I dislike the current format of controls. We need more speed-buttons. Being a mage, it is a really slow and awkward process to utilise all of my spells. (I will use the PS3 scheme)
Pressing L2, then choosing "spells/abilities", then choosing the specific spells is a real pain!

Ditch the L1/R1 to choose character, map it to d-pad up and down. D-pad left/right changes target.
Give us 9 speed-buttons, by adding R1 to the mix. So now we would have:
Square, Triangle and Circle
R1 + Square, Triangle and Circle
and R2 + Square, Triangle and Circle.

That would take care of most of the problems.

But let's say we have even more spells we want to use...
The L1 button should function as an "favourites"-wheel. Where you can map 12 favourite skills/tactics/items to a single wheel. Mapping should function as it does with the speed-buttons. You can map potions, tactics, and everything to it.

Bioware, if you are reading this, please do something about the control-setup! It's a real pain!!!

What do you guys feel? Just like me? Tired of the ineffective controls?

I like the controls for the 360.

My gripe with combat on the 360 is entirely due to the fact that unlike DA:O if you click the A button on an enemy you no longer run the distance to hit them. This extends to using abilities like Shield Bash (easy to understand ability) you no longer run to the enemy to Bash. If you're not in range for the Bash you do nothing.

It hampers, not much, the micromanaging aspect of the game since it's a little more aggravating to tell Aveline to Bash and Fenris to use Whirlwind whilst going back to managing your Spirit Healer Hawke. You spend more time babysitting Aveline by having her walk manually to the enemy then Bashing and then pausing and going back to another character.

Small gripe.

But it's something I'd like seeing return for DA3.

That must most certainly be fixed.
It's something I have not noticed in DA2, as I have only finished it once with a mage.

If you play an offensive mage with a huge pool of mana (or blood), you will quickly understand how annoying it is having to go through the damned L2 wheels time and time again...

As a PS3 user, I have to say this hypothetical set-up sounds like a good one.

Works fine on the xbox. Not sure if a change is needed at all. The OP makes some good suggestions though.

Thank you. Do you suffer from the tedious controls too?

It can't be much different on the xbox. You will face the same problems on that, unless they have more speed-buttons, which is unlikely.

Controls could improve, the added slot you outline are good. In the end, more important is that they need to give me a reason to USE the other slots you free up. Most of the time I can run the same tiny handful of spells and "solve" almost any problem.

Most spells have too long cooldown time to only be used, like you say.
My setup is usually as a high mana (blood) mage focused on offense.

Through both DA:O and DA2, I've had the same problem.  Actually a minor problem, that gets major in the long run.

I think this sounds great. Not huge on the whole "favourites" wheel, but having L1 and R1 unlocking even more tabs sounds great!  That would allow 12 hot keys on a controller, which isn't shabby at all.

Like you said, it can't be very different on xbox, cause it isn't. The controls are the exact same =)

I just thought about the later levels. Let's say you max out your mage and have 20 spells you want to (easily) utilise, the wheel would be perfect. You get 12 (not so) frequently used spells in there, easily accessible.

Or a warrior or rogue can use the wheel to quickly access potions, poisons and weapons. Being able to switch equipment with a single button would be great. Meet a Rage Demon, switch on ice weapons and fire resistance-accessories. B)

Yeah I see the benefit. It still takes me into a radial menu though, so I think three more hot bar buttons is worth it. I don't remember using more than 12 powers even somewhat actively on any character, ever.

Well I was never satisfied with just six ability shortcuts. If room can be made for more, that would fix one of my major gripes with the combat.

Hopefully Bioware will catch this and fix the issue.
Plaintiff, It's one of my major gripes with the combat as well.

I don't own a console. I see the OP detail how Bioware should layout the controls, why is that so? Is it unheard of in consoles for the game to give a default controller setting, but in the options let you map anything you want to anything you want?

I guess I am saying, why does a request have to detail every UI choices down the the button. Are developers unable to give players total control of how they map their controllers. If no games allow console players do that.........why not?

Not nitpicking posts, I am tired of ungrading my PC, since my laptop and tablet do everything I want except run good games. I'm getting a console after the Xmas sales rush...maybe.

I played DA2 on the 360, it was fairly painful compared to the PC version. If I had to make two suggestions they would be one-yes more key-mapping for abilities, two-a quick save button.

I will second the easier quick save request. I do watch my friend play games a lot on Xbox. It is painful to see how much time and button pushes it takes to save the game. That is almost a deal breaker for me. I used to ask him why he didn't save more often on games, then I understood, it slows down things a lot.

You can't do ANYTHING with the controls on the console. I know, it's two lines of code, but they don't let you on majority of games today! :(

Hopefully, they will add a control option this time...
