capable of originality. Their games are usually of a pretty decent quality, and their story telling isn't bad; at the same time their games often have an "unfinished" feel and often just improve on existing materials and mechanics without actually bringing something truly innovative to the table. I'm afraid that PE will probably be a decent game but pretty generic in it's content, which will probably be assembled from parts ripped off from other games.

I get the feeling Obsidian could probably something feel completed if, in fact, they got to call more shots. It's probably not their fault, even if it appears so. As you said, they've been given a lot of sequels, and I think they're racing the clock in those cases. Some of the developers that have resided or used to reside there have made awesome stuff though (Black Isle).

It's already successful, as PE was never intended to be a AAA wide release title. It's a game designed for a very small niche audience which has already pre-sold enough copies to be profitable and will likely sell even more at launch.
My understanding is there are no plans for retail distribution, only digital sales direct to consumers. Their advertising will likely consist of putting up some trailers on Steam, perhaps some low cost marketing and PR activities, etc., but they are not going to buy $10 million of TV spots.

We've been burnt before. We fanboys and fangirls need to learn our lessons from previous releases that let us down and prepare ourselves for the possibility that some game we're looking forward to isn't going to the RPG Second Coming.
