I made it through the big central room on the first floor of the Temple of Ishual, but am having trouble with the two connected rooms you go into next.  My first thought was to try having Dog & Alistair block the door while my rogue fires arrows and my circle mage fired spells but regardless of which of the two doors I open, the guys pour out of the other room and come down the corridor and clobber the two characters who aren't good melee fighters.  I tried running into the room, too, but I still find that I can't keep the non-melee fighters--particularly the circle mage--alive.  I'm just getting swarmed.

Maybe part of the problem is the tactical settings--I'm going to post questions about them elsewhere.  I am really finding combat in this game a struggle--it's just way too fast..  With seemingly five attacks per second by the time I notice somebody's health coming down, it's too late to hit the pause key and get them to drink a potion and it didn't seem like the <25% hit points - use health was activating.

You will find that MANY encounters in this game are the same--i am playing through as a Mage now, but I really did not have too many problems with the tower, since I use a lot of aoe-type attacks. You may want to switch to your mage and see if you have any abilities like that...it definitely may help.

I usually rush the room to the right with the Glenlocks, and keep the Hurlocks blocked in the doorway.

At the start, you're going to want to pause a LOT. Think of it as a turn-based game and pause every time your characters do something, then queue up their next action.

The very beginning is somewhat difficult because your tank is really bad (no massive armor and probably no Taunt). Use a lot of LOS pulling to get archers to come around corners at you. Don't be stingy with health poultices, you can always get more later on.

I could go down to easy difficulty, I suppose, but I'd rather try sticking it out for a bit longer since it hasn't been too bad to this point. I have used some approach and retreat tactics to draw off enemies in smaller numbers on the tougher fights, but that doesn't seem to be possible here.

One other question--is there some way to bash open chests or do you have to unlock them? I didn't take deft hands early on so there were all these locked chests that I left behind and I wonder if I was supposed to have better equipment.

There is a mod that allows you to bash open chests. http://www.dragonagenexus.com/ has that and many others. In the base game, however, you have to use a rogue to pick locks.

There is also a mod that gives mages a skill line that picks locks. None of the early chests there contain anything valuable or cool (although since money is tight early on it's nice to get them if you can). And throughout the game all the really great stuff is gained in other ways - quest rewards, unlocked chests, dlc, and so on. What's in locked chests is largely saleable stuff to get money.

I use a mod (only available on pc) that prevents companions being auto-leveled. They come to me at whatever level, with all their attribute, skill, spell/talent points undistributed. So I can put them where I like. This makes things like the tower much easier. You can set your mage and warrior (and Alistair) up to be useful, within the limits of what's available at that level.

I don't use mods on the first run through in games- somehow makes it seem like I'm cheating if I do. But yeah... I was wondering about whether chests and locked items had needed arms/armor in them or if it was just salable items. I didn't create a rogue type character, going more for a dwarvish warrior type.
Staying more on topic, the tower battles are going to be tough considering the area has been over run with  blight creatures. Use doorways to limit how many can attack you at once, and use poultices liberally. What worked for me was focus on where the archers are and attack them directly with your main character. This does 2 things; stops them firing on the party and allows your group to break up the attack into 2 groups rather than one group and  you  take ranged damage.

Leave your party behind at the door way that leads into the corridor with the two doors. Have one guy enter corridor and open any of the two doors. All the baddies will then rush you; make your one guy run back to the single door way where your tanks and mage are waiting. The baddies will bottle neck at the single door way which leads into the corridor with two doors.

There are a couple of side quests (notably Correspondus Interruptus) that require lockpicking to complete, and a few locked chests have good items, but for the most part they contain vendor trash.

Thanks magist, I should have thought of trying that I guess.

you can use a bow to pull 1 or 2 mobs at a time throughout the whole game by having your party stay back by pressing "H" to hold position

just make sure you are at the maximum range of vision to see the mob you are trying to pull, so that you only see that guy and none others.

Used Magist's tactic and got through...didn't have too much more trouble with the rest of the tower, except for that damned ogre. Impatience got the better of me and I lowered the difficulty for that encounter.

Now that I have deft hands, I'm finding that the stuff in the chests isn't all that anyway...the stuff people luck up is apparently no better than what they leave lying around.

yeah, even if you end up in a situation where you have been amushed and surrounded.. you should pause and look for an empty room/bottle neck to move your team to.
