I was planning to download BGEE tomorrow from Beamdog and had visions of hours of playing through the new BGEE this weekend.
However... the Bioware BGI Forum I know of (http://social.biowar...ndex/9487004/19)
is strangely silent for something that I expected to be very well received. I'm bringing this to the front to 'refresh the discussion.
As today is the 29th, I'd think some of you 'no-reload folks' would have played thru 20 times by now.
On top of that,, and even more disturbing, is that what I do read pretty much indicates that I need to leave my Tutu game in tact and forget spending the $ for a while.
Anybody have any first hand insight that differs?

Seriously! The Black Pits is every DnD infinity Engine players wet dream. If there's ever a place to test character and party builds, that be the place aye!

Also, The Black Pits is -awesome-. I played through that once so far, but I enjoyed myself with it.

Graphics are great, that's apparent. Actually, however, the only negative I've seen was the intro movie which seemed more like 'still shots' whereas in the original was more like a movie.
Not sure about the Black Pits. Seems like it's disconnected from the story. I thought it would be interwoven. Still, I haven't delved too deeply.
For you Bad Guys out there, I noticed that they now feature an 'Anti-Paladin'. Very cool - although I'd never play one now, I did so years and years ago, mid 80's, in p&p D&D and he's easily my most memrorable character.
Hey Sapphire, have you even tried intorducing any mods or are you sticking w/the vanilla? I'd like a different character portrait. Here's the rub though, I'm not savvy enough to figure out WHERE it's installed. There's a desktop icon but I can't find the installation under 'program files' or 'program files (x86)'. I made a folder for the 'install app' in C: Program Files/Black Isle (where I have my Tutu, BGII and vanilla BG) but I don't THINK it put it there. I'd like to try and create a portrait folder and see if I can introduce one of my own portraits. Also, as you know, I prefer the 'Hard Times' mod over the basic game. Oh well, guess I should play it before I start messin' with it.

For portraits you should go to wherever your documents folder is at, and there should be a folder called Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition. Click on that and make a new folder called Portraits, and the new Portrait Sizes are:
Large: 210x330 (not really necessary, so don't worry if you don't have it)
Medium: 169x266
Small: 54x84
However, if you still need help, then take a look at this link, and the Opening Post!

I'm buying this, mostly at the hopeful prospect that they'll get working on BG2EE and expand VASTLY on ToB so it resemles what was originally planned.
I'd urge a little caution with your optimism there - I've read dev quotes along the lines of their contract being very limiting in terms of adding new content as opposed to tweaking what was already there; and I'm pretty certain restoring "cut" content from the original would be considered "new" for this purpose.
I think this was a shame - I was hoping BG:EE might do something like the "Unfinished Business" mod, but it seems it's not to be.

I note that just about every other time I sign on there are updates waiting to improve game performance and I appreciate the fact that the folks that put this together are actively trying to fix issues that others are finding.
Positives (so far) include:
1) The new personas of Rassad and Neera. I'm playing them in my party. I have not played the other new guy cuase he's evil - no can do.
2) Graphics and zoom are impressive.
3) The journal is vastly improved as are the Quests/Completed Quests logs.
Negatives include so far:
1) Limited, if no, banter. I use NPC interjections to guide my PC in his decisions, e.g. Imoen saying that she thought Montaron and Xzar were a bad idea. As a fighter, not being able to use 'Detect Evil' when I play a Paladin, I rely on interjections like that to guide my PC in his decision making.
2) Small stuff like the 'mysterious vial' and 'contaminated iron' don't play out so they're back to being a dead-end.
3) This is the 'full-up' version of the game and I prefer to play the 'Hard Times mod.' More a matter of choice there though.
I'm playing a 'minimal reload' and have worked through Larswood. I chose to keep Neera and Rasaad instead of adding Minsc and Dynahier so I''ve not headed off to the Gnoll Stronghold yet. I'll do that after I go on the lamb after I escape from Candlekeep.

The version that is available now does not work with Tutu - it's stands alone. The idea for Tutu (I think) was to run the original BG/TotSC on the same engine as BGII/TOB. But EE provides all the graphics etc that the Tutu game provides.
I have heard, and noted from others, that there are some other versions og the BGEE game coming out. One is a Weidu version, which doesn't mean much to me, except that I think Weidu allows modding, i.e. Tutu - or something like that. Not a techy - sorry.
The difference I am finding is that many of the 'extensions' to the vanilla game that Tutu and other mods provide will not play out w/this version of BGEE, i.e. Jahiera's Druidic quest in the Cloakwoods doesn't materialize, etc. I've gotten use to some of those side quests.

