i was offered the opertunity to trade DA:O for Borderlands at my gamestore.

so i was wondering if someone could tell me, not which game is better, but which i would like more.

I love DA:Os combat system, but the fluctuating difficulty does cause me some frusteration. i dont like how i cant really just make choices and keep playing, there are certain abilities and choices i feel like i HAVE to make in order to beat the game and, in general, have fun doing so. I feel that the system is way too focused on what abilities you have versus what your skills as a tactition may be.

i am also not a big fan of games like this being highly challenging because if i lose in a game like this its usually NOT because i, as a player, did somethng wrong at that moment but because either my characters dont have some certain skill, or they are under the encounters level bar, or they are built wierd or something like that but not because i actually had a misstep in the combat. it is very rare that i find encounters in DA:O that i think are just right, either they are really easy or frusteratingly difficult. Certain games i can stand to be highly difficult, like demons souls. when i die in demons souls i know it was my fault and i know what to do next time to make sure it doesnt happen again.

when i die in DA:O i feel like it was just a completely unfair fight where my oponents are far more powerfull than i am.

While i havnt played Borderlands i have heard some say that its boring? i generally dont have the same boredom issues that other people do. I come from a long line of MMOs so i can literally find fun in fighting giant crabs for hours while using the same abilities over and over again.

but i did find assassins creed boring, i got through it because i love being an assassin but the game itself was very repatitive and dull to me so im not immune to borring gameplay either.

please help lol, iv read the reviews but its not helping me very much.

lol..halo? i dont like halo, at all. im not a big fan of shooters.

like i said this game would be perfect i just dont like the fluctuating difficulty. which seems to be a really common complaint about this game in general. im just not a fan of games that are built around certain abilities. i feel i should be able to pick any ability i want in this game and still be a threat. if i dont want my mage to be a healer i shouldnt have to make them one. sadly i do not feel this is the case.

on normal i often feel like encounters are over my head. otherwise i love this game.

so i was wondering if borderlands is better?

Sorry, Steel, everyone's up in the Return to Ostagar thread. Didn't you hear? For only $5.00 you can buy a limited-edition gold-plated pitchfork. And they throw in a torch for FREE! It's like Wal-Mart on Black Friday, up there, I tells ya. I even see a disproportionate amount of spandex.

Unfortunately, I feel by the *ahem* quality of the writing in your post that my poor attempt at humor will be lost on you, so I shall translate.

Dude, u liek grinding? you want borderlands, yo. Cuz DA is like, about the story and characters, and you actually have to think to win the fights, kinda like an RTS, yeah. Not that I would willingly cost Bioware money, but you honestly sound more like a Borderlands kinda guy than a DA one. Don't get me wrong, I'm playing borderlands and enjoying it, they are just totally different types of games.

why not both?

how i type on forums does not reflect my intelligence level. nor does it mean im a retarded space monkey or whatever the hell that bottom part of your txt was directed towards.

ANYWAYS, i was simply stating that i dont get bored easily by most peoples standards. Im up for challanging games, but like i said, in my OPINION, i dont believe this game was aligned correctly with what players are given. iv beaten the game on nightmare too lol. i never said the game is impossable. but i dont like how it is based around certain party structures and abilities, its not really the freedom i was looking for you see. yes some battles require thinking but you are failing to see my complaint.

my complaint is that when i do die it is not because i, as the tactition, did something wrong. Usually its because i am just no match for my oposition at that time. which is frusterating to me.

So i took a look at borderlands and i noticed the main complaint was referring to it being borring but because i can often find joy in what others consider to be borring i thought id  ask the polite people of DA:O forums.

Don't be all sad or take it personal, I make fun of everyone. I'm kind of a misanthrope, to be honest.

My patience with these boards is low today. See the rampant idiocy running amok in the "return to ostagar delayed" thread. ugh.

Yes, I am an elitist pr**k, I enjoy reading well-written things. I judge people on the internet based on how well they write posts because it's the only thing I have to go on, capisci? Sue me.

Look, if you've already finished DA, just ask yourself if you are interested in the story enough to play through it again. If not, trade it in for another experience. If yes, then keep it. Borderlands IS a shooter, make no mistake about it. It has "RPG elements" which in this day and age means you can pick a few skills. Think of Diablo more than Baldur's Gate, if you will. With guns.

The game will have dlc for 2 years. If you liked the story, you will regret letting go of the original disc.

If you didn't care for the story, and since you didn't enjoy the combat, I say let it go and get anything else you like.

Borderlands is fun (lots of weapons to play with) but it gets repetitive fast. Doing both play throughs with each class gets a bit boring. The only time Borderlands becomes somewhat of a challenge and enjoyable is when you have 3 friends playing with you and everything in the game is level 50-55.

OP: You mentioned you don't like FPS games. Borderlands is FPS plus...

While many call it an RPG, there's very little RPG to it, IMHO. You get 4 archetypes and that's it. You get to customize how you gain skills, but that doesn't make an RPG. The game is about nonstop action and is fun. I don't find it engaging like DA:O and thus have vested maybe only 20 hours in the game in total.

Have you tried turning your DA:O settings to easy? For many this helps a lot. If combat is the only thing keeping you from liking this game, then try it on an easier setting. Others have reported that it isn't an "I-Win" button, but does help them.

Also: fiddle more with your combat tactics. They can help a lot especially if your playstyle isn't micromanagement. Hope this helps.

i personally like both, that's the kind of gamer i am...but since every gamer has his own opinion on a game its better to test out the waters first....i would recommend renting the game...and if you don't like it within the rental period no biggie your only out a couple dollars, big whoop...thats how i 'test' the waters so im not wasting $60 on a game that everyone in my game design class tells me 'i must have'

thank you all :). i really do appreciate the feedback. and skydiver888 no harm done lol,

i love the story of DA:O, and while turning it down to easy is defenately not an "i win" button it does give me a little more flexability that im looking for. i dont want to have to be an elitist to have fun with the game. Nor do i want to spend all afternoon on the same fight. Like i said usually if i lose i feel like i was significantly overwhelmed and its not fun for me to just be owned a thousand times.

its not the combat, i love the system itself. its the level of some of the enemy encounters, it just strikes me like "wtf is going on here!?" you know? lol i know you guys know what im talking about, its happened at least once to each of you.

basically if the game was linear and the battles were more level based this would be my favorite rpg of all time. Also if it wernt AS tailored for certain abilities. im also a big fan of giving the players what they need and letting them pick the extras. If a game is based around having a certain ability i dont want to find out 80+ hours in that im dying because i didnt pick it up. if its necessary why even put the player through the frusteration, the heal spell should come with the mage. or healing should be an archtype of its own.

for example. oblivion. the game knows you will need healing, and magic. thus, you start with a healing spell and fireball.

demons souls, you dont actually NEED any of the extra abilities or spells.

here its ALL about the abilities you have, if you have a crappy line-up of skills to use your SOL. or if you dont have a healer. or if you build your tank in a crappy fashion or dont outfit him in massive armor. just too many pitfalls that limit your playstyle.