There's a quest for Rasaad too. Some other Monks attacked him/us in BG & we found a letter w/one of them. Don't know where that's goin' yet either.
Can't wait for BGII/SOA EE.

The Bioware boards have not been completely silent, but when a discussion was started, it was moved to the BG2 forum, which seems strange, but back then people started throwing around spoilers about BG2 because of speculation of a sequel. http://social.biowar.../index/9487004/
Though it is more fitting to talk about it in a BG1 spoiler forum I agree.
My experience thus far is there have been some nice improvements. I especially like the character-specific colored selection circles and the very well organized journal. It's a pity though many bugs from the original game where squashed, many new ones popped up because of overhauling the engine and adding new content. But the speed in which bugs get squashed in new patches is fenomenal: four patches in the three weeks since release (numbered 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011).
But like you I dearly miss Hard Times, as well as the NPC1 Project and Unfinished Business (because of Overhaul not being allowed to modify original content, there's silent NPC's and unfinished quests just like in vanilla BG). Biggest grief for me is the game is too easy. I'm hoping for Hard Times and Sword Coast Stratagems to get BGEE-compatability. I already did a nudge to MacReady (creator of HT), maybe I should do the same to DavidW.
It's a bit sad, even though it's an enhanced edition, it still needs tons of mods to make it the game I like (BG2 Tweaks, Rogue Rebalancing and aTweaks are must-haves for me as well, and still are for BGEE). I tried it out of curiosity, but will put playing on hold for half a year or so, till mods are updated. There are some mods already made compatible now (BG2 tweaks was the first), but without a compatible WeiDu, installing is a big hassle, just like making ShadowKeeper to work:

I'm afraid to say this opinion on the BGEE boards, as I don't want to add to all the negativity vented there the last few weeks (it was a calm and friendly board like this one (at least our BG-haven) - though much busier - until around release-date many people came trolling. The game was buggy at release, but the ****storm from trolls was really ugly to behold. Still, I stick to playing my Tutu campaigns for now.

Ofcourse, I learned to use hard-times from you & have never gone back, until now. Playing the game using HT maked finding those special items so much more exciting.
I continue to lament the lack of NPC discourse. I've come to depend on that discourse in guiding my game play as it often serves to nudge the PC toward or away from a course of action.
I note that BGII Tweaks might install. Guess I'll wait till I'm thru my current 'Minimal Reload' and see where we are then. I understand, I think, that there is a WEIDU version of BGEE coming out but I might be wrong there.
I've read elesewhere that they were not allowed to intoduce new content but I am enjoying two of the three new NPCs as part of my party. They come w/quests of their own so there are some new things.
Anyway, I'm tryin' to keep an eye out for things others might find of interest in deciding whether or not to splurge for the $20. To their credit, despite not fully play testing I guess, they have provided multiple updates to fix things they are finding that don't work.
Still I miss Hard Times.

The frequency of patches is impressive though, I will allow them this. Note, however, it's still a work in progress. It is maddening how often Imoen, with her bow selected, will wander right up to the enemy I have asked her to attack and try to fire arrows into him/her/it from point blank range, even after four updates. Note also that there are multiple demands on the time of the studio - the iPad version was finally green-lit after more than one rejection by the app store, and Apple has recently also rejected the iOS version - the tenor of Trent's tweet after that was that it is now all hands to that particular pump; it seems the whole project has been troubled.
Overall now I'd say it is playable and mostly enjoyable, and I am really enjoying the new NPCs. The experience of its delay and eventual release with a slew of bugs still leaves a sour taste for me sadly, and at the moment I still consider a modded version of the original to be the best experience, though there's time yet for that to change.

I do miss the NPC Project though. I am hoping that it will be made compatible, eventually. The first step to easy modding would be an updated Weidu. There's already a method for installing mods to try them out for compatibility, but I find it way too complicated.
I'm taking a break from BG altogether for a while, and playing some other kinds of games. But I still continue to follow the discussions about the game with great interest. I'll cycle back around to it eventually, because I always do. Hopefully, by then, BG2:EE will be out, and will have a bit smoother release.
I feel great sympathy for the Overhaul/Beamdog developers, and I will continue to support their efforts. If nothing else, their project has generated new attention to the game.
